Ezo Ukandu (June 15, 1936 - January 8, 2024) was a Nigerian traditional ruler who held the title of Enyi-na-Obiangwu of the Imenyi Ancient Kingdom for 48 years. [1] [2] He served as Chairman of the Abia State Council of Traditional Rulers and was the first Chairman of the Southeast Council of Traditional Rulers. [1]

Background

Early life and education

Eze Ukandu was born in Ahaba Imenyi, Isuikwuato, Abia State, Nigeria, to Ezo and Nwanyibuikwu Ukandu. He was the eldest of seven children. Ukandu completed his primary education in Ahaba Imenyi and later obtained a certificate in general education, followed by a diploma in business management and public administration.

Institutional involvement

Ukandu operated several businesses in Aba, Abia State, including enterprises in hospitality and merchandise importation. [3] He established a Deta Batteries manufacturing facility with distribution networks in Nigeria and other parts of West Africa. [3] Through his company Ukandu Motors, he held franchises for the distribution and servicing of Peugeot, Mercedes Benz, and other vehicle brands. He participated in the founding of Abia State University, Uturu [5] and later served as a director of the university's micro finance bank. [6] [4] He also contributed to the development of Sam Mbakwe Airport (formerly Owerri Airport), providing financial support during its construction. [5]

Political involvement

In July 2019, Ukandu advocated for the next governor of Abia State to come from the Isuikwuato district, citing perceived marginalization. [7] In November 2019, he was appointed to a four-member committee tasked with developing selection procedures for new leadership of the Abia State Council of Traditional Rulers, following its dissolution by Governor Okezie Ikpeazu. [8]

Ukandu was appointed by Olusegun Obasanjo as a National Royal Ambassador representing the Southeast in the National Peace Forum. [2] He also held the position of Chairman Board of Trustees of South-East Council of Traditional Rulers until his passing. [9]

Scholarships

In the 1990s, Ukandu founded the Ukandu Scholarship Scheme which provides provides funding for domestic and international education. [4] The program offers financial support to students for studies both within Nigeria and abroad. [10] Selection criteria include academic performance and community service engagement.

Ukandu is set to be depicted in The Chronicles of Enyimba, an upcoming series about the history of Aba, a commercial center in Abia State, Nigeria. [12] The Chronicles of Enyimba, in pre-production as of 2024, is structured as a two-season series with 40 episodes, focusing on the commercial development of Aba in the post-Nigerian Civil War period. [12] The series plans to include depictions of Ukandu and other business figures from the era. [12]

Death

Ukandu died on January 8, 2024, at the age of 87. [1] His funeral is scheduled for November 14-17, 2024, in Ahaba Imenyi Ancient Kingdom, Isuikwuato Local Government Area, Abia State, Nigeria. [1] The program includes a procession to Isuikwuato Local Government Headquarters and lying in state at Imenyi Royal Palace on November 14 and the funeral service and interment on November 15. The funeral proceedings will conclude with an outing service on November 17. [11]

Aba is a city in southeastern Nigeria and the commercial centre of Abia State. Upon the creation of Abia State in 1991, the old Aba township was divided into two local government areas, being Aba South and Aba North, while the suburban neighborhood of what was then known as Obioma Ngwa L.G.A. was divided into three L.G.A.s for administrative convenience. Aba South is the main city centre of Aba and Abia State at large, being located on the Aba River. Alayi Igboji-Akuru Community is a suburban town in the Bende local government area of Abia State, Nigeria. The Community consisted of four main clans of Akoliufu, Amankalu, Ugwueke and Ezeukwu. Alayi is one of the communities that make up Umunnato all in Bende LGC. Isuikwuato is a local government area in Abia State in southeastern Nigeria. The name Isu-Ikwu-Ato translates from Igbo as 'three Isu families or lineage' and refers to the three lineages descended from the Isu people, in what is now a local government area. The three brothers are Imenyi who is the eldest, Oguduasaa, his younger brother from the same mother and Isuamawo the second oldest and first from the second wife. These three major clans which also harbour various communities in each of them make up the present day Isuikwuato. It has an estimated population of over 50,000 people. Isuikwuato has natural resources such as iron ore and kaolin. Oil lines flow through Isuikwuato and there have been cases of burst pipe which have had severe effects on the local economy and environment. The major cash crops are palm oil and cassava. The soil at Isuikwuato is loose and suffers from Erosion and this left some dangerous erosion sites in the area. They lack the needed government backing to build drainages around the area to guide the flow of water without further harming the already crying soil. Blessed with hills and highlands, the town will appreciate water infrastructures because water is an important but hard resource to get in Isuikwuato. Isuikwuato is also home to Abia State University Uturu.

Eluoma is a town in Amawu, Isuikwuato, Abia State of Nigeria. It is the largest town in Isuikwuato, having more than 10 distinct villages. It also occupies the largest geographical space in the whole of Isuikwuato, and has the most varied vegetation, relief and drainage. It shares boundaries with Amiyi Uhu, Amiyi Obilohia, Otampa, Umuasua, Umuobiala, Nnunya and Umuahia. It is a few kilometres from Abia State University, Uturu, Abia State and about 20 kilometres from Umuahia, the capital of Abia State, in the South Eastern part of Nigeria. Ikwuano is a Local Government Area of Abia State, Nigeria. Its headquarters is in Isiala Oboro. The name 'Ikwuano' etymologically indicates that there are four different ancient kingdoms that make up the community called Ikwuano. These include Oboro, Ibere, Ariam/Usaka and Oloko.

The Isu people are the largest group of the Igbo people of Nigeria. Isuama, in which the purest Igbo is said to be spoken, is to be found the heart of the Igbo nationality; consequently it is quite reasonable to look among its people for the original fountain-head from which all the other clans have sprung. This inference too is supported not only by the purity of the language, but by this right of dispensing or rather of confer-ring royalty which is undoubtedly the prerogative of the Nri or N'shi people. In the pre-colonial era, the Igbo people were protected from external invasion by the dense forests of the region, which also had the effect of encouraging diversity. Thus as warriors the neighboring Oratta (Uratta) people looked down on the Isu people, who were traders.

Ernest Maduabuchi Ojukwu, is a past Deputy Director-General and Head of Campus of the Nigerian Law School, Augustine Nnamani Campus, Agbani Enugu. Okezie Victor Ikpeazu is a Nigerian politician and former Governor of Abia State, who was in office from 29 May 2015 to 29 May 2023. He was elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party. He was re-elected as the Governor of Abia state at the 9 March 2019 gubernatorial election. He ran for election at the 2023 Senatorial election for Abia South Senatorial District but came a distant third behind incumbent Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe of All Progressive Grand Alliance and a political newbie Chinedu Onyeizu of the Labour Party.

Oloko is one of the four clans that make up Ikwuano Local Government Area of Abia State, Nigeria. Oloko is from the Isuogu group. It borders Oboro to the north, Olokoro and Ngwa to the west, Ariam/Usaka to the east and Ikono; a clan in Akwa Ibom State to its south. Oloko is one of 18 Igbo clans of the Old Bende Division. It was classified in the Ohuhu-Ngwa cluster of the Southern Igbo area.

He served as Chairman of Abia State Traditional Rulers Council from 2013 to 2019 and Chairman South-East Council of Traditional Rulers from 2015 to 2020. Itunta is a village in Ibere, Ikwuano Local Government Area, Abia State, Nigeria. Itunta falls under the Umuakoo Autonomous Community. The Eze of Umuakoo is HRM Eze Monday Unadindu Okoro in whom is conferred with the title of Akoo II of Umuakoo. Itunta is renowned for her vast cocoa production.
