Abia State University Uturu (ABSU) is a Nigerian public university. It is one of the state-owned universities in Nigeria. These state academic institutions were created to expand admissions and bring professional skills, expertise and modern research facilities close to the city and rural dwellers, and have helped talented students to obtain higher education. [4] [5]
The inception of the university was in 1981 in the former Imo State under the name of Imo State University, Etiti. [6] [7] The university was established by Sam Mbakwe when he was governor of old Imo State. The main campus was located at Etiti, Imo State, while the Law Department was located in a separate Campus at Aba. Between 1984 and 1985 under the military governorship of General Ike Nwachukwu, the university moved to its permanent site at Uturu Okigwe. [8]
Following the creation of Abia State in 1991, the Uturu campus of the university was ceded to Abia State, and is now known as Abia State University Uturu, Isuikwuato Local Government Area, Abia State, Nigeria. [9] The university is organized in colleges and schools having been founded on the same collegiate system that University of Nebraska operates. [10]
Studies at Abia State University include: undergraduate, graduate and doctorate degrees. It has two campuses- its main campus in Uturu; and the College of Law, College of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine housed by the campus in Umuahia, capital of Abia State, Nigeria. [11] [12]
Abia State University offers more than 90 undergraduate and graduate programs across ten colleges. [13]

Abia State University Library was established on 8 February alongside the university, in 1981 but started its operation and services on 1 October 1981. [16] The E-library was launched by the National Universities Commission (NUC) on 3 July 2007 with the aim of enhancing teaching and research programmes of the student, lecturers and primarily serve the university community. Abia State is a state in the South-East geopolitical zone of Nigeria. Owerri is the capital city of Imo State in Nigeria, set in the heart of Igboland. It is also the state's largest city, followed by Orlu, Okigwe and Ohaji/Egbema. Owerri consists of three Local Government Areas including Owerri Municipal, Owerri North and Owerri West, it has an estimated population of 1,401,873 as of 2016 and is approximately 100 square kilometres (40 sq mi) in area. Owerri is bordered by the Otamiri River to the east and the Nworie River to the south. The Owerri Slogan is Heartland. It is also called the Las Vegas of Africa, due to the night life of the city and the numerous hotels, casino and leisure parks all over the city.

It began formal activities in May 1993 with the appointment of the first Council and Vice-Chancellor Professor Placid C. Njoku on 27 May 1993, while other key officials of the University were appointed later.

He is also the President of the Network of University Legal Aid Institutions, the platform through which he has continued to achieve his dreams of promoting clinical legal education and reform of legal education in Nigeria.
Rhema University, Aba (RU) is an accredited private, Christian university based in the city of Aba in Abia State, Nigeria. Founded by the Living Word Ministries International and licensed by the National Universities Commission in 2009 is one of the few private universities in Abia State. The university is currently operating from its take-off campus located at 153/155 Aba-Owerri Road, Aba in Abia State, with plans to develop and migrate its students and faculty to the permanent campus.
The Alvan Ikoku Federal University of Education, Owerri, formerly the Alvan Ikoku Federal College of Education, Owerri is located in Owerri, the capital of Imo State, Nigeria. It was established in April 1963 as the Advanced Teachers Training College by the defunct Eastern Nigeria Government on the grounds of the Old Shell Camp, Owerri. It has since expanded across the Orlu Road on the banks of the Nworie River. It awards the National Certificate in Education (NCE) and the Professional Diploma in Education (PDE) and, in affiliation, with the University of Nigeria, Nsukka the Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) since 1984. The university is headed by Dr. (Mrs.) Stella Ngozi Lemchi, the Acting Vice-Chancellor (Administration) who was the erstwhile Provost of the college. She took over, in 2022, from Dr. Dan C. Anyanwu. Dr (Mrs.) Lemchi is the second female Provost of the college, after Professor Blessing C. Ijioma.

Dick W. Emuchay, also referred to as "Sir D. W. Emuchay", was a British-Nigerian medical doctor and administrator. He served as the first chairman of the Public Service Commission of the East Central State. In 1981, Samuel Onunaka Mbakwe, Governor of Imo State, appointed Emuchay as the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman Governing Council of the newly created Imo State University, later Abia State University He served in that position until 1985. He is reputed to have set up the first privately run rural hospital, when in 1961 he set up a 180-bed cottage hospital in his home town of Azumini, in Ukwa East, Abia State.
Nkechi Caroline Ikpeazu was the First Lady of Abia State from 29 May 2015 to 29 May 2023, as wife of the former Governor of Abia State located in the southeast of Nigeria. She is also the Founder and President of Vicar Hope Foundation, a non-profit organisation that has Special Consultative Status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council(ECOSOC)
Uchenna Ikonne was a Nigerian professor of optometry. In December 2015, he became the 7th Substantive Vice-Chancellor of Abia State University. having previously served as the Rector, Abia State Polytechnic, Aba – 2014–2015.
Onyemachi Maxwell Ogbulu commonly known as O. M. Ogbulu is a Nigerian academic. He is the 8th and current Vice-Chancellor of Abia State University Uturu since December, 2021.
Ogwo Ekeoma Ogwo commonly known as Ogwo E. Ogwo is a Nigerian Professor of marketing in the Abia State University Uturu. He was the Vice-Chancellor of Abia State University Uturu from September 2000 to September 2005. He is from Igbere in Bende local government area in Abia.
