Rivers State University (RIVSU or RSU), formerly known as Rivers State University of Science and Technology (UST or RSUST), is a government-owned university located in Diobu (Mile III) area of Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Southern Nigeria. [3]

As of 2021, the vice chancellor of the university is Professor Nlerum Sunday Okogbule. [4] He was appointed by the Governor Nyesom Wike administration.

History

The Rivers State University of Science and Technology was established in 1972 as the College of Science and Technology. [5] It was granted independent university status in 1980 and was renamed from College of Science and Technology to Rivers State University of Science and Technology. [6] In March 2017, the university was renamed to Rivers State University. [7] It is the only university in Nigeria that is accredited to offer degree programs in Marine Engineering. [8]

He is a member of the People's Democratic Party (PDP) and was educated at Rivers State University of Science and Technology.

Tasie Cyprian Wike was a Nigerian lawyer who, as of 2014, was Chairman of the Rivers State College of Health Science and Technology (RSCHST). His appointment to the office was made by Governor Chibuike Amaechi whose tenure expired on 29 May 2015.

University of Cross River State also known as UNICROSS is a state-owned tertiary institution with four campuses spread across four Local Government Areas of the state. The University was formerly known as the Cross River University of Technology (CRUTECH). It was renamed in February of 2021 by a bill passed at Cross River State House of Assembly which was then approved by the former Governor of the State, Benedict Ayade. The change of the tertiary institution's name was to enable the varsity function as a conventional University, which provides the opportunity to offer more professional courses rather focusing on tech-related courses. The present Vice Chancellor of the institution is Prof Augustine Angba.

The Rivers State gubernatorial election took place on 9 March 2019, concurrently with various other Nigerian state level elections. A rerun of the vote was held in Abua–Odual, Ahoada West, Gokana and Opobo–Nkoro on 13 April. One-term incumbent Governor Ezenwo Nyesom Wike of the People's Democratic Party was eligible to run for re-election. He won in 2015 with 87.77% of the vote.

Tamunobaabo Wenike Danagogo is a Nigerian politician, lawyer, and the current Secretary to the State Government of Rivers State since May 2019. Before that, he was the Minister of Sports in the Federal Republic of Nigeria. He is a graduate of the Rivers State University of Science and Technology and the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">2023 Rivers State gubernatorial election</span> 2023 gubernatorial election in Rivers State, Nigeria

The 2023 Rivers State gubernatorial election will take place on 18 March 2023, to elect the Governor of Rivers State, concurrent with elections to the Rivers State House of Assembly as well as twenty-seven other gubernatorial elections and elections to all other state houses of assembly. The election—which was postponed from its original 11 March date—will be held three weeks after the presidential election and National Assembly elections. Incumbent PDP Governor Ezenwo Nyesom Wike is term-limited and cannot seek re-election to a third term.

Pastor Ezekiel Warigbani Zebulun, also known as Ezekiel Warigbani is Nigerian politician and youth advocate. He was the Governorship candidate of the Advanced Peoples Democratic Alliance (APDA) in the 2019 Rivers State gubernatorial election. Aftermath of the election, he led the Coalition of all Governorship Candidates and Party Chairmen in Rivers State to Independent National Electoral Commission office in Port Harcourt on protest against the winner of the election Ezenwo Nyesom Wike. Presently, he is in a strong alliance with the Nigerian transportation minister, Rt.Hon.Rotimi Amaechi for a riverine governor of Rivers State in the forth coming 2023 Rivers State gubernatorial election.

Port Harcourt Water Corporation formerly part of the Rivers State Water Board is the principal supplier of water and wastewater management throughout Rivers State. It is owned by the Rivers State Government.

Rumuokwuta is a town in Obio-Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State, Nigeria.

Okechukwu Onuchukwu is a Nigerian professor of Economics and the acting vice chancellor of Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, Rivers State.
