Maputo University

The Maputo University (Portuguese : Universidade Maputo) is one of Mozambique's principal universities. The name of the university is abbreviated to UniMaputo or UM. As a university, it was the first and the only public fully dedicated to teacher education in the country. According to the institution's founding decree, its name is Maputo University, but it is commonly referred to as Maputo Pedagogical University.

History

The Maputo University (UniMaputo) was founded in 1985 as a Higher Pedagogical Institute (ISP), by Ministerial Diploma No. 73/85, of December 4, as an institution dedicated to the training of teachers for all levels of the National Education System and education staff. At its inception, the institution operated at the facilities of the General Joaquim José Machado Preparatory School in Maputo.^[2]

In 1989, the Beira campus came into operation, occupying the premises of the then Patrice Lumumba Commercial School. The ISP then becomes the first top institution to have a campus outside the nation's capital.^[2]

Still in 1995, ten years after the institution's opening, the ISP becomes a university under the name Pedagogical University (UP), with the approval of the statutes, supported by Presidential Decree 13/95, of April 25.^[2]

In 2019, after a profound administrative reform, the university was reduced to Maputo city, and its delegations outside the national capital became Save University (former Sagrada Familia Pedagogical University), Púnguè University, Licungo University and the Rovuma University. The same reform changed the historical name of UP, renamed Maputo University (UniMaputo).^[1]

Student enrollment

In 2007, UniMaputo had 31,695 contact students and 506 distance students. Most of these, 31,157, are full-time with a reported 538 part-time students. The questionnaire response also noted that three students were from SADC countries and four from other countries (excluding the SADC region).^[3]

The University of São Tomé and Príncipe, USTP, is a public institution of higher education in São Tomé and Príncipe. It is the main institution dedicated to teaching, research and university extension of the country. It was established in 2014 by merging three older institutions of higher education: ISP, EFOPE and ICS.

The University of Cape Verde is the only public university of Cape Verde. The main campus is in Palmarejo, Praia, but there are also institutes in Mindelo, Assomada and São Jorge dos Órgãos. It has over 5000 students. A new campus for Uni-CV is under construction in Palmarejo, financed by the Chinese government. It should be completed by July 2020. It will have capacity for 4,890 students and 476 professors, with a library, dorms, cafeterias and sports facilities. It will have 61 class rooms, five auditoriums with a capacity of 150 seats, eight computer rooms, eight reading rooms and 34 laboratories.

Primary school education in Cape Verde is mandatory between the ages of 6–14 and free for children ages 6–12. In 1997, the gross primary enrollment rate was 148.8%. Primary school attendance rates were unavailable for Cape Verde as of 2001. While enrollment rates indicate a level of commitment to education, they do not always reflect children's participation in school. Textbooks have been made available to 90% of school children, and 90% of teachers have attended in-service teacher training. Its literacy rate as of 2010 ranges from 75 to 80%, the highest in West Africa south of the Sahara.

The University for International Integration of the Afro-Brazilian Lusophony is a public federal university located in Redenção, Ceará, Brazil. The city was chosen because it was the first Brazilian city to abolish slavery. The major courses offered are preferentially the ones included in the mutual interest of all countries in the Community of Portuguese Language Countries. They are: Brazil, Angola, Cape Verde, Guinea Bissau, Sao Tome and Principe, Mozambique, Portugal and East Timor. Looking for international integration, 50% of the seats in the university are for international students from those countries.

Mandume ya Ndemufayo University is a public university in Lubango, Angola, established in 1963 named after the late Kwanyama King Mandume ya Ndemufayo. The university emerged from the dismemberment of the Lubango campus of the Agostinho Neto University in the midst of the reforms in Angolan higher education that occurred in the years 2008 and 2009.

Lúrio University, also known as UniLúrio, is a public university in Nampula Province, Mozambique. Established by decree on 26 December 2006, the university has since grown to comprise seven faculties. Lúrio offers degree programs in 21 disciplines, enrolling 1,430 total students, including both undergraduate and postgraduate students. Besides its main campus in Nampula, the university operates campuses in Pemba, Cabo Delgado Province, and Niassa Province. The university is named for the Lúrio River in northeastern Mozambique.

Universidade Estadual do Maranhão is a public state university in the state of Maranhão, Brazil. It was founded on March 25, 1987, and is based in São Luís. In addition to the Universidade Federal do Maranhão (UFMA), it was the second university in the state. In September 2016, part of it was dismembered for creation of a third, the newly founded Universidade Estadual da Região Tocantina do Maranhão (UEMASUL). With more than 20 thousand students, the institution has 22 campuses and 25 university centers. In the university ranking, it ranks 157th in Brazil. The university rector is Gustavo Pereira da Costa.

The José Eduardo dos Santos University is an Angolan public university based in the city of Huambo.
