The University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) a public university located at Ho in the Volta Region of Ghana. UHAS is one of the youngest public universities in Ghana. Its operation started in September 2012, when the first batch of 154 students were admitted. [2]

History

The university was established by an Act of Parliament(Act 828), [3] which received presidential approval in December 2011. It, however, started admitting students in 2012. The university is devoted to teaching, research and service in the Health Sciences. [4] [5]

The university was formed with an Interim University Council that governs the affairs of the school chaired by Prof. Kofi Anyidoho, MA(Bloomington), PhD(Austin). The Foundation Vice-Chancellor was Professor Fred Newton Binka, MBChB (Legon), MPH (Jerusalem), PhD (Basel) who served from March 2012 to July 2016. In August, 2017, a new council was inaugurated with Justice Jones Victor Mawulorm Dotse as the chairman. Other members of the council comprise Professor John Owusu Gyapong (Vice-Chancellor, UHAS) ; Professor Victor Gadzekpo (Member),Dr. Sylvia Ayeley Deganus (Member), Dr. Nana Owusu-Afari (Member),Mr. Richard K. Adjei (Member), Dr. Mark Amexo (Member), Dr. Emmanuel Newman( NCTE), Mr. Courage Meteku ( Representative of CHASS), Professor Harry Kwami Tagbor (Representative of Convocation-professorial), Ms. Yaa Amankwaa Opuni (Representative of Convocation-professorial), Mr. Kwesi Aseredum Hagan (Representative of FUSSAG), Mr. Joshua Gadasu, (Representative of TEWU), Dr. Francis Zotor (Representative of UTAG), Mr. Derrick Asare (Representative of SRC). Office of the Vice-Chancellor

Professor Lydia Aziato is the current Vice-Chancellor of the University of Health and Allied Sciences. [7] In a special meeting held on June 3, 2022, the Governing Council of the University of Health and Allied Sciences approved the appointment of Prof. Aziato as the new Vice-Chancellor. [8] Effective August 1, 2022, Prof. Aziato assumes the prestigious position, [9] becoming the first woman and a nurse to hold the role of Vice-Chancellor in the history of the University. [10]

Research Ethics Committee

The university has a Research Ethics Committee REC that is charged with oversight responsibilities of reviewing and approving all research planned to be conducted in the university's facilities and/or involve the staff or students of the university. The goal of the REC is to protect the rights and welfare of human participants in research studies. [21]

The REC is made of seven (7) Scientists/Academics and 8 Non-scientists; including A lawyer, Journalist, Religious Body Representing the larger Community, Sociologist, Educationist, Traditional leader, Public Health Expert and a Medical Doctor [21]

The officers of the REC include the chair, Vice Chair and the Administrator. [21]

The University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) was ranked second in Ghana and 36th in Africa in the World Scientist and University Rankings 2021 by AD Scientific Index, beating out KNUST, UCC, and GIMPA, among other universities. [30]

UHAS achieved the highest ranking among Ghanaian universities in the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings for the SDG-3 category, recognizing their outstanding efforts in promoting good health and well-being in the 2022. [31]

Presbyterian Boys' Secondary School (PRESEC) is a secondary boarding school for boys, in Legon, Accra, Ghana. It was founded in 1938, under the auspices of the Presbyterian Church of the Gold Coast. The Basel missionary-theologian, Nicholas Timothy Clerk (1862–1961), who served as the first Synod Clerk of the Presbyterian Church of the Gold Coast from 1918 to 1932, used his tenure to advocate for the establishment of the secondary school. The school has ties with its sister schools, Aburi Girls' Senior High School and Krobo Girls Senior High School.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">University for Development Studies</span> Public University in Ghana

The University for Development Studies, Tamale was established in 1992 by the government of Ghana with a view to accelerating the development of the then 3 Northern Regions of Ghana. The late President Jerry John Rawlings played a crucial role in its founding as he used his prize money from World Food Prize of $50,000 as seed money for its founding. It was set up as a multi-campus institution. It is the fifth public university to be established in Ghana. This deviates from the usual practice of having universities with central campuses and administrations. It was created with the three northern regions of North Ghana in mind. These are the Northern Region, Upper East Region and the Upper West Region. It has four campuses in all, eight Faculties, a Business School, one Medical School, one Graduate School, one Institute and three centres.

The University of Mines and Technology (UMaT) is a public university located at Tarkwa in the Western Region of Ghana.

The Pentecost University is a private university located at Sowutuom in the Greater Accra Region of Ghana. It was founded by The Church of Pentecost (COP) and evolved from The Pentecost Bible College which initially trained only Lay Leaders and full-time Ministers for the COP. On May 22, 2003, J. A. Kufuor, the former President of Ghana, inaugurated PUC at the Sowutuom campus. The first PUC Council was inducted on May 6, 2004. Pentvars was accredited by the National Accreditation Board (NAB), Ghana in November 2004 and awarded its Presidential Charter on May 28, 2020, by Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, the President of the Republic of Ghana. Prior to receiving a Presidential Charter, the university was affiliated to the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, University of Cape Coast, and University of Ghana. On June 1, 2020, the university announced the appointment of Rev. Prof. Kwabena Agyapong-Kodua, who replaces Apostle Daniel Okyere Walker, as the first Vice-Chancellor since the university became fully-fledged.

The College of Health Sciences of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology comprises the Faculties of Allied Health Sciences, Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, School of Medical Sciences, School of Dentistry, School of Veterinary Medicine and the Kumasi Centre for Collaborative Research in tropical medicine (KCCR). It attained the status of a college by a change in the University Statutes that came into being in January 2005. Prior to this time, the components of the college existed separately as the Faculty of Pharmacy and School of Medical Sciences.

The University of Port Harcourt is located in Choba in Port Harcourt, Rivers state, Nigeria. It was established in 1975 as University College, Port Harcourt and was given university status in 1977. Kwasi Kwarfo Adarkwa, Ph.D is a Ghanaian academic and the a past Vice Chancellor of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST). In 2008, he was selected by then President of Ghana, John Kufuor, for a national award in the field of academics.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">University of Professional Studies</span> Ghanaian university

The University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) formerly known as Institute of Professional Studies (IPS), is a public university in Ghana. The main campus is located in Accra. UPSA is the first university in Ghana to provide both academic and business professional education. The University of Professional Studies Act, 2012 (Act 850) changed the name of the Institute of Professional Studies to University of Professional Studies, Accra. UPSA is nationally and internationally accredited by the National Accreditation Board (Ghana) and the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP) respectively.

The University of Ghana Medical School also UGMS is the medical school of Ghana's first public research institution, the University of Ghana. It is currently located at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra. The medical school was first planned in 1919, but took its first students in 1962.

Ebenezer Oduro Owusu is a Ghanaian entomologist and university administrator who served as the Vice Chancellor of the University of Ghana from 1 August, 2016 to 31 July, 2021. In this role, he was the principal academic and administrative officer of the university. Ebenezer Oduro Owusu is a professor of entomology at the Department of Animal Biology and Conservation Science and prior to his appointment as vice-chancellor, he was the provost of the College of Basic and Applied Sciences at the University of Ghana. In December 2020, Elsie Kaufmann was appointed an associate professor at the University of Ghana, and was appointed the Dean of the School of Engineering Sciences on 1 August 2022.

Professor John Owusu Gyapong is a Ghanaian Professor of Epidemiology. He is currently the Vice Chancellor of the University of Health and Allied Sciences, Ho Ghana.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Gordon Awandare</span> Ghanaian parasitologist

Gordon Akanzuwine Awandare is a Ghanaian parasitologist and the Pro-Vice Chancellor in charge of Academic and Student Affairs at the University of Ghana. Prior to his appointment in January 2022, He was the founding Director of the West African Center for Cell Biology of Infectious Pathogens (WACCBIP). He is the current chairman of the CKT-UTAS governing council and the Africa Global Editor of the Experimental Biology and Medicine (EBM) journal.

Samuel Nii Odai is a Ghanaian professor of Hydraulics and Water Resources, and a serving Vice Chancellor of Accra Technical University. He is a Commonwealth Academic Fellow, and a recipient of the National Best Research Scientist Gold Award for water, environment and sanitation.

Ellis Owusu-Dabo is a Ghanaian academic and pro vice-chancellor of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology.
