Historic Visit of the Mion Lana to the Islamic University College, Ghana

The Islamic University College, Ghana (IUCG), on Wednesday, November 5, 2025, had the honor of hosting a distinguished delegation from the Mion Traditional Area of the Dagbon Kingdom in the Northern Region. The delegation was led by His Eminence, Mion Lana Alhassan Mahama.

The visit marked a truly historic moment in IUCG’s 25-year journey, as it was the first time a traditional ruler from the Mion Traditional Area had visited the university.

Upon arrival, the Mion Lana and his entourage—comprising the Zangonaa of Botwe, Alhaj Abdul Qadr, and Alhaj Seebaway Iddris—were warmly received by the President of IUCG, Dr. Haadi Kamal Ezzat, alongside members of the university community. The delegation was formally introduced by the Mion Lana’s Secretary, Mohammed Baba.

In his welcome address, Dr. Ezzat expressed deep appreciation to the Mion Lana for honoring the university with his presence. He emphasized that the visit symbolized unity and mutual respect between the people of the North and the university community. Dr. Ezzat also shared IUCG’s vision to establish a new campus in the Northern Region, aimed at expanding access to higher education for students in that part of the country.

As part of the ceremony, Dr. Ezzat presented a special gift from Dr. Abbasi, President of Al-Mustapha International University in Iran, to the Mion Lana. He further announced that any student presenting a recommendation letter from the Mion Lana would receive a tuition fee waiver, as a gesture of partnership and encouragement for education in the North.

Delivering the Mion Lana’s message, Secretary Mohammed Baba highlighted the cultural and religious ties between the Dagbon people and the wider Muslim community, referencing the Damba Festival, which celebrates the birth of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). The Mion Lana reaffirmed his belief in the power of education and urged IUCG to make its presence felt in the Northern Region, assuring that such a campus would receive full support from the people of Dagbon.

A key highlight of the visit was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between IUCG and the Dagbon Traditional Council, which will promote collaboration in education, research, and cultural exchange.

During the event, Dr. Seebaway Zakaria, a faculty member of IUCG, called on northern leaders and Members of Parliament to support students aspiring to study at the university. He also commended the continued contributions of IUCG’s Iranian partners, acknowledging their vital role in the institution’s growth and development.

The historic visit concluded with warm exchanges of goodwill and a shared commitment to deepening the bond between the Islamic University College, Ghana, and the Mion Traditional Area. Both parties pledged to work together to advance education and strengthen cultural understanding for the benefit of future generations. [3]
