Niger Delta University [1] (NDU) is in Wilberforce Island, Bayelsa State [2] in the southern part of Nigeria. [3] It was established in 2000. [4] It is a Bayelsa state [2] government-funded university. [5] In 2002, It was established by Chief DSP Alamieyeseigha, then governor of Bayelsa state. [6] [7] It has two main campuses, [8] one in the state capital, Yenagoa, [9] which contains the law faculty, and the other in Amassoma. It also has its teaching hospital known as Niger Delta University Teaching Hospital [10] (NDUTH) in Okolobiri. [11]

The university offers education at Bachelor, Masters and PhD levels. [12] It is a member of the Association of Commonwealth Universities. It is accredited and recognized by the National Universities Commission (NUC) [5]

The establishment of the university through a law in 2000 was a significant turning-point in the educational and socio-economic history of Bayelsa State in particular and Nigeria in general. [15]

The university, which started academic activities in the 2001/2002 session, had its pioneer set of graduating students in the 2004/2005 academic year. Although, the student population was only 1,039 at inception, this increased to 4,636 in 2003/2004 and later 10,294 in 2006/2007. [15] The university maintains the quota provided by the National Universities Commission (NUC). There has been a significant increase in the number of academic and non-teaching staff.

Campuses

The university is in Wilberforce Island, approximately 32 km from the state capital Yenagoa and is made up of three campuses: Gloryland (main campus), College of Health Sciences, and the temporary campus of the Faculty of Law in Yenagoa. A new campus, which is an extension of the Gloryland campus, is being developed with Standard Faculty buildings, School of Postgraduate Studies, DOCERAD, Senate Building(Under Construction), inter alia. Bayelsa is a state in the South South region of Nigeria, located in the core of the Niger Delta. Bayelsa State was created in 1996 and was carved out from Rivers State, making it one of the newest states in the federation. The capital, Yenagoa, is susceptible to high risk of annual flooding. It shares a boundary with Rivers State to the east and Delta State to the north across the Niger River for 17 km and the Forçados River for 198 km, with the waters of the Atlantic Ocean dominating its southern borders. It has a total area of 10,773 square kilometres (4,159 sq mi). The state comprises eight local government areas: Ekeremor, Kolokuma/Opokuma, Yenagoa, Nembe, Ogbia, Sagbama, Brass and Southern Ijaw. The state is the smallest in Nigeria by population as of the 2006 census. Being in the Niger Delta, Bayelsa State has a riverine and estuarine setting, with bodies of water within the state preventing the development of significant road infrastructure.

Yenagoa is a Local Government Area and capital city of Bayelsa State, southern Nigeria. It is located at the southern part of the country at coordinates 4°55′29″N6°15′51″E.

Madonna University is the first Catholic university in Nigeria. It was accredited by National Universities Commission. Madonna University Nigeria has three campuses that are located in Elele - Rivers State, Okija - Anambra State and Akpugo - Enugu State. The campuses have different Faculties with Departments. Samson Siasia Sports Stadium is a multi-use stadium located in the Yenagoa metropolis, Nigeria. It is currently used mostly for football matches and it is the home stadium of both Ocean Boys FC and the Bayelsa United. The stadium has a capacity of 5,000 people. Before 2009, it was known as the Yenagoa Township Stadium. It was rededicated in 2009 and was named after Samson Siasia. Samson Siasia is a former Nigerian soccer player who has coached a number of teams and recorded a number of successes. The Samson Siasia stadium is the first environmentally friendly astro turf pitch in Africa. The astro turf pitch was built by Monimichelle Sports Facility Construction and Development Ltd.

The Epie and Atissa are two Nations that live along Epie Creek, northeast of Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, Nigeria. Together, they are commonly known as the Epie-Atissa. The influx of the Engenni migrants to the present location of Epie-Atissa led to its expansion. The Engenni people belong to the Edoid group who share cultural similarity with the Ijaw and the Engenni.

Southern Ijaw is a Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, Southern part of Nigeria. Its headquarters are in the town of Oporoma in the north of the area at 4°48′17″N6°04′44″E. The area has a coastline of approximately 60 km on the Bight of Benin.

The Delta State University, Abraka - popularly known as DELSU - is a State government-owned university in Nigeria with the main campus located at Abraka, Delta State and its sub-campus at Oleh. The Oleh campus was established with the 1995 Amended Edict. The university is a multiple-campus university having two campuses within a distance of about 52 km apart. Currently, with a student population of about 22,000, the university offers a range of programmes from the full-time certificate, diploma and degree programmes to part-time evening and weekend degree programmes. DELSU offers postgraduate studies up to a doctoral level. DELSU owns a staff/student counselling centre, an e-learning centre, student accommodation and sporting facilities amidst other infrastructures. The Federal University Otuoke is a Federal Government-owned University sited in Otuoke, a town in Ogbia local government area of Bayelsa State, Southern Nigeria. The university is one of the nine new Federal Universities established by the Federal Government of Nigeria in February 2011 under the administration of president, Dr Goodluck Jonathan. Federal University Otuoke is sited in the heart of the oil-rich Niger-Delta Region of Bayelsa State. The university was established in 2011 and started with 282 pioneer students. The university has six (6) faculties and offers degree courses at undergraduate levels. and Post Graduate Levels - offering Post Graduate Diploma, Masters, and Doctorate Degrees.
