The Federal University of Technology Akure (also known as FUT Akure or simply FUTA) is a federal government-owned university located in Akure, Ondo State, southwestern Nigeria. It was founded in 1981, [1] as part of efforts by the federal government of Nigeria to create universities that specialize in producing graduates with practical as well as theoretical knowledge of technologies. [2]

Other universities of technology established around the same time were the Federal University of Technology Owerri, the Federal University of Technology, Makurdi (FUT Makurdi), which later metamorphosed into the present University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), the Federal University of Technology, Minna, the Federal University of Technology, Yola (now Modibbo Adama University of Technology, Yola), and the Federal University of Technology Bauchi (now Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University [3] ).

Ranking

The Federal University of Technology Akure was ranked the third-best university and the best university of technology in Nigeria by Webometrics in January 2020. [4] In 2022, It was ranked as the 5th best university in Nigeria by Times Higher Education World University Rankings . [5] [6] FUTA is 3rd in the 2024 Scientific Index Ranking of Universities in Nigeria [2] ,7th in Webometrics Ranking [7] and 3rd in Times Higher ranking of Nigerian Universities. [8]

Among the notable structures in the university is the central library, Albert Ilemobade Library, located just beside the School of Engineering and Engineering Technology. The library, which accommodates students, has volumes in many fields of study. Students are required to complete their library registration in their first year of admission to ensure access. [10]

The Library is named after Professor Albert Ilemobade, who was the second Vice-Chancellor of the university. It was established in 1982, based on the vision of the founding fathers and matriarch of the institution to enhance the learning of its students. It started in the Old Library Complex located at Oba Kekere (Mini campus). By April 2006, it moved to its permanent two-stores building which covers a floor space area of 1,614.74 m² and can sit 2,500 readers at a time. [11]

It is open to all senior staff, students of the institution, and alumni of the university. The library also admits outside learners with valid reasons and a letter of introduction from a recognized university official (i.e., dean of a faculty, head of department from the visitor's school or director of an organization). [12] [13]

Student Radio

The university operates a radio station, FUTA Radio [14] [15] (93.1MHz), on the campus.

Programs include a morning news bulletin, a talk show on education, a music program, a special segment highlighting achievements and success stories of students, faculty, and alumni, and a podcast on social issues. [14]

Campus Facilities

The facilities include libraries, lecture halls, classrooms, laboratories, research centers, and computer centers with provided Wi-Fi access.

Sports facilities include sports fields, courts, gyms, student hostels, cafeterias and food courts, a health center, auditoriums, and event spaces.

Student Organizations and Clubs

The Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA) offers a wide range of student organizations and clubs that cater to diverse interests, hobbies, and academic pursuits. These include the Student Union Government (SUG), Professional and Academic Societies, Cultural and Arts Clubs, and Cultural and Drama Society. The FUTASU serves as a platform for students to express their concerns, advocate for their rights, and engage in decision-making processes. The FUTASU works with the university management to improve the quality of education and student welfare. The institution boasts over 200 registered clubs and student organization which includes but is not limited to social and community service clubs, sports clubs, entrepreneurial and innovation clubs, hobby and special interest clubs, and student organizations and clubs to enrich the student experience, foster personal growth, and promote a sense of belonging within the university community. Housing and Residence

On-campus residence halls are located close to academic buildings, libraries, and other university facilities, with basic amenities such as study areas, common lounges, and laundry facilities. There are single and shared rooms, and each residence hall is staffed with resident assistants and hall supervisors. FUTA's residence halls organize activities and programs to promote community engagement and student development. Off-campus housing resources are provided to help students find suitable accommodations. [18]

Student Services and Support

FUTA offers a range of services and resources. These include academic advising, counseling and psychological services, health services, and career development and employment services. Academic advising helps students plan their academic trajectories; counseling and psychological services support mental and emotional well-being; health services provide basic medical care; and career development and employment services prepare students for successful careers. FUTA provides career development services, financial aid and scholarships, [19] disability support services, student engagement and extracurricular activities, and academic, personal, and career-oriented resources. [20] [21]

FUTA Research Teams

The Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA) is home to several research teams that contribute to advancements in various fields of study. These research teams consist of faculty members, researchers, and students. Here are some examples of FUTA's research teams: [18]

Engineering and Technology Research Team

FUTA's engineering and technology research team focuses on advancements in fields such as civil engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, computer science, and more. These researchers explore areas such as renewable energy, sustainable infrastructure, robotics, artificial intelligence, computer networks, software engineering, and emerging technologies. [22]

Agricultural and Environmental Research Team

FUTA's agricultural and environmental research team conducts research to enhance agricultural practices, sustainable food production, and environmental conservation. Researchers in this team focus on areas such as crop science, soil science, plant breeding, agricultural engineering, environmental management, and biodiversity conservation. [22] [23]

Health and Biomedical Research Team

FUTA's health and biomedical research team focuses on research related to healthcare, biomedical sciences, and public health. These researchers explore areas such as medical diagnostics, drug discovery, health systems, epidemiology, health informatics, and healthcare technology. [24]

Science and Technology Research Team

FUTA's science and technology research team encompasses various scientific disciplines, including chemistry, physics, mathematics, biology, and bioinformatics. Researchers in this team investigate areas such as materials science, nanotechnology, computational modeling, mathematical modeling, biotechnology, and biodiversity. Their research contributes to scientific discoveries, technological advancements, and a deeper understanding of the fundamental principles of the natural world. [25]

Social Sciences and Humanities Research Team

FUTA also has a research team focused on social sciences and humanities disciplines. Researchers in this team explore areas such as economics, sociology, psychology, language studies, history, and cultural studies.

Joseph Adeola Fuwape is a Nigerian academic who served as the seventh substantive vice chancellor of the Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA) from May 2017 to May 2022. His appointment was ratified by the governing council of the institution on 18 May 2017. He succeeded Prof. Adebiyi Daramola. Before then, he was the vice chancellor at Salem University.

Albert Adeoye Ilemobade was one of Nigeria’s leading veterinary parasitologist who had a distinguished career in Nigeria and internationally. He served as vice chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, Akure from 1987 to 1995 before he retired from the civil service in 1995.

Sunday Roberts Ogunduyile is a Nigerian educator and an academic administrator. As a professor of Industrial Design, he has served as Dean of School of Environmental Technology at the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA) and as Director of FUTA Business Development Company. He is currently Vice Chancellor of Ondo State University of Science and Technology.

Ibiyinka A. Fuwape is a Nigerian academic, professor in physics and the 2nd substantive Vice-Chancellor of the Michael and Cecilia Ibru University, a private university in Nigeria.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Federal University Kashere</span> University in Nigeria

The Federal University of Kashere, also known as FUKashere, is a public conventional university situated in the North Eastern part of Nigeria. The recently established university is situated in the small city of Kashere, an administrative territory of Pindiga, Akko local government in Gombe State, Nigeria. Before her appointment, she held various positions and served on University Committees at the University of Ilorin as Chairman and Member.

Adebiyi Gregory Daramola was a Nigerian academic and professor of agricultural economics, who served as the Vice-chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, Akure from May 2012 to May 2017.

Adebisi Mojeed Balogun is a Nigerian agricultural biochemist, educator, nutritionist, academic and professor of fish nutrition, who served as the vice-chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, Akure from January 2007 to January 2012.
