Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, also called UNIZIK or NAU in short is a federal university in Nigeria. It consists of two campuses in Anambra State. [4] Its main campus is in Awka (the capital of Anambra State), while its other campus is in Nnewi. There are also other campuses of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka. These include Agulu in Aniocha local government area and Ifite-Ogwuari [5] in Ayamelum local government area in Anambra State. [6] This makes Nnamdi Azikiwe University to operate in the three Senatorial Districts in Anambra State, Nigeria having Awka campus, in Anambra Central Senatorial District, Nnewi in Anambra North Senatorial District and Ifite-Ogwuari in Anambra North Senatorial District, respectively.

Contents

These campuses have libraries and information services that serve the students, academic and non-academic staff. It is one of the federal universities which are overseen and accredited by the National Universities Commission. The university is named after late Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe. [4]

The academic staff of the university belong to Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU). The staff union is known to grant scholarship to indigent students just like other philanthropists. [7] It has a total population of about 34,000 students.

History

Nnamdi Azikiwe University came into being as an offshoot of the defunct Anambra State University of Technology (ASUTECH). [8] ASUTECH which was established through Law No. 7 of 30 July, 1980 by the Government of the old Anambra that operated as a multi-campus university, with campuses in Abakiliki, Enugu, Awka and Nnewi. In 1991, following the split of the old Anambra State into Anambra and Enugu States, the Awka and Nnewi campuses of the former ASUTECH were constituted into Nnamdi Azikiwe University by the Anambra State Edict No.5 26 November, 1991. [9] Nnamdi Azikiwe University was taken over by the Federal Government by Decree No. 34 on 15 July, 1992. [10]

In 1991, after the former Anambra State was split into Anambra and Enugu States, the Awka and Nnewi campuses of the former Anambra State University of Technology (ASUTECH) were combined into Nnamdi Azikiwe University, which was later taken over by Federal government. [11] The university is named after Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, the first president of Nigeria. The Awka Campus became Nnamdi Azikiwe University. In 1992, the Federal Government of Nigeria took over the university from Anambra State. Nnamdi Azikiwe University, thus, became a Federal University. [1]

The main campus of the university is located along Onitsha – Enugu Expressway, Awka, while the second campus is at Nnewi (NAUTH and Okofia) and the third campus is at Agulu (Faculty of Pharmacy). [4]

The University Library in Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Nigeria is named - Professor Festus Aghagbo Nwako Library. [12] It is located on the main campus at the permanent site in Awka, the capital of Anambra State. However, there are libraries on the other campuses in Nnewi and Agulu. [13] These libraries are managed by librarians and have internet availability and accessibility. [14] They have the sole responsibility of making information resources and facilities accessible to the students, staff, other institutions, and all the members of the academic community. The University library facilities are used for other activities by members of the academic community like cultural festivals. [15] In 2020, the Vice Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Professor Charles Esimone upgraded the internet bandwidth to internet 3-STM-1 which improved the library and information access in Awka campus, Agulu campus and Nnewi Teaching hospital, respectively. [16]

The Medical Library in Nnewi Campus is for the College of Health Sciences of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka. It is a connection of three libraries which are the Main Library the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital, Nnewi, the Pre-Clinical Campus at Okofia also in Nnewi and the Diagnostic and Healthcare Centre at Neni in Anaocha Local Government Area of Anambra State. [17]

The medical library started operations with a small collection in 1986 when it was formerly Anambra State University of Technology (ASUTECH) before the creation of the new Anambra State in 1991. It became a full medical library that serve medical students, teaching staff, medical and paramedical personnel, and other health practitioners in 1992 in a temporary building. The library was relocated in the year 2000 to a Medical Library Complex in the teaching hospital. Then, it had18,547 books and 568 journal titles which provided literature and other information-related resources. [17]

The library creates awareness, provides physical and e-resources and services to the users. [18] There are also provision of current awareness services, references, databases, reprographic services, Selective Dissemination of Information, Document Delivery Services, online customer services and document delivery services. [19] The Medical Library of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka has benefitted from individuals and organizations who donated information resources. These have increased the collection of medical libraries. [17]

The libraries in Nnamdi Azikiwe University in Awka, Nnew and Agulu still face challenges in delivering effective and efficient services. These include, difficulty in accessing resources, computer hanging, erratic power supply, inadequate financial support and low ICT literacy. [19]

Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU)

ASUU is the umbrella that holds all the academic staff in the government universities in Nigeria. It has influence over the tertiary educational system in Nigeria. [20] However, the Unizik Chapter of the Academic Union of Universities (ASUU) has been impacting indigent students' lives in ensuring that those students do not drop out of school. In 2019/2020 academic session, 30 indigent students of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Anambra State, were selected from different faculties in the university. [21] They benefited from N1.5million scholarship awards by the members of Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) of the institution. Each beneficiary was given N50,000 each to help in sustaining them in the institution. [22] The ASUU NAU branch was revived in 2012. Prof Ike Odimegwu was the first ASUU NAU branch chairman after the inauguration in 2012.

The Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) is a university in Nigeria that was founded as Anambra State University of Technology (ASUTECH) on 30 July 1980, by the Executive Governor of Anambra State, Chief Dr Jim Ifeanyichukwu Nwobodo. The creation of Enugu State out of Anambra State in 1991 by the then Military President General Ibrahim Gbadamasi Babangida, transformed ASUTECH into Enugu State University of Science and Technology.

Awka'Awka South Local Government Area (LGA) is made up of nine towns, namely, Amawbia, Awka, Ezinato, Isiagu, Mbaukwu, Nibo, Nise, Okpuno and Umuawulu. There are three major streets that span this area, which are the Zik Avenue, Works Road and Arthur Eze Avenue. In the past, the people of Awka South LGA were well known for blacksmithing. Today they are respected among the Igbo people of Nigeria for their technical and business skills.

Ayamelum is a local government area (LGA) in Anambra state, in the southeastern part of Nigeria with headquarters in Anaku. The towns that make up the local government are Anaku, Umueje, Omasi, Igbakwu, Umumbo, Omor, Umuerum, and Ifite Ogwari. Ayamelum’s area is situated at the border between Enugu state and Anambra state. The communities in the area are notable for food production.

James Ifeanyichukwu Nwobodo is a Nigerian businessman and politician who was governor of Anambra State (1979–1983) during the Nigerian Second Republic and was Senator for Enugu East Senatorial District in Enugu State (1999–2003). In 2003, he ran unsuccessfully in the Nigerian Presidential elections.

Cyril Agodi Onwumechili was a Nigerian physicist, academic administrator, and professor of geophysics at the University of Ibadan and later University of Nigeria, Nsukka. He was the fourth Vice Chancellor of the University of Ife from January 1979 to December 1982 and the former President/Vice Chancellor of the Anambra State University of Technology, Enugu, Nigeria, from January 1983 to December 1986. He delivered the Ahiajoku lecture on 20 November 2000. He was the first Nigerian geophysicist and the second president of the Nigerian Academy of Science. He was elected as president of the Academy in 1979 to succeed Professor Victor Adenuga Oyenuga, the first emeritus professor of the University of Ibadan and the first African professor of Agricultural science.

Dr. Nkem Okeke is a Nigerian Politician who was the Deputy Governor of Anambra State from 17 March 2014 to 17 March 2022 He first served as Anambra State Commissioner for Economic Planning, and again as Anambra State Commissioner for Works and Transport in the administration of Governor Peter Obi and later went back to immerse himself in academia as lecturer and head of department of economics at Nnamdi Azikiwe University.

Joy Chinwe Eyisi is a Nigerian professor, author, scholar, educationalist, and philanthropist of Igbo descent. Between 2006 and 2011, she was Head of Department, English Language and Literature, Faculty of Arts, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, (NAU), Awka, Anambra State. She is now Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) of National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), a position she assumed on 26 October 2017. Eyisi, who was hitherto the Centre Director of NOUN's Study Centre in the National Assembly in Abuja, emerged winner of the election held by the University Senate on 25 October 2017. She succeeds Professor Patrick Eya as the University's first female Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic).

Joseph Eberendu Ahaneku is an academic and Consultant Chemical Pathologist of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Nigeria. Ahaneku is the immediate past Vice Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka. He is from Nnarambia Ahiara Ahiazu Mbaise, Imo State, Nigeria.

Chinyere Stella Okunna is the first female professor in Mass communication in Nigeria. She has served in various capacities as an administrator and educationist in the academia and in the public/political arena. Charles Okechukwu Esimone is a Nigerian professor of biopharmaceutics and pharmaceutical biotechnology who currently serves as the vice-chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka, Nigeria. He is the first professor of pharmaceutical microbiology in South-Eastern Nigeria.

Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital is a federal government of Nigeria teaching hospital located in Nnewi, Anambra state. The current chief medical director is Joseph Ugboaja.

Christian Nwachukwu Okeke is a professor of International Law, Jurisprudence and Comparative Law at Golden Gate University School of Law, San Francisco California. He is the Director of Sompong Sucharitkul Center for Advanced International Legal Studies and the director of LL.M. and S.J.D. Programs in international legal studies of the institution. He is a former Emeritus Pioneer Dean of Faculty Law at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Nigeria, and a recipient of Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice. Basil Chukwuemeka Ezeanolue is a Nigerian professor of Otolaryngology. He was a member of senate and he is a fellow of the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria, fellow of the West African College of Surgeons in the Faculty of Otorhinolaryngology, and Fellow of the American Academy of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery. Basil Ezeanolue was, at several times, the Head of Department of Otolaryngology at the Faculty of Medical Sciences, University of Nigeria, Ituku Ozalla, Enugu, and Dean, Faculty of Medical Sciences, University of Nigeria. Basil Ezeanolue was the Secretary and later President of the Otorhinolaryngological Society of Nigeria. He delivered the 82nd Inaugural Lecture of the University of Nigeria, at Enugu Nigeria, entitled, "Hear the Voice" on 17 July 2014. It was also the first inaugural lecture coming from the Department of Otolaryngology of the University of Nigeria. Ezeanolue also delivered the 6th Valedictory Lecture of the University of Nigeria entitled, "Challenges of balancing work with life, Geriatric Otorhinolaryngology and living post-work life of retirement - A discourse of the experiences and the lessons learnt from the Nigeria University System and Health Services Sectors perspectives of an Academic Clinical Otorhinolaryngologist Head and Neck Surgeon" on 10 November 2023. He is the Founder and Surgeon-in-Chief of Balsam Clinics, Enugu, Nigeria. He was also a member of the Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu Teaching Hospital Governing Board, Awka,, Anambra State. On 20 September 2018, he delivered the 36th Convocation Lecture of the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria, entitled, "Do Not Be Afraid And Do Not Fail To Rescue – a discourse on the challenges confronting Nigeria Health Sector" at Ijanikin, Lagos. Basil Ezeanolue's publications have been cited 440 times according to the AD Scientific index ranking. and 443 times according to the google scholar index.

Obioma Nwaorgu is a Nigerian parasitologist and epidemiologist. She is an emeritus professor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University. She was educated at the University of Nigeria and University of Cambridge. Nwaorgu is remembered for her research and initiatives to eradicate the parasites associated with Guinea worm disease, malaria, river blindness, and snail fever. She was the lead researcher on twelve tropical disease research projects sponsored by the World Health Organisation. Nwaorgu also was the founder and president of the NGO Global Health and Awareness Research Foundation (GHARF), which provided health education and empowerment training for women and youth. She became a fellow of the Nigerian Academy of Science in 2011, and is also a fellow of the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene of London.
