Covenant University(CU) is a private Christian university in Ota, Ogun State, Nigeria. [1] [2] [3] It is affiliated with Living Faith Church Worldwide and is a member of the Association of Commonwealth Universities, Association of African Universities, and National Universities Commission. [4] [5] In 2019, Covenant University became the first Nigerian university to be ranked in the top 401-500 category of world universities by Times Higher Education . [6] [7]

History and governance

The process of founding Covenant University (CU) started in October 1999, one month after the dedication of the Faith Tabernacle in Ota. The university is a product of the Liberation Commission and was established by the World Mission Agency and the Living Faith Church Worldwide. Covenant University opened on 21 October 2002 [8] [9] in Canaanland, Ota, with a Pentecostal Christian mission ethos. It was founded by David Oyedepo, the presiding Bishop of Living Faith Church Worldwide, who is chancellor of the university. [10]

Pastor Abraham Ojeme was appointed pro-chancellor of the university on 23 September 2013. [11] [12]

Covenant University academic programmes run in four colleges: the College of Management and Social Sciences (CMSS), [13] the College of Leadership Development Studies (CLDS), [14] the College of Engineering (COE) [15] and the College of Science and Technology (CST). [16] Covenant University runs postgraduate programmes [17] in the entire curriculum listed above. The university owns a stadium facility with a swimming pool and lawn tennis, table tennis, basketball and volleyball courts. Covenant University is one of the affiliated universities of the Nigeria Private University Games Association. [18] [19]

University Library (Centre for Learning Resources)

Covenant University's Centre for Learning Resources, otherwise known as the university library, [20] is situated between the female halls of residence, Dorcas Hall and Esther Hall areas of the campus, and directly opposite the university chapel. The total floor area of the complex is 11,300 m2. The library complex is an edifice with three floors, reputed to be one of the largest in Africa. [20] It is designed as a glass structure. It is located amidst the college buildings, the university chapel and the halls of residence. [20] It can accommodate up to 3000 readers and about 500 research staff and postgraduate students. [21] [22]

Open access publishing

In January 2011, Covenant University adopted a policy that mandated all referred publications in journals, conferences and books to be deposited in the university open access repository. This applied to faculty and postgraduate students alike. [23]

Secondary school

Covenant University Secondary School was established on October 14, 2010, to cater for the young population within the university environment. [24]

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Delta State</span> State in southern Nigeria

Delta State is a state in the South-South geopolitical zone of Nigeria. Named after the Niger Delta—a large part of which is in the state—the state was formed from the former Bendel State on August 27, 1991. Bordered on the north by Edo State, the east by Anambra and Rivers states, and that south by Bayelsa State while to the west is the Bight of Benin which covers about 160 kilometres of the state's coastline. Created in 1991 from the former Bendel State, it is also known as the heart beat of the nation. Edo State borders Kogi State to the north for 133 km and across the Niger River for 81 km to the northeast, Anambra State to the east for about four km across the Niger River, Delta State to the southeast and south for 350 km, and Ondo State to the west.

The University of Ibadan (UI) is a public research university in Ibadan, Nigeria. The university was once a college of the University of London. The college was established in 1948 as University College Ibadan, one of many colleges within the University of London. It became an independent university in 1962 and is the oldest degree-awarding institution in Nigeria. Through its graduate network, the University of Ibadan has contributed to the political, industrial, economic and cultural development of Nigeria.

Lagos State University, also known as LASU, is located in Ojo, with sub-campuses at Ikeja and Epe both towns in Lagos State, Nigeria. The university was established in 1983 by the enabling law of Lagos State, for the advancement of learning and establishment of academic excellence; its motto being For Truth and Service. The university caters for over 35,000 students. The University was established during the Administration of Late Lateef Kayode Jakande. The university offers diploma, degree and post graduate programmes, including an MBA programme. LASU was ranked among the top 600 universities in the world by the Times Higher Education World University Rankings for 2020. On 23 June, 2021, LASU emerged as the best young university in Nigeria having been below the age of 50 years to be added. Times Higher Education ranked the Lagos State University as the second best university in Nigeria on the 2 September 2020, and was the only state university included in the rankings for 2022. The university has attracted international funding, including for the establishment of a World Bank Group Africa Centre for Excellence on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics.

The University of Calabar is a federal university situated in Calabar, Cross River State, Nigeria. It is one of Nigeria's second-generation federal universities. The University of Calabar was a campus of the University of Nigeria until 1975. The present Vice Chancellor is Dr. Florence B. Obi (Professor). University of Ilorin, also known as Unilorin, is a federal government-owned university in Ilorin, Kwara State, Nigeria. It was established by a decree of the federal military government in August, 1975. The establishment aimed to implement one of the educational directives of the Third National Development Plan, which was aimed at providing more opportunities for Nigerians aspiring to acquire university education and to generate high-level manpower, which is vital for the rapidly expanding economy. Compared to other higher institutions of learning in the country, the institution has one of the largest land areas, covering approximately 15,000 hectares of land. It is reported by Joint Admission Matriculation Board (JAMB) to be the most sought-after Nigerian university in 2021. Faith Tabernacle is an evangelical megachurch and the headquarters church of Living Faith Church Worldwide. It is at Canaanland, Ota, Lagos, Nigeria, current neo-charismatic movement. The senior pastor of this community is David Oyedepo since its founding in 1983. In 2023, the attendance is 100,000+ people.

Charles Korede Ayo was a Nigerian academic, administrator and vice-chancellor of the Covenant University. Prior to succeeding Aize Obayan as Vice Chancellor, he was the head of the Department of Computer and Information Sciences. He was also involved in research on computer and communications topics, such as electronic commerce and mobile computing. Ayo placed emphasis on leadership training at Covenant University, as well as on academic performance and "Godly standards." He sought to make Covenant University "one of the top 10 universities in the world" within a decade.

Taiwo Olubunmi Abioye is a Nigerian professor of English with specialization in Stylistics and applied linguistics. She is the first woman to be Deputy Vice Chancellor in Covenant University.

Ekundayo Adeyinka Adeyemi was a Nigerian architect and academic who was a distinguished professor of architecture at Covenant University, Ota. In 1975, Adeyemi attained professorship at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria a promotion that made him the first professor of architecture in Nigeria and Sub-Saharan Africa. He was acting vice chancellor of the Federal University of Technology Akure from December 1999 to September 2001.

Aderemi Aaron-Anthony Atayero is a Nigerian engineer who served as the 4th substantive vice chancellor of Covenant University, Nigeria. He previously served as the first academic deputy vice-chancellor, Coordinator School of Engineering, and twice as head of department of Electrical and Information Engineering of Covenant University.

Cowbellpedia Secondary Schools Mathematics TV Quiz Show is a Nigerian national mathematics television quiz show that debuted in 2015. It was created by Oladapo Ojo.

Akan Williams is a Nigerian academic, professor of analytical/environmental chemistry, and 6th vice-chancellor of the Covenant University. Prior to succeeding AAA Atayero as Vice-Chancellor, he was the Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Head, Department of Chemistry, Covenant University.

Kings University is a private university in Nigeria, founded in 2015 and located in the Odeomu area of Osun State. The university was established by the Kingsway International Christian Centre, a church-owned by Pastor Matthew Ashimolowo who also happens to be the Chancellor of Kings University.
