Akwa Ibom State University (AKSU) was conceived and founded by the Akwa Ibom State Government. Unity of people with a passion to constantly seek knowledge that addresses practical issues of development in Nigeria. [1] The university opened its doors to its pioneer students in the 2010/2011 academic year. [2]
At conception, the university was to be located within Akwa Ibom State's Technology Triangle at the University Town. However, the administration of the Akwa Ibom State Government have changed the enabling law of the university into a multi-campus institution with the main campus at Ikot Akpaden, Mkpat Enin L.G.A and a second campus fondly known as Abak Campus situated at Obio Akpa, Oruk Anam L.G.A. [2] The goals of the university have been modified by the administration of the State Government in order to transform the university into a conventional university whose focus is not just Technology and Applied Science but also on Arts. [3] In line with this transformation, the name of the institution has been changed from Akwa Ibom State University of Technology to Akwa Ibom State University. [4]
On October 18, 2000, at Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria, the Executive Governor of Akwa Ibom State at the time, Arc (Obong) Victor Attah inaugurated a committee for the establishment of Akwa Ibom State University of Technology. [5]
The committee members included Professor Ephraim E. Okon, Professor Ekong E. Ekong, Professor Ulo K. Enyenihi, Professor Reuben K. Udo, Professor E. W. Mbipom, Engr. Mrs. Mayen Adetiba, Engr. Esio O. Mboho, Engr. Akpan Ufot Ukpoho, Engr. Uyai Ekaette, Dr. Usen J. Antia, Sir Pius Wilson, Dr. Engineer Linus Asuquo, Mr. Moses Essien, Dr. Ini Udoka, Professor Joe Uyanga, Mr. E. J. Akpan.

There was a mandate to establish AKUTECH, a project which has been embraced by the former Executive Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Obong (Barr) Godswill Akpabio [7] [8] leading to the enactment of the University Law on September 15, 2009, by the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly. [9]
More than 60 faculty members are undergoing AKSU-sponsored postgraduate training in universities in Europe, North America, and Singapore. [13] More centers of excellence have been identified in South America, Japan and other Asian countries for further collaboration and manpower development. [14]

Akwa Ibom State is a state in the South-South geopolitical zone of Nigeria. It borders Cross River State to the east, Rivers State and Abia State to the west and north-west, and to the south by the Atlantic Ocean. The state takes its name from the Qua Iboe River which bisects the state before flowing into the Bight of Bonny. Akwa Ibom was split from Cross River State in 1987 with her capital Uyo and with 31 local government areas.

Chief Godswill Obot Akpabio is a Nigerian lawyer and politician who is currently serving as the 15th president of the Nigerian Senate since 2023. He was first elected as Senator representing Akwa Ibom North-West Senatorial District in 2015, lost in the 2019 senatorial elections and won in the 2023 elections. He also served as minister for Niger Delta Affairs from 2019 up till 2022 when he resigned to seek re-election into the Nigerian senate. He had previously served as the Governor of Akwa Ibom State from 2007 to 2015.
The Akwa Ibom State Association of Nigeria, USA Inc. (AKISAN) National Convention is the highest legislative activity of AKISAN and is generally held in August of every year. Divided into Business and General Sessions, the Convention is a gathering of all the chapters of the Association for legislative, cultural and social reasons. Until the 1990 gathering in Atlanta, Georgia, the convention was known as the Colloquium.

Dakkada Football Club is a Nigerian football club. They played in the Nigerian Professional Football League after gaining promotion from the Nigeria National League on 22 July 2019. In May 2023, the club relegated to the Nigeria National League.
The Godswill Akpabio International Stadium is a 30,000 capacity national sports stadium located in Uyo, the state capital of Akwa Ibom. The stadium serves as a home to the Nigerian Super Eagles as well as a center for various social, cultural, Political and religious events. The contract for the construction of the Akwa Ibom International Stadium complex and Games Village was awarded in 2012 to Julius Berger and was completed in 2014. The 30,000 seater ultra modern multipurpose sports complex was modeled after Allianz Arena.
Ritman University is located in Ikot Ekpene, Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. Ritman University, RU is a privately owned and managed university in Nigeria. Ritman University offers various undergraduate courses/programs. The National University Commission (NUC) granted operational license to Ritman University on March 5, 2015, the university began academic activities on November 23, 2015. Ritman University was founded by Emmanuel Ibok Essien, a former Senator who represented the North West Senatorial District of Akwa Ibom State at the 4th Nigerian National Assembly (Senate) between (1999-2003). Senator Essien established the university according to him as “a response to the yearning of renascent Africans for an entrepreneurial university that develops the mind for total productivity, inculcate positive values and offers resources for navigating the world with ease”. Ritman University has an estimated student population of about 1,000 students spread across its three faculties.
Christopher Stephen Obong Ekpenyong is a Nigerian politician and former Deputy governor of Akwa Ibom State. He was elected to the Nigerian Senate in 2019 to represent Akwa Ibom North-West senatorial district.
Ibom Multi-Specialty Hospital is situated in Ekit Itam II along Uyo-Ikot Ekpene Road, Akwa Ibom State. It is popularly referred to as "ISH".
Unyime Josiah Idem is a Nigerian businessman, politician, philanthropist and honourable member representing Oruk Anam/Ukanafun federal constituency in the House of Representatives. First elected to the House in the 9th Assembly, he currently serves as Chairman House Committee on Public Procurement in the 10th Assembly. As of September 2024, Idem has sponsored 22 establishment and amendment bills and 28 motions of "urgent national importance". He is the founder of Idems Ultimate Limited- a telecommunications service provider, and Stanford Microfinance Bank Limited with stakes in several other companies in agricultural sector, real estate, construction with over five hundred employees.
Akwa Ibom North-West senatorial district in Akwa Ibom State covers 10 local government areas which comprise Abak, Essien, Etim Ekpo, Ika, Ikono, Ikot Ekpene, Ini, Obot, Oruk Anam and Ukanafun. This district has 108 Registration Areas (RAs) and 1124 polling units and location centre is located in the Ikot Ekpene INEC office. Godswill Akpabio of the All People's Congress, APC is the current representative of Akwa Ibom North-West.
