The Imo State University (IMSU) in Owerri, Imo State, Nigeria was established in 1981 through law No. 4 passed by the Imo State House of Assembly. [1] The university admitted the first intake of 392 pioneer students on 23 October 1981. [2]

After the creation of Abia State in 1991, the Uturu campus of the university became the Abia State University. [3]

Imo State University is a fully functional university. Most of the programs of the university have obtained full accreditation from National Universities Commission (NUC) of Nigeria. [4] [5]

The result of the 1999/2000 accreditation exercise of the National Universities Commission (NUC) confirmed the high rate and acceptance of the university by the Nigerian public. The university was ranked first among all state universities in Nigeria and the 10th overall among both state and federal universities. [6] Imo state indigenes in Imo State University were granted free education during the tenure of the then Governor Rochas Okorocha but the programme stopped in 2016. This was announced by the Acting Vice Chancellor of IMSU, Professor Adaobi Obasi through the Registrar, Professor Emeka Ejinkonye, who stated that the students of Imo origin would henceforth pay a token for certain services in the school. [7]

Imo State University at Owerri was temporary accommodated within the campus of Alvan Ikoku Federal College of Education from May to December 1992. [8] The university later moved to its own premises of four building within the Federal University of Technology Owerri, at the Lake Nwaebere Campus. At the translocation of the Federal University to the permanent site, Ihiagwa near Owerri, the Lake Nwaebere Campus of that university was then acquired for Imo State University. The first batch of students was allocated to the Imo State University by JAMB in February 1993. The National Universities Commission also formally approved the re-establishment of the university in 1992 at the Lake Nwaebere Campus. [8] Today, Imo State University has many Faculties and Departments that graduate students every year. The university produces First Class, Second Class and Third Class graduates. These students are absorbed into the labour force after going through one your National Youth Service Corps (NYSC). The best graduated students are usually given award and automatic employment in the university. [9]

Consequently, the government of Chief Evan Enwerem, in April 1991 did not waste time in filling the vacuum by re-establishing the university in Owerri. Two options were considered by the government in the re-establishment of Imo State University at Owerri. The first option was to move at once, all staff and students at the various stages of their programmes in Uturu who want to remain in Imo State University, now in Owerri. The second option was to rebuild the University at Owerri over specified period of time. The second option was adopted after various constitutions by government then, and a target period of five years within which to complete re-establishment of the University at Owerri was considered. Professor T. O. C. Ndubizu, Deputy Vice-Chancellor, University of Nigeria, Nsukka was then appointed the Vice-Chancellor with the responsibility of relocating and re-establishing Imo State University. [10]

IMSU operates a faculty system and has 15 faculties. [11] The faculties are headed by Deans and Faculty Officers. The Faculties have different departments under them. The Departments are headed by the Heads of Departments (HODs) who are under the Dean of the Faculties. The lecturers, the Heads of Departments, and the Deans make up the Faculty board. They are all academic members of the university, governed by Academic Staff Union of the University (ASUU). [12] The academic staff is responsible for the curriculum and teaching of the students. They teach, set exams, mark scripts, and supervise projects.

Imo state University also runs Post Graduate (PG) Programme for those who want to build on their First Degree Programme. As of 30 July 2012, Imo State had approval from the National Universities Commission (NUC) to run Post Graduate Studies (PG) for master's degree and PhD [13]

Isuikwuato is a local government area in Abia State in southeastern Nigeria. The name Isu-Ikwu-Ato translates from Igbo as 'three Isu families or lineage' and refers to the three lineages descended from the Isu people, in what is now a local government area. The three brothers are Imenyi who is the eldest, Oguduasaa, his younger brother from the same mother and Isuamawo the second oldest and first from the second wife. These three major clans which also harbour various communities in each of them make up the present day Isuikwuato. It has an estimated population of over 50,000 people. Isuikwuato has natural resources such as iron ore and kaolin. Oil lines flow through Isuikwuato and there have been cases of burst pipe which have had severe effects on the local economy and environment. The major cash crops are palm oil and cassava. The soil at Isuikwuato is loose and suffers from Erosion and this left some dangerous erosion sites in the area. They lack the needed government backing to build drainages around the area to guide the flow of water without further harming the already crying soil. Blessed with hills and highlands, the town will appreciate water infrastructures because water is an important but hard resource to get in Isuikwuato. Isuikwuato is also home to Abia State University Uturu.

Anyim Pius Anyim is a Nigerian politician who served as the 9th president of the Nigerian Senate from 2000 to 2003, he was Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) during Goodluck Jonathan presidency. He was elected Senator on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 1999 for the Ebonyi South constituency of Ebonyi State and was elected president of the Senate in August 2000.

The Delta State University, Abraka - popularly known as DELSU - is a State government-owned university in Nigeria with the main campus located at Abraka, Delta State and its sub-campus at Oleh. The Oleh campus was established with the 1995 Amended Edict. The university is a multiple-campus university having two campuses within a distance of about 52 km apart. Currently, with a student population of about 22,000, the university offers a range of programmes from the full-time certificate, diploma and degree programmes to part-time evening and weekend degree programmes. DELSU offers postgraduate studies up to a doctoral level. DELSU owns a staff/student counselling centre, an e-learning centre, student accommodation and sporting facilities amidst other infrastructures. Ernest Maduabuchi Ojukwu, is a past Deputy Director-General and Head of Campus of the Nigerian Law School, Augustine Nnamani Campus, Agbani Enugu. Before his appointment, he was Associate Professor and Dean Faculty of Law, Abia State University, Uturu from 1995-2001. He is also the President of the Network of University Legal Aid Institutions, the platform through which he has continued to achieve his dreams of promoting clinical legal education and reform of legal education in Nigeria.

Nnenna Ijeoma Elendu Ukeje is a Nigerian politician who was the representative for Bende Federal Constituency, Abia State, Nigeria. Having had a successful career in the private sector, Nnenna was elected to the House of Representatives in 2007, She was re-elected to the position on 29 May 2011 and also served as the Chairman house committee on foreign affairs. In the 2015 general elections she was also re-elected to the house of representative and once again appointed as the house committee chairman on foreign affairs.

Rhema University, Aba (RU) is an accredited private, Christian university based in the city of Aba in Abia State, Nigeria. Founded by the Living Word Ministries International and licensed by the National Universities Commission in 2009 is one of the few private universities in Abia State. The university is currently operating from its take-off campus located at 153/155 Aba-Owerri Road, Aba in Abia State, with plans to develop and migrate its students and faculty to the permanent campus.

The Alvan Ikoku University of Education, Owerri, formerly the Alvan Ikoku Federal College of Education, Owerri is located in Owerri, the capital of Imo State, Nigeria. It was established in April, 1963 as the Advanced Teachers Training College by the defunct Eastern Nigeria Government on the grounds of the Old Shell Camp, Owerri. It has since expanded across the Orlu Road on the banks of the Nworie River. It awards the National Certificate in Education (NCE) and the Professional Diploma in Education (PDE) and, in affiliation, with the University of Nigeria, Nsukka the Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) since 1984. The university is headed by Dr. (Mrs.) Stella Ngozi Lemchi, the Acting Vice-Chancellor (Administration) who was the erstwhile Provost of the college. She took over, in 2022, from Dr. Dan C. Anyanwu. Dr (Mrs.) Lemchi is the second female Provost of the college, after Professor Blessing C. Ijioma.

Uchenna Ikonne was a Nigerian professor of optometry. In December 2015, he became the 7th Substantive Vice-Chancellor of Abia State University. having previously served as the Rector, Abia State Polytechnic, Aba – 2014–2015.

Celestine Onyemobi Elihe Onwuliri was an academician in the field of Parasitology. He served as the 5th Vice Chancellor of the FUTO University. He was also the Acting Vice Chancellor of the University of Jos.

Ebonyi South is one of three senatorial districts in Ebonyi State, Nigeria.

Uche Elendu is a Nigerian actress, singer and entrepreneur. She is described as one of the most consistent faces in the Nigerian movie industry from her debut in 2001 up until 2010 when she took a break from the Nigerian entertainment industry. According to a Vanguard publication, Elendu has featured in over 200 Nigerian movies. she launched her online tv Elialand.
