The Federal University of Petroleum Resources Effurun (FUPRE) in Delta State, Nigeria was established and approved during the Federal Executive Council meeting of 14 March 2007 and admitted its first set of undergraduates in 2008. [1]

The university was established under the Federal Government of Nigeria [2] initiative, to build a specialized university in the Niger Delta to produce middle and higher level manpower and expertise for the oil and gas sector. [3] [4]

The National Universities Commission [5] (NUC) approved sharing of facilities between the Petroleum Training Institute (PTI), Effurun and Federal University of Petroleum Resources Effurun until it moved to its permanent site on development of its main campus at Ugbomro, Uvwie Local Government Area [6] Delta State, in 2010. [7]

FUPRE, Federal University of Petroleum Resources Effurun is the first petroleum university in Africa and sixth in the world. [8] [9]

Library

University Library began on September 6, 2010, with the assumption of duty by a Principal Librarian, Mr. Mathew I. Okoh. The library became operational in October 2011 after the recruitment of staff. At the time the library became open to users, it had the following titles in stock: books- 3000, journals- 85 and an offline database of over 2000 electronic journal articles in Oil and Gas, General sciences, Engineering, ICT and Earth Science. The library serves its constituents Colleges of Science and College of Technology. Also, there is an e-library with functional Internet facilities that provides access to varieties of educational materials. The first University Librarian, Prof. Esharenana E. Adomi, assumed office in May, 2015. [17]

The Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) is a university in Nigeria that was founded as Anambra State University of Technology (ASUTECH) on 30 July 1980, by the Executive Governor of Anambra State, Chief Dr Jim Ifeanyichukwu Nwobodo. The creation of Enugu State out of Anambra State in 1991 by the then Military President General Ibrahim Gbadamasi Babangida, transformed ASUTECH into Enugu State University of Science and Technology.

University of Ilorin, also known as UNILORIN, is a federal government-owned public-research university in Ilorin, Kwara State, Nigeria. The university's main campus sits on an expansive area of land, about 15,000 hectares in the ancient city of Ilorin; making it the largest university in Nigeria and one of the largest in Africa by landmass. The university comprises 17 faculties and over 100 academic departments. It was established by a decree of the Federal Military Government of Nigeria in August, 1975. The establishment aimed to implement one of the educational directives of the Third National Development Plan, which was aimed at providing more opportunities for Nigerians aspiring to acquire university education and to generate high-level manpower, which is vital for the rapidly expanding economy. Effurun is a town and the headquarters of Uvwie Local Government Area in Delta State, Nigeria. It is an Urban center, densely populated with different infrastructural development. it borders its twin city Warri, also serves as an entrance to Warri.

Petroleum Training Institute (P.T.I.) in Effurun, Delta State was established in 1973 by the federal government of Nigeria as a prerequisite for the membership in the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) to train indigenous middle-level manpower to meet the labour force demands of the oil and gas industry in Nigeria and the West African subregion. It awards General Welding Certificates, ND and HND certificates. The P.T.I Act:1972 N0.37 an Act to establish the Petroleum Training Institute to provide courses of instruction training,and research in petroleum technology & to produce technicians and other skilled personnel required to run the petroleum industry.

Western Delta University is located in Oghara, Delta State, Nigeria. It was established in 2007 and is a private university. The National Universities Commission NUC, Nigeria has officially approved Western Delta University WDU.

The Delta State University, Abraka - popularly known as DELSU - is a State government-owned university in Nigeria with the main campus located at Abraka, Delta State and its sub-campus at Oleh.
