Obong University is a private university located in Obong Ntak, Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. It is associated with the Churches of Christ, and its sponsoring congregation is the Rivergate Church of Christ in Madison, Tennessee. [1]
Founded in 1997 as African College of Management, the following year gave rise to the University of Africa , as Obong University was formerly known. The university is in close fellowship with Obong Christian School (founded 1986), which is sponsored by the congregation of Christians at Mt. Morris, Michigan. The Christian school, also in Obong Ntak, has educated thousands of young people across Nigeria and surrounding countries. [2]
The schools are under the direction of Dr. Moses Akpanudo, [3] who, with the help of his Nigerian countrymen and American friends, worked to gain university status for Obong. This elevation was achieved on May 2, 2007. [4]
The University houses a Faculty of Natural and Applied Sciences with degrees available in Computer Science, Microbiology, and Biochemistry. In the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, the University offers degree programmes in English Studies and Religious Studies. It also houses a Faculty of Management and Social Sciences, with degrees in Economics, Accounting, Business Administration, Mass Communication, Marketing, Sociology, Peace Studies and Conflict Resolution, Public Administration, International Relations and Political Science. In addition to the grade school, there is a more recently completed hospital facility on the university's campus.
Akwa Ibom State is a state in the South-South geopolitical zone of Nigeria. It borders Cross River State to the east, Rivers State and Abia State to the west and north-west, and to the south by the Atlantic Ocean. The state takes its name from the Qua Iboe River which bisects the state before flowing into the Bight of Bonny. Abak was the economic hub of the former Southeastern Nigeria before the civil war. The Nigerian Army barrack that is popularly known as Ibagwa Barrack is located or can be found in the Abak. Ntak Ibesit is a densely populated rural town in Akwa Ibom State of Nigeria. The town was noted for production and trade in palm oil and kernel. In recognition of its strategic importance, the Colonial administration established a river port at Ekpene Okpo, with a colonial court. The court is still in operation today. One of the distinguishing features of Ntak Ibesitt is the network of colonial roads. There is a road linking Ikot Okoro, Mbon Ebre, Ukpom and Ekparakwa- all neighbouring towns and villages. The University was formerly known as the Cross River University of Technology (CRUTECH). It was renamed in February of 2021 by a bill passed at Cross River State House of Assembly which was then approved by the former Governor of the State, Benedict Ayade. The change of the tertiary institution's name was to enable the varsity function as a conventional University, which provides the opportunity to offer more professional courses rather focusing on tech-related courses.
