Yusuf Maitama Sule University Kano is a Nigerian public university owned by the Kano State Government. It has two campuses: City Campus located in Kano, and the main campus located along General Buhari Way Kofar Ruwa Kano. In 2017, the university was renamed Yusuf Maitama Sule University as a tribute to Maitama Sule, the influential 20th-century Kano politician. [1]

History


Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso set up a technical committee to establish the second Public University [2] in Kano State, after the Kano University of Science and Technology. The committee included Hafiz Abubakar, Muhammad Yahuza Bello, Fatima Batul Mukhtar, Bayero University Kano and Umar Garba. The committee submitted their report to Kwankwaso, who submitted it to the Kano State House of Assembly for their approval. After they passed the bill, the National Universities Commission was contacted for final approval.

Kwankwaso immediately inaugurated an Implementation Committee, which was headed by Professor Hafiz Abubakar. Their task included the appointment of both academic and non-academic staff, and the admission of the original students. [3]

Library

The library was established in 2012, it has now grown in size and services to its present state, the library is a department of the university headed by a university librarian. The library provides resources to support learning, teaching, and research to its community. [4] The library provides access to online and offline resources through academic database.

Mohammed Rabi'u Musa Kwankwaso, FNSE FNIQS is a Nigerian politician who served as governor of Kano state from 1999 to 2003 and from 2011 to 2015. After he lost his re-election in 2003, he was appointed the first Minister of Defence of the Fourth Republic with no prior military background from 2003 to 2007, under the administration of President Olusegun Obasanjo. He was later elected to the Senate in 2015, serving one term under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) representing Kano Central Senatorial District.

Bello Maitama Yusuf GCON Sardaunan Dutse was a Nigerian politician and businessman. He became Minister for Internal Affairs in 1979, and Minister for Commerce in 1982, and Senator repressing Jigawa central 3 times. Prior, to joining politics, he founded Quartz Integrated Services Nigeria Limited right after he had finished university, it was a renowned and very influential construction company which had first started operating in Kano. Furthermore, he was also the chairman on the board of four other construction companies at the time, thus, making him one of the youngest multi millionaires in Northern Nigeria at the time. In addition to this, he was a lawyer and had served as a chief registrar at the Chief Magistrate's Court in Kano. He was also a member of the Constituent Assembly and, up to his time, one of Jigawa's few billionaires. Bello Maitama set up the stage for all politicians and businessmen in Nigeria.

Yusuf Maitama Sule was a Nigerian politician, diplomat, and elderly statesman who held the danmasanin Kano a chieftaincy title. In 1955-1956 he was the chief whip of the Federal House of Representatives. In 1960 he led the Nigerian delegation to the Conference of Independent African States. In 1976, he became the Federal Commissioner of public complaints, a position that made him the nation's pioneer ombudsman. In early 1979, he was the presidential candidate of the National Party of Nigeria but lost to Shehu Shagari. He was appointed Nigeria's representative to the United Nations after the coming of civilian rule in September 1979. While there he was chairman of the United Nations Special Committee against Apartheid.

Bello Hayatu Gwarzo is a Nigerian politician who was a member of the Nigerian Senate from 1999 to 2015. He was the Senate Chief Whip from 2011 to 2015.

Aliyu Sabo Bakin Zuwo was a Nigerian politician of the People's Redemption Party (PRP). He was a Senator in the Second Nigerian Republic and was elected governor of Kano State in October 1983, holding office briefly until the military coup on 31 December 1983 that brought General Mohammadu Buhari to power.
