Da Jacob Gyang Buba CFR (born October 10, 1951) is a retired Nigeria customs officer and elder statesman. He served as the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service from 2004 to 2008. On April 1, 2009, he was sworn in as the Gbong Gwom, the paramount traditional ruler of the Berom Kingdom, becoming the 5th Gbong Gwom after the demise of Da Victor Dung Pam. [1] [2] He is the Chairman, Jos Traditional Council of Chiefs and president of the Plateau State Traditional Council. [3] [4] He currently serves as the 3rd Chancellor of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University since March 2016 at the 10th convocation of the institution. [5] [6]

Background

Gyang Buba was born on October 10, 1951, in Madu Village of Du District, Jos South, Plateau State. He is the first son of Buba Dung Bot of the Lo Du, Lo-Wet family and Ngo Kaneng Buba, one among the ruling house of the kingdom. He began his early education at SUM elementary school Chwelnyap from 1960 to 1963 then went to Baptist Day School Jos to complete his elementary studies. After finishing, He attended from 1966 to 1971, and graduated from the Provincial Secondary School, Kuru now known as Government Secondary School Kuru and afterwards attended the Institute of Administration in Ahmadu Bello University and graduated with a Diploma in Banking in 1975. Career

He started work as a clerk at the Federal Pay Office in 1972 to 1974 before attending the Institute of Administration and enrolled in the Nigeria Customs Service in 1975 as the assistant preventive officer. He became CG in 2004 and together was the chairman of the African Union Sub-committee of directors general of Customs during the 2007 to 2008, the last post held was the deputy CG of customs at the Abuja's headquarter. [8] As the CG of customs, he implemented the adaptation of the Common External Tariffs for ECOWAS and operations of scanners in borders, areas of airports and port, he amends the holistic review of the Customs and Excise Management Act 1958 and various customs notice. Gyang attends various Trades conferences of which amongst includes the INTERPOL seminars. [9] He is an ordained member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church, and has been awarded the national honors of Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON) and the Officer of the Federal Republic (OFR), he was also a member in the 2014 National Conference. Awards

In October 2022, a Nigerian national honor of Commander Of The Order Of The Federal Republic (CFR) was conferred on him by President Muhammadu Buhari. [10]

Jos is a city in the North-Central region of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. The city has a population of about 900,000 residents based on the 2006 census. Popularly called "J-Town", it is the administrative capital and largest city of Plateau State. Statistics also have it that a large number of the population of Plateau State is made up of Berom people.

Kuru is located on the Jos Plateau in north-central Nigeria commonly referred as the middle belt region of Nigeria. Located about 20 km to Jos on the Jos-Abuja highway in Plateau State. Kuru is a conglomerate of other small semi - developed villages, hamlets and households not too far from one another. The occupants are the Berom's Wurom.

Jeremiah Timbut Useni is a retired Nigerian army lieutenant general, who served as minister responsible for the administration of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja under the Sani Abacha military junta. He served Nigeria in various capacities such as Minister for Transport and Quarter-Master General of the Nigeria Army. Useni also served as Deputy Chairman of one of the significant parties in Nigeria, the All Nigeria Peoples Party. He was elected Senator for the Plateau South constituency of Plateau State, Nigeria in the March 2015 national elections. Useni was running on the People's Democratic Party (PDP) platform.

Philip Waki is a retired Kenyan judge. He is best known for heading the 2008 Commission of Inquiry into Post-Election Violence, also known as the Waki Commission. He retired from the Court of Appeal in October 2019. He is also the cousin to Lawyer Mutula Kilonzo the personal lawyer to Kenya's Second President Daniel Arap Moi.

Gyang Dalyop Dantong was a Nigerian senator who represented the People's Democratic Party (PDP) in Plateau State. He became a member of the Nigerian Senate in 2007. On 12 April 2003, he was elected to the 5th House of Representatives on the platform of the ANPP defeating his closest rival James Vwi of the PDP. He represented Barkin Ladi/Riyom Federal Constituency from 2003 to 2007. Dantong died on 8 July 2012 while attending a mass funeral of people who had been killed by Fulani herdsmen in Maase area of Riyom local government in Plateau State. The people at the funeral were attacked by gunmen thought to also be Fulani.

Riyom is a Local Government Area in Plateau State, Nigeria. It was carved out out of the old Barkin Ladi Local Government Area on 1 October 1996 by the government of General Sani Abacha. It is headquartered in the town of Riyom to the north of the area at 9°38′00″N8°46′00″E.

Air Commodore Jonah David Jang (Rtd) CON (born 13 March 1944) is a Nigerian statesman who was the Governor of Plateau State from 2007 to 2015. He had previously served as Military Governor of Benue State and Gongola State. He ran successfully for re-election on 26 April 2011. In 2015, Jang ran and won Plateau North Senate District seat as his term as Governor of Plateau State drew to a close. In 2018 Jang declared his senate seat vacant and said it was time for the people of Plateau North to decide who would represent them at the red chamber. Jang was at the time making a nocturnal political consultations to run for the presidential ticket of the main opposition, PDP for the 2019 presidential election.

Bashir Salihi Magashi is a retired Nigerian Army major general who served as the defence minister of Nigeria from 2019 to 2023. He served as governor of Sokoto State from August 1990 to January 1992 during the military regime of General Ibrahim Babangida, and as commandant of the Nigerian Defence Academy from 1998 to 1999.

The 2010 Jos riots were clashes between Muslim and Christian ethnic groups in central Nigeria in and near the city of Jos. The first spate of violence of 2010 started on 17 January in Jos and spread to surrounding communities. Houses, churches, mosques and vehicles were set ablaze, during at least four days of fighting. At least 326 people, and possibly more than a thousand, were killed.

Berom or Birom is the most widely spoken Plateau language in Nigeria. The language is locally numerically important and is consistently spoken by Berom of all ages in rural areas. However, the Berom are shifting to Hausa in cities. The small Cen and Nincut dialects may be separate languages. Approximately 1 million (2010) people speak in this language.

Gyang Nyam Shom Pwajok was a Nigerian politician and a member of the People's Democratic Party (PDP). Pwajok was the youngest national Senator during the upper chamber's 7th Assembly, which was in session from 2011 to 2015. He was the 2015 PDP candidate for Governor of Plateau State, but narrowly lost the Plateau gubernatorial election to Simon Lalong of the All Progressives Congress on April 11, 2015.

Simon Bako Lalong is a Nigerian lawyer and politician, who is the current minister of labour and employment. He served as governor of Plateau State from 2015 to 2023.

Hamman Bello Ahmed, OFR, was a Nigerian customs officer, philanthropist and politician. He served as the comptroller general (CG) of the Nigeria Customs Service from 2008 to 2009 by Umaru Yar Adua. He was replaced by B. E. Nwadialo; prior to becoming the CG of Customs, he was the Assistant CG of Customs at the Abuja headquarters.

The 2019 Plateau State gubernatorial election in Nigeria occurred on March 9, 2019. Incumbent APC Governor Simon Lalong won re-election for a second term, defeating PDP Jerry Useni and several minor party candidates.

The 2015 Plateau State gubernatorial election occurred on April 11, 2015. APC's Simon Lalong won election for a first term, defeating Gyang Pwajok of the PDP and four minor party candidates. Lalong won in 11 LGAs, receiving 51.83% of the vote, while Pwajok won the remaining six of the 17 LGAs of the state, receiving 47.76% of the total votes, trailing behind Lalong with 44,386 votes margin.

The 2023 Plateau State gubernatorial election will take place on 18 March 2023, to elect the Governor of Plateau State, concurrent with elections to the Plateau State House of Assembly as well as twenty-seven other gubernatorial elections and elections to all other state houses of assembly. The election—which was postponed from its original 11 March date—will be held three weeks after the presidential election and National Assembly elections. Incumbent APC Governor Simon Lalong is term-limited and cannot seek re-election to a third term.

The 2023 Nigerian Senate elections in Plateau State will be held on 25 February 2023, to elect the 3 federal Senators from Plateau State, one from each of the state's three senatorial districts. The elections will coincide with the 2023 presidential election, as well as other elections to the Senate and elections to the House of Representatives; with state elections being held two weeks later. Primaries were held between 4 April and 9 June 2022.
