Zanzibar University is a private university in Zanzibar, Tanzania.^[3] It opened in 1998 as the first university in Zanzibar.^[4]^[5] It is a private university sponsored by the Darul Iman Charitable Association, an Islamic religious organization in Ontario, Canada. The university is situated in Tunguu area, in the Central District, some 12 miles (19 km) from Zanzibar Town. The university campus, with a total area of 170 acres (0.69 km²), is located among quiet countryside surroundings overlooking the Indian Ocean. There is public transport to the university.^[6]

Historical background

In 1994 Aboud Jumbe Mwinyi, a former President of Zanzibar, persuaded The Darul Iman Charitable Association (NGO) representatives, who were stationed in Dar es Salaam, to build a technical college in Zanzibar. The request was accepted; construction began in 1994 and was completed in 1997.

The objective of establishing a technical college was superseded by the objective of establishing a university, on the request of Zanzibar President Salmin Amour Juma, when construction was completed in 1997. The Darul Iman Charitable Association accepted the Zanzibar government request, and Zanzibar University was officially opened in April 1998. Prof. Shamseldin Z. Abdin (Sudanese national) was the first vice-chancellor for the university. He began his tenure with the opening of the university and stayed on until the first class graduated in 2002.

Future programmes

The Zanzibar University was planned to begin modestly with the Faculty of Business Administration. The proliferation of business enterprises and hotel resorts and the gradual expansion of the tourism industry in the country convinced the Darul Iman sponsors to begin with the Faculty of Business Administration, with the view of satisfying the immediate needs of the business community. In 1999 the Faculty of Law and Shariah was established, and in 2002 a Faculty of Arts and Social Science was established. Within the next seven or so years more structures will be erected to accommodate additional faculties, namely: Faculty of Science, Faculty of Engineering and Faculty of Health Sciences. All the faculties will in soon offer bachelor, master's and doctorate degrees.

Accreditation

Zanzibar University received a Certificate of Provision Registration in 1999 and a Certificate of Full Registration on 4 May 2000.

In cooperation with the Euro-African Management Research Centre (E-AMARC) based in Maastricht, The Netherlands, Zanzibar University has established a centre for Small Business Development.

The Open University of Sri Lanka is a national university in Sri Lanka. It is unique within the Sri Lankan national university system for being the only university to offer programs of study leading to certificate, diploma, degrees and postgraduate degrees up to PhD level through the Open and Distance Mode of Learning (ODL). The degrees awarded by the university are treated as equivalent to degrees awarded by any other Sri Lankan University under the preview of the University Grants Commission.

The University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM) is a public university located in Ubungo District, Dar es Salaam Region, Tanzania. It was established in 1961 as an affiliate college of the University of London. The university became an affiliate of the University of East Africa (UEA) in 1963, shortly after Tanzania gained its independence from the United Kingdom. In 1970, UEA split into three independent universities: Makerere University in Uganda, the University of Nairobi in Kenya, and the University of Dar es Salaam in Tanzania.

The University of Zululand or UniZulu is a comprehensive tertiary educational institution north of the uThukela River in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. The university has established partnerships with schools in the United States and Europe such as the University of Mississippi, Radford University, Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University and Chicago State University. UniZulu was founded with the help of the Prince of Phindangene, Mangosuthu Buthelezi, who was also chancellor of the institution when it was established.

The Democratic Party (DP) is a political party in Tanzania. The party was registered on 7 June 2002. The DP is led by Rev. Christopher Mtikila, who is the Reverend of the Full Salvation Church. The DP calls for the dissolution of the Union Government of Tanzania and has openly campaigned for the separation from mainland of the islands of Zanzibar and Pemba from Tanganyika. The DP supports the expulsion of minorities from the mainland.

The Pentecost University is a private university located at Sowutuom in the Greater Accra Region of Ghana. It was founded by The Church of Pentecost (COP) and evolved from The Pentecost Bible College which initially trained only Lay Leaders and full-time Ministers for the COP. On May 22, 2003, J. A. Darul Ihsan University or DIU was a private university in Dhaka, Bangladesh. It was founded by late Syed Ali Ashraf in 1989. The government of Bangladesh accredited it as a private university in 1993. The Education Ministry shut down the university on 26 July 2016 for illegally operating numerous branch campuses and for selling higher degree certificates.

St. Augustine University of Tanzania (SAUT) is a private university in Mwanza, Tanzania. It was founded by the Catholic Bishops of Tanzania in 1998 as a secular, nonprofit, private institution. Before 1998, SAUT was called first Nyegezi Social Training Centre and then Nyegezi Social Training Institute. SAUT has over 10,000 students with an anticipated minimal rise each new academic year. The university attracts students from Tanzania and elsewhere, particularly Kenya, Uganda, Sudan, Ethiopia, Burundi, Malawi, Zambia, and recently Germany and other foreign nations. SAUT admits students of all nationalities and religious affiliations.

Mwalimu Nyerere Memorial Academy (MNMA) is an undergraduate university dating back to the dawn of Tanzania's independence in 1961. It is located in Kigamboni District of Dar es Salaam Region, Tanzania. It took over the assets and functions of the former Kivukoni Academy of Social Sciences.

The Open University of Tanzania (OUT) (Swahili: Chuo Kikuu Huria cha Tanzania) is a distance learning public university in Tanzania and the largest by the number of students. It was established by an Act of Parliament No. 17 of 1992. It is a single mode institution offering certificate, diploma and degree courses through distance learning. Its headquarters is situated in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, and conducts its operations through 30 Regional Centres and 70 Study Centres. The university has a capacity of approximately 70,000 students both local and international ones.

The International Medical and Technological University (IMTU) is a private university located in Kawe ward of Kinondoni District in Dar es Salaam Region, Tanzania

Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology or MMUST, formerly Western University College of Science and Technology, is a non-profit public university in Kenya. The university is named after Masinde Muliro, a Kenyan politician who helped found the institution. It has approximately 25,000 students across its branches: Main Campus and its two satellite campuses, Webuye Campus and Bungoma Campus

The International University of Africa is a private university in Khartoum, Sudan. It is a member of the Federation of the Universities of the Islamic World. The university has faculties of Education and Humanities, Shariah and Islamic Studies, of Pure and Applied Sciences, Engineering and Medicine.

Abdulrahman Al-Sumait University (SUMAIT University), formerly the University College of Education Zanzibar (UCEZ), was established in Tanzania in 1998 by the Africa Muslims Agency (AMA). Dr. Abdulrahman Hamoud Al-Sumait (1947–2013), for whom the university is named, was a founding member of the AMA. The university's main campus is located at Chukwani.

Kampala International University in Tanzania (KIUT) is a private university located in Gongolamboto ward of Ilala District in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
