Port Harcourt is the capital and largest city of Rivers State in Nigeria. It is the fifth most populous city in Nigeria after Lagos, Kano, Ibadan and Benin. It lies along the Bonny River and is located in the oil rich Niger Delta region. As of 2023, Port Harcourt's urban population is approximately 3,480,000. The population of the metropolitan area of Port Harcourt is almost twice its urban area population with a 2015 United Nations estimate of 2,344,000. In 1950, the population of Port Harcourt was 59,752. Port Harcourt has grown by 150,844 since 2015, which represents a 4.99% annual change.
Owerri is the capital city of Imo State in Nigeria, set in the heart of Igboland. It is also the state's largest city, followed by Orlu, Okigwe and Ohaji/Egbema. Owerri consists of three Local Government Areas including Owerri Municipal, Owerri North and Owerri West, it has an estimated population of 1,401,873 as of 2016 and is approximately 100 square kilometres (40 sq mi) in area. Owerri is bordered by the Otamiri River to the east and the Nworie River to the south. The Owerri Slogan is Heartland. It is also called the Las Vegas of Africa, due to the night life of the city and the numerous hotels, casino and leisure parks all over the city.
Rumuokoro is a town in Obio-Akpor, Rivers State, Nigeria. It is the meeting point of five major roads in Nigerian economy and the gateway to and from the city of Port Harcourt. The word, 'Rumuo' in Rumuokoro was believed to be coined by the Ikwere ethnic group of Rivers State.
The University of Port Harcourt is a public research university located in Aluu and Choba, Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Nigeria. It was established in 1975 as University College, Port Harcourt and was given university status in 1977. The University of Port Harcourt was ranked the sixth in Africa and the first in Nigeria by Times Higher Education in 2015. In July 2021, Owunari Georgewill was appointed substantive Vice-Chancellor of the university.
The Port Harcourt Book Festival is an annual literary event in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Nigeria, organised by the Rainbow Book Club and endorsed by the Rivers State Government since 2008. The Garden City Literary Festival, which is currently known as the Port Harcourt Book Festival was founded by Governor Amaechi of Rivers State, Hundreds of literary fans flock to the Garden City every year for this six-day event, which includes a book fair, writers' workshops, and a variety of other activities. In the past the Festival has been attended by recognized authors and has hosted a number of celebrities.
Port Harcourt Zoo is a state owned zoological park in Port Harcourt city of Rivers State in Nigeria. The zoo was established in 1974 by military governor Alfred Diete-Spiff and was officially opened to the public on 1 October 1975.
Kelsey Harrison Hospital is a State owned hospital in Port Harcourt, the capital city of Rivers State. It was originally called New Niger Hospital and retained that name until 2009 when it was revamped and renamed after Kelsey Harrison, an internationally renowned professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology. The facility officially opened to public in January 2013.
The New Government Reserved Area is an upper middle class mixed-use neighborhood of Port Harcourt, the capital and largest city in Rivers State.
Borokiri is a neighborhood of the city of Port Harcourt situated just south of Old GRA in Rivers State, Nigeria. It lies at latitude 4.749° N and longitude 7.035° E. The neighborhood is bounded by Ahoada Street to the north, Okrika Island to the east, Orubiri oilfield to the south and Ship Builders Road to the west. Its land uses include residential, commercial, institutional and recreation.
Port Harcourt Cemetery is a city-owned and operated public cemetery located along Aggrey Road in the Old Township district of Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital. It is the oldest cemetery still in use in the city and is notable as the burial site of activist Ken Saro-Wiwa and his associates the Ogoni Nine. It also contains one commonwealth burial of soldiers of World War II.
Rivers State University Teaching Hospital formerly known as Braithwaite Memorial Specialist Hospital is a government owned hospital, named after Eldred Curwen Braithwaite, a British doctor and a pioneer of surgery. It is located in Old GRA, Rivers State a neighbourhood of Port Harcourt and is operated by Rivers State Hospital Management Board. It was established in March 1925 as Braithwaite Memorial Hospital and originally served as a medical facility for senior civil servants. It later became a General Hospital and has since gained status as a "Specialist Health Institution". In 2018, it was renamed to serve as a Teaching Hospital for the state owned university following the establishment of college of medical sciences.
Ipalibo Gogo Banigo in Obuama, Degema, Rivers State. She is a Nigerian medical doctor and politician who is the current senator representing Rivers West Senatorial District since 2023. She served as the first female deputy governor of Rivers State from 2015 to 2023.
Greater Port Harcourt is a metropolitan area currently under construction in Rivers State, Nigeria. It comprises the local government areas of Port Harcourt, Oyigbo, Okrika, Ogu–Bolo, Obio-Akpor, Ikwerre, Etche and Eleme. It covers an area of approximately 1,900 km² (734 mi²) and as of 2009 had a population of 2 million people making it one of the largest metropolitan areas in Nigeria.
