List of academic libraries in Nigeria

Last updated

The development of academic libraries in Nigeria can be traced back to pre-independence period when the University of Ibadan and its library were established in 1948. [1] Academic libraries are set up to support learning, teaching and research in tertiary institutions. They also feature prominently in curriculum development of the various departments of their parent institutions. [2] Academic libraries can be categorised mainly as: university, polytechnics, colleges of education and school of nursing libraries. [3]

In Nigeria, there are 43 libraries established in federal universities, 48 libraries founded in state owned universities and 79 libraries founded in private universities. [3]

Polytechnic libraries

Polytechnic libraries are established with the primary goal of providing information resources to students, members of staff of the polytechnic community and other intended users. Apart from the information materials, personal assistance is offered to library users to ensure optimal use of the library. There are 29 Federal Polytechnic Libraries in 29 Federal Polytechnics in Nigeria, [7] 48 State owned polytechnic libraries [8] and 57 privately owned polytechnic libraries in Nigeria. [9]

<span class="mw-page-title-main">National Library of Nigeria</span> Apex library of Nigeria

The National Library of Nigeria came into operation in the mid-1960s with the enactment of the National Library Act of 1964 which was later replaced by Act No. 29 of 1970. Prior to the passage of the National Library act, a series of educational conferences conducted in Ibadan served as the intellectual basis for the creation of a network of libraries funded by the federal government to provide accessibility of educational materials to Nigerians. A government advisory committee was later created in respect to the necessity to develop a local repository of knowledge. The committee was charged with finding a way to aid the government in bringing to prominence the intellectual foundations of its policies, creation of a national bibliographic center and to provide an arena for the promotion of knowledge. The committee was the first major formal body that called for a National Library as part of its recommendations. The government accepted the demands of the advisory committee and undertook the necessary steps to build a National Library.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Yaba College of Technology</span> College in Lagos, Nigeria

Yaba College of Technology, popularly known as YABATECH, was founded in 1947, and is Nigeria's first higher educational institution. It is located in Yaba, Lagos. As of 2008, it had a student enrollment of over 16,000. It also has a secondary school and a staff primary school.

Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic is a tertiary learning institution in Ikot Osurua, Ikot Ekpene, Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. It was founded in 1991. The institution is accredited by the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) with the mandate to provide access to education in technology and commerce. it offers both OND and HND certificates to students on graduation.

Kaduna Polytechnic is one of the earliest polytechnics in Nigeria, located at Tudun Wada area of Kaduna South local government of Kaduna state, North-Western Nigeria. It was established in 1956 as Kaduna Technical Institute after the British Government accepted the upgrading of Yaba Higher College to a technical institute and also proposed the establishment of technical institutes in Kaduna and Enugu through the recommendation of the Higher Education Commission. The polytechnic offers National Diploma and Higher National Diploma courses at the undergraduate level. In 2019/2020 academic session the institute will start awarding National Diploma in Railway Engineering Technology as approved by NBTE on 30 January 2020. The board of Governors of Kaduna Polytechnic was set up in 1991, with representative of eleven state governments, universities, rectors. The board is responsible for the supervision and control of the school. They are called the Governing Council.
