Kashim Ibrahim Library is one of Africa's biggest academic libraries located on the main campus of Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria, Nigeria. It is one of the Nigerian First generation libraries commonly referred to as K.I.L. by the Abusites. [1]

The library is one of the oldest academic research centers in Nigeria in terms of good facilities, stable internet connection, and access to an E-library. The university librarian is Professor Doris Bozimo. [2]

History

The Library was established in 1955 for the Nigerian College of Arts, Science and Technology, Zaria Branch with a bigger complex built in 1963 The present library building was formally opened on the 10th of December 1976, by Alhaji Sir Kashim Ibrahim, after whom it is named. The Library was built on an area of 13,000 square metres which contain 500,00 volumes of book and 6,350 periodical titles. The University library has always been at the center of research and scholarship playing a major role in acquiring, processing, and lending library materials and responding to patrons' inquiries with over 2000 readers capacity at a time. [3] The library management during time were Khalil Mahmud as the University Librarian and Sam E. Ifidon was appointed as the Deputy University Librarian. few years has been striving to upgrade the IT skills of the staff to enable them to cope with the challenges of the information age. Recently, thanks mostly to donations by the MacArthur Foundation and the Carnegie Corporation, rapid progress has been made not only in updating the collection but also in automating the resources and services of the Library system.

Today, online and CD-ROM searches are a common feature among staff and students of the University. With a staff strength of 42 professionals and 109 para-professionals, 22 Senior and 102 Junior non-professional staff in the entire university library system, the library management is striving to upgrade the IT skills of the staff to enable them to cope with the challenges of the information age. Structure of the Kashim Ibrahim Library Complex

The structure of the main library is a three-storey building located on the main campus, Samaru. The building comprises dozens of offices, departments, sections, and units. These house the various administrative, financial, technical, and other staff, as well as resource repositories and others. It is made up of different departments and offices. The library has specialized divisions like a serial section, Reference section, CD-ROMS Search Room, Media division, Reserved Books Unit, and Casual Reading parlor. [5] The Complex also has under it several special satellite libraries or branches found in various sections of the University, in the Main Campus, Kongo Campus, Teaching Hospital, and other Centers and Divisions of the University, including those outside Zaria, like the SBRS Funtua, [5] [6] Arewa House, Kaduna. [7]

Lastly, the Complex also has departmental and faculty satellite libraries in almost every department and faculty in all the Campuses and sub-divisions of the University. These are also generally set up in such a way as to reflect the needs of the specific departmental staff and students, based on the fields of study found there. [4]

Collections

The Library has total holdings of over 1.2 million volumes of books and 66,000 periodical titles, with collections for arts and social sciences located on the first floor, while those for physical sciences, medicine, and engineering are found on the second floor. Ivara Ejemot Esu OFR, is a Nigerian politician, academic administrator and professor and is the former Deputy Governor of Cross River State. He hails from Agwagune in Biase Local Government Area of Cross River State, Nigeria. He holds the Nigerian National Honours Award in the rank of Officer of the Order of the Federal Republic (OFR) conferred on him by President Obasanjo in 2005 and the Cross River State Honours Merit Award conferred on him by Governor Donald Duke in 2004 for carrying out excellent management reforms at the University of Calabar. Federal College of Education, Zaria is a College of Science and Art based in Zaria, Nigeria. It was established by the then Northern Region Government of Nigeria in November 1962. It was initially named Northern Secondary Teachers College and later known as Advanced Teachers' College Zaria, under the administrative and policy control of Ahmadu Bello University Zaria, until 1991. The institution was initially located at the present site of Nuhu Bamalli Polytechnic (Annex) before it was moved to Gyallesu, opposite Ahmadu Bello University, Kongo Campus - Zaria in 1973. It was later disarticulated from ABU, Zaria and renamed Federal College of Education, Zaria. In May 2015, it was converted to a University of Education, together with some other Colleges in the Country, by the PDP government. Later in August same year, the APC Government reversed the conversion to its former status as Federal College of Education, Zaria, including all the others.

Professor Samuel Ehimigbai Ifidon is a Nigerian retired librarian. He holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Classics from the University of London; postgraduate diploma, from the University of Ibadan, Masters of Library and Information Science, University of Western Ontario, Canada; Doctorate Degree from the University of Ibadan. A Chartered Librarian, Fellow of the Nigerian Library Association and member of Nigerian Institute of Management. He has published 7 books, 8 chapters in books, and over 50 articles in national and international journals.

The Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) is a public research university located in Zaria, Kaduna State, Nigeria. It was opened in 1962 as the University of Northern Nigeria. The university has four colleges, three schools, 18 faculties, 110 academic departments, 17 centres, and seven institutes with over 600 professors, about 3000 academic staff and over 7000 non-teaching staff. The university has over 400 postgraduate programmes reflecting its strife to become a postgraduate studies-centred university. The university operates from two campuses in the ancient cosmopolitan city of Zaria, the Samaru Campus where the Senate Building and most of the faculties are located and the Kongo Campus, hosting the faculties of Law and Administration. It has been adjudged to be the largest university in Sub-Saharan Africa, in terms of land occupied, owing to the numerous buildings it has.

Samaru is a town and ward in Sabon Gari Local Government of Kaduna state, Nigeria. The town is a semi-urban area in which the Ahmadu Bello University main campus is located. Samaru is one of the most popular towns in Zaria with different ethnic groups living together in peace and harmony. Samaru is home for all tribe.

Abdullahi Mahadi was a historian, educationist, and former Vice-Chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University, Gombe State University, and Gombe State University of Science and Technology.

Florence Diya Aya is a Nigerian Politician and businesswoman. She was born in Garkida in 1948 and is from Garaje Agban, Kagoro, Kaura Local Government Area of Kaduna State. She was a member of the Kaduna State House of Assembly from 1990 to 1993.

Doris Bozimo is a Nigerian librarian, academician and administrator. She is a professor and former university librarian at Kashim Ibrahim Library, Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria, Kaduna state. She was the country coordinator representing Nigeria at Electronic Information for Libraries (EIFL) as well as a member of the Nigerian Library Association.

Shehu Abdul Rahman is a Nigerian professor of Agricultural Economics. He was the pioneer Vice-Chancellor of Federal University Gashua and former Deputy Vice-Chancellor (DVC) (Admin.), Nasarawa State University, Keffi. He is currently the vice - chancellor of Federal University Lafia.
