Football Club Shakhtar Donetsk is a Ukrainian professional football club from the city of Donetsk. In 2014, due to the War in Donbas, the club was forced to move to Lviv, and had played matches in Lviv (2014–2016) and in Kharkiv (2017–2020) whilst having its office headquarters and training facilities in Kyiv. In May 2020, Shakhtar started to play home matches at NSC Olimpiyskyi in Kyiv.
Football Club Dynamo Kyiv is a Ukrainian professional football club based in Kyiv. Founded in 1927 as a Kyivan football team of republican branch of the bigger Soviet Dynamo Sports Society, the club as a separate business entity was officially formed only in 1989 and currently plays in the Ukrainian Premier League, and has never been relegated to a lower division. The club has secured brand rights from the Ukrainian Dynamo society and has no direct relations to the sports society since 1989. Their home is the 70,050 capacity Olimpiyskiy National Sports Complex.
Football Club Arsenal Kyiv is a Ukrainian football club based in Kyiv. In 2019, the club's professional team was dissolved, but its junior teams continue to compete in city competitions. The club claims to be a successor of Kyiv Arsenal factory team which traces its history back to 1925. The original factory team used to compete in the Soviet Class B, but was relegated in 1964 and officially dissolved.
The Ukrainian Premier League or UPL is the highest division of Ukrainian annual football championship. As the Vyshcha Liha it was formed in 1991 as part of the 1992 Ukrainian football championship upon discontinuation of the 1991 Soviet football championship and included the Ukraine-based clubs that competed previously in the Soviet top three tiers competitions as well as better clubs of the Ukrainian republican competitions. The initial season of the league featured six former Soviet Top League clubs among which were Dynamo, Shakhtar, Chornomorets, Dnipro, Metalist, Metalurh as well as four more clubs that previously also competed at the top league.
The Persha Liha or Ukrainian First League is a professional football league in Ukraine and the second tier of national football competitions pyramid. Members of the league also participate in the Ukrainian Cup. It is the highest division of Professional Football League.

FC Dynamo-2 Kyiv was the second football team of the Ukrainian football club Dynamo Kyiv based in Kyiv, Ukraine. The team was first created in 1938, and the club ceased its recent operations again after the 2015–16 season. During the Soviet period, participation of the second squad was sporadic and mostly at republican level, the Football Championship of the Ukrainian SSR.
FC Podillya Khmelnytskyi is a professional Ukrainian football team that is based in Khmelnytskyi, Khmelnytskyi Oblast, Ukraine. The club competes in the Ukrainian Second League.
FC Borysfen Boryspil is a formerly professional Ukrainian football club from Boryspil, Ukraine. The club was created as a phoenix club in 1997 by Ihor Kovalevych after disagreement in FC CSKA Kyiv. The history of the club is controversial and its admission to professional competitions is dubious. In mid 1990s the original team of Zlobenko reached some agreement with the Central Sports Club of the Armed Forces of Ukraine after which there was established a joint team "CSKA-Borysfen" that became the first successful debutant of the Ukrainian Vyshcha Liha finishing among top 5 at the end of season. Following that season the newly created Professional Football League for unknown reason decided to dissolve the joint venture and recognize ownership of the club after company "Kyiv-Donbass" that was associated with the Ministry of Defense.
1992 Vyshcha Liha was the first football championship organized in Ukraine after the dissolution of the Soviet Union and officially recognized by the UEFA. The last Soviet season finished in fall of 1991.

Klasychne derby, or the Ukrainian football rivalry is the football match between the two top Ukrainian clubs Dynamo Kyiv and Shakhtar Donetsk. The game between those two clubs is a focal point of each football season in Ukraine. Due to war, at least three of their scheduled fixtures were scratched in 1941 and 2014. Since 2014, Shakhtar sometimes plays in Kyiv due to the Russian aggression which technically turned the rivalry into a city derby.
The Dynamo Kyiv junior squads and Academy includes several junior teams of FC Dynamo Kyiv youth system. Besides some reserve teams that competed in lower leagues, the club also has junior teams that participate in competitions under-21 and under-19 of the Ukrainian Premier League. In additions to that the club also has its own football academy (school) that exists since 1957.
The "Global Tour for Peace" was a European tour of international club friendlies organised by two Ukrainian football clubs whose football league had to cease due to the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine. The aim of the tour was to raise funds to provide aid for people in Ukraine affected by the Russian invasion. The Ukrainian teams involved with the tour were Dynamo Kyiv and Shakhtar Donetsk, the two most successful teams coming out the Ukrainian Premier League, as well as the Ukraine national football team who played friendlies in preparation for their World Cup qualification games in June 2022.
