Farah Bhatti OBE FRCS FLSW is a British cardiac surgeon who is an honorary professor at the Swansea University Medical School. She serves as Chair of the Royal College of Surgeons of England Women in Surgery Forum. She was appointed an Order of the British Empire in 2020 for services to diversity in the National Health Service in Wales.

Early life and education

Bhatti is of Pakistani heritage. She was born in Birmingham and raised in South London. [1] As a young child, she decided that she wanted to be a doctor. She was an undergraduate student at the University of Oxford, where she studied physiological sciences and specialised in heart related topics. [2] She was a member of Somerville College. She completed a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery at the University of Cambridge, where she was first introduced to clinical work and operating theatres. [2] Bhatti spent her elective at The Texas Heart Institute, where she became interested in cardiology. She completed several different placements related to surgery (including in orthopaedics, accident and emergency and general surgery) at the Royal Brompton Hospital and Harefield Hospital. [2] Alongside various surgical jobs, Bhatti researched transplantation at the University of Cambridge and was eventually awarded her Doctor of Medicine. [2] She subsequently worked in the North West Anglia NHS Foundation Trust.[ citation needed ]

Research and career

In 2007 Bhatti became the first British woman of Pakistani origins to be made a cardiac surgeon in the United Kingdom. [2] [3] She was made Honorary Professor of Surgery at the Swansea University Medical School in 2015. [4]

Alongside her clinical work, Bhatti is committed to improving medical education, equity and inclusion in surgery. [5] She serves as Chair of the Royal College of Surgeons of England Women in Surgery Forum, and was the first Muslim woman to be on the council. [1] [6]

Sir Magdi Habib Yacoub, is an Egyptian retired professor of cardiothoracic surgery at Imperial College London, best known for his early work in repairing heart valves with surgeon Donald Ross, adapting the Ross procedure, where the diseased aortic valve is replaced with the person's own pulmonary valve, devising the arterial switch operation (ASO) in transposition of the great arteries, and establishing the heart transplantation centre at Harefield Hospital in 1980 with a heart transplant for Derrick Morris, who at the time of his death was Europe's longest-surviving heart transplant recipient. Yacoub subsequently performed the UK's first combined heart and lung transplant in 1983.

Professor Sir Bruce Edward Keogh, KBE, FMedSci, FRCS, FRCP is a Rhodesian-born British surgeon who specialises in cardiac surgery. He was medical director of the National Health Service in England from 2007 and national medical director of the NHS Commissioning Board from 2013 until his retirement early in 2018. He is chair of Birmingham Women's and Children's NHS Foundation Trust.

Walter Randolph "Ranny" Chitwood, Jr. is known for his work as a cardiothoracic surgeon at the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University located in Greenville, North Carolina.

K.M. Cherian, in full Kotturathu Mammen Cherian, is an Indian heart surgeon. He performed India's first coronary artery bypass surgery and first heart transplant. and is considered a pioneer of pediatric cardiac surgery in the country. He is also a former honorary surgeon to the President of India and a Padma Shri awardee.

Jose Chacko Periappuram is an Indian cardiac surgeon and medical writer who performed the first successful heart transplant in the state of Kerala, India, as well as the first successful heart retransplant in the country. His other achievements include the first beating heart, awake bypass and total arterial revascularization surgeries in the state. Periappuram is a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, the Royal College of Surgeons of Glasgow and the Royal College of Surgeons of London. He is the founder and chairman of "Heart Care Foundation", a charitable trust that financially assists poor heart patients. The Government of India awarded him the Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award, in 2011.

Sir Terence Alexander Hawthorne English is a South African-born British retired cardiac surgeon. He was Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon, Papworth Hospital and Addenbrooke's Hospital, Cambridge, 1973–1995. After starting a career in mining engineering, English switched to medicine and went on to lead the team that performed Britain's first successful heart transplant in August 1979 at Papworth, and soon established it as one of Europe's leading heart–lung transplant programmes.

Nagarur Gopinath was an Indian surgeon and one of the pioneers of cardiothoracic surgery in India. He is credited with the first successful performance of open heart surgery in India which he performed in 1962. He served as the honorary surgeon to two Presidents of India and was a recipient of the fourth highest Indian civilian award of Padma Shri in 1974 and Dr. B. C. Roy Award, the highest Indian medical award in 1978 from the Government of India.

Robert Clayton Robbins, known professionally as Robert C. Robbins or R.C. Robbins, is an American cardiothoracic surgeon and the 22nd and current president of The University of Arizona. Previously, he was the president and CEO of the Texas Medical Center in Houston, Texas, from 2012 to 2017. As an internationally recognized cardiac surgeon, he has focused his clinical efforts on acquired cardiac diseases, including surgical treatment of congestive heart failure and cardiothoracic transplantation. He also serves on the board of the Greater Phoenix Economic Council.

Philip Caves (1940–1978) was an Irish cardiothoracic surgeon. In 1972, while at Stanford University, he pioneered the use of the bioptome and transvenous endomyocardial biopsy in the early diagnosis of heart transplant rejection. It was considered the most significant advance in antirejection therapy of the time. Awarded the British American Research Fellowship in 1971, Caves worked with pioneering cardiothoracic surgeon Norman Shumway at Stanford and became staff surgeon leading the transplant programme by 1973. A year later he went to Edinburgh as a senior lecturer in cardiac surgery, where he became particularly interested in pediatric cardiac surgery.

Jennifer Sue Lawton is an American cardiothoracic surgeon who specializes in adult cardiac surgery. She is the Richard Bennett Darnall Professor of Surgery and chief of the Johns Hopkins Division of Cardiac Surgery.

Dr Manoj Durairajpronunciation  is an Indian heart transplant surgeon, based in Pune. He was awarded "Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice" in November 2021. He has been working as Director, Marian Cardiac Centre and Research Foundation, Pune, India, the firsts heart transplant centre in Pune, and Director of Heart and Lung Transplant Program Sahyadri Hospital, Pune, India.
