Fasih Ur Rehman is a Kathak maestro from Pakistan Kathak, He is the disciple of Maharaj Ghulam Hussain Kathak for 20 years, (1977-1998) in Lahore, Pakistan, and later continued his studies with Kumudini Lakhia in London and Ahmedabad, India. [1] Is the main male Kathak dancer of Pakistan with more than 30 years of experience of the Kathak artform. [2]

First years and background

From a royal Afghan lineage, [2] [3] [4] his mother was closely related to princess Fatima Sultana of Kaboul, sister of King Amanullah Khan of Afghanistan, [3] Fasih is son of the cinematographer Massud-Ur-Rehman, brother of Faisal Rehman and nephew of Bollywood actor Rehman.

Grew up in Lahore, Pakistan. Since he was a child, he was fascinated with dancing. [3] [5] Encouraged by his close family he decided to observe Maharaj Ghulam Hussein's lessons, and then started learning from him. Later, he also started performing on stage under the direction of Maharaj Ghulam. [3]

Career

Started his public appearances starting the 1980s decade for several embassies and numerous private performances. Then he danced under direction of Kumudini Lakhia in Pakistan and England in the 1990s. [1] Once he started to choreograph in Pakistan he found a difficult sociopolitic environment (see Culture of Pakistan) fact he could get over becoming a leading figure in Kathak scene worldwide [3] [5] ). He has participated in events in Italy, U.K., Tunisia, Dubai, U.S., Pakistan, Japan, London, Spain, among others. [1] Worked closely with the Kathak Society TKS) in Karachi during 1998-2001. [1] Continues his professional development teaching regularly in London and other points in Europe and Asia, and performing in diverse international stages [2] [4] [6]

Awards

In 2006 he received Tamgha-e-Imtiaz, Medal of Excellence given by Pakistan State to high achievement for his outstanding career in arts. [1]

Kumudini Lakhia is an Indian Kathak dancer and choreographer based in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, where she founded Kadamb School of Dance and Music, an institute of Indian dance and music in 1967.

Sargam is a Pakistani musical Urdu film directed by Syed Noor starring the singer Adnan Sami and his ex-wife Zeba Bakhtiar.

Asim Raza is a Pakistani film and television commercial director and producer. Nighat Chaudhry is a Kathak classical dancer who was born on 24 February 1959, in Lahore, Pakistan. She moved to London with her parents when she was one year old. She studied ballet and contemporary dance; but when she was 14, she met Nahid Siddiqui, one of the greatest Kathak dancers, and began training with her. Inspired to learn the classical forms of her own culture, she abandoned ballet. In order to understand and absorb the nuances of the Indian style, she wished to be closer to its origins; and she moved back to Pakistan. She eventually became a trained Sufi & Mystique Kathak classical dancer and has been active as a professional Kathak dancer for over three decades.

Farar (transl. Escape) is a Pakistani television film directed by Mehreen Jabbar. It starred Marina Khan, Sania Saeed and Huma Nawab in leading roles. The film first broadcast on Pakistan Television Corporation in 1996, and later on Indus Vision. The film entails the journey of three friends from Karachi as they try to navigate love and their city.
