Fatima Waziri-Azi is a Nigerian lawyer and the Director General of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) of Nigeria[ citation needed ]. Before her appointment at NAPTIP she was an advisor on the rule of law to the President of Nigeria,Muhammadu Buhari. She is a former Head of Department of Public Law at the Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies [1] [2] and she is a woman rights advocate and a campaigner against domestic and sexual based violence. Fatima Waziri-Azi attended the Ahmadu Bello University,Zaria,obtaining a bachelor's degree in Law in 2001. [5] She is an Associate Member of the UK Chartered Institute of Arbitrators;and is a member of the Nigerian Bar Association,the New York County Lawyers Association,the Association of Women in Development and of Women in International Security. From January 2005 to August 2006,Fatima Waziri-Azi worked as an attorney/senior program officer at the Women's Rights,Electoral Issues,and Justice Sector Reform Desk. [7] From February 2016 to November 2018,she worked as a research and program officer at the Presidential Advisory Committee Against Corruption (PACAC). From November 2018,she worked as the Rule of Law Advisor to the President in the Office of the Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. In September 2021,Fatima Waziri-Azi was appointed Director-General of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP). [8]
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is a Nigerian law enforcement agency that investigates financial crimes such as advance fee fraud and money laundering. The EFCC was established in 2003,partially in response to pressure from the Financial Action Task Force on Money Laundering (FATF),which named Nigeria as one of 23 countries non-cooperative in the international community's efforts to fight money laundering. Nigeria is a source,transit,and destination country for women and children subjected to trafficking in persons including forced labour and forced prostitution. The U.S. State Department's Office to Monitor and Combat Trafficking in Persons placed the country in "Tier 2 Watchlist" in 2017. Trafficked people,particularly women and children,are recruited from within and outside the country's borders –for involuntary domestic servitude,sexual exploitation,street hawking,domestic servitude,mining,begging etc. Some are taken from Nigeria to other West and Central African countries,primarily Gabon,Cameroon,Ghana,Chad,Benin,Togo,Niger,Burkina Faso,and the Gambia,for the same purposes. Children from other West African states like Benin,Togo,and Ghana –where Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) rules allow for easy entry –are also forced to work in Nigeria,and some are subjected to hazardous jobs in Nigeria's granite mines. Europe,especially Italy and Russia,the Middle East and North Africa,are prime destinations for forced prostitution. Nigerians accounted for 21% of the 181,000 migrants that arrived in Italy through the Mediterranean in 2016 and about 21,000 Nigerian women and girls have been trafficked to Italy since 2015.
