The Feminist Porn Awards (FPAs) [1] is an annual adult film awards ceremony that began in 2006, and was initially organized by the Good for Her adult store in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. [2] Until 2014, the ceremony was officially known as the Good for Her Feminist Porn Awards. [3]

History

Good For Her founded the Feminist Porn Awards with the intent to celebrate work that complicates dominant representations of desire, desirability, sexuality and gender. [4] The ceremony was originally conceived of and coordinated by former store manager Chanelle Gallant, and it has been organized by current store manager Alison Lee since 2008. [5] [6] [7] Both the store and the ceremony are based in Toronto, Ontario, and the ceremony commonly takes place at Berkeley Church. [7] [8] Despite the name of the ceremony, Lee states that the films featured at the awards (as well as the ceremony itself) are meant to appeal to men as well as women. [6]

Winners at the FPAs are awarded trophies in the shape of butt plugs. [9]

Criteria

According to the official website, [1] nominations for an FPA are dependent upon three criteria:

  1. Women and/or traditionally marginalized people were involved in the direction, production and/or conception of the work.
  2. The work depicts genuine pleasure, agency and desire for all performers, especially women and traditionally marginalized people.
  3. The work expands the boundaries of sexual representation on film, challenges stereotypes and presents a vision that sets the content apart from most mainstream pornography. This may include depicting a diversity of desires, types of people, bodies, sexual practices, and/or an anti-racist or anti-oppression framework throughout the production. [1]

They embrace sexual minority groups, endorsing the value of coalition-building with marginalized groups. Sex-positive feminism is connected with the sex-positive movement. Sex-positive feminism brings together anti-censorship activists, LGBT activists, feminist scholars, producers of pornography and erotica, among others. Sex-positive feminists believe that prostitution can be a positive experience if workers are treated with respect, and agree that sex work should not be criminalized.

Her genre is described as "art-core," meaning the focus is on sexuality from the female perspective, female pleasure, and creative, sensual play. Common themes in her erotic films include safe sex, men seen as sexual objects, female fantasies, and male bisexuality.

Pink and White Productions is an American independent pornographic production company, based in San Francisco, California, that focuses on explicit video web and DVD releases showcasing female and queer sexuality. The company's main director and producer is Shine Louise Houston. Houston began her vision for "Pink and White Productions" after graduating from San Francisco Art Institute with a Bachelors in Fine Art Film; her Crash Pad Series (CrashPadSeries.com), which has won many awards as well as being featured in Curve magazine. Along with her feature in Curve, Houston has also won Curve's Lesbian Sex Culture Curator Award, the Feminist Porn Awards “Visionary, " PorYes Europe's 1st Feminist Porn Awards Honored Filmmaker and International Ms. Leather Keynote Speaker.

PorYes is an initiative of sex-positive feminists that advocates for feminist criteria in pornography and honors outstanding depictions of sexuality. Since 2009, the PorYes Award has been held every two years as a feminist European porn film prize in Berlin. The PorYes awards were created as a feminist counter-action to the Venus Awards, a Berlin-based mainstream porn festival.

Sweetheart Video is a Canadian pornographic film studio based in Montreal, Quebec. The studio was founded by Jonathan Blitt and pornographic actress Nica Noelle in 2008, and it specializes in lesbian-themed films. Noelle initially wrote and directed all the films, but she left the studio in 2011. Subsequent films were initially written and directed by other people in the adult industry, including Melissa Monet, Dana Vespoli, and James Avalon; Vespoli now exclusively writes and directs all the films.

Shine Louise Houston is a filmmaker and the founding director and producer of Pink and White Productions, an independent production company creating queer pornography in San Francisco. Houston makes feature-length pornographic films in addition to producing, directing, and shooting hundreds of installments for her queer porn membership site CrashPadSeries.com. Houston distributes her own work and that of other indie adult filmmakers through PinkLabel.tv, catering to different sexual communities.
