He played for South Korea at the 1980 AFC Asian Cup, 1986 Asian Games, 1988 Summer Olympics and 1988 AFC Asian Cup. He conceded 29 goals in 44 caps and won the 1986 Asian Games. He was also selected as a member of South Korea squad for the 1986 FIFA World Cup, but was pushed by his rival Oh Yun-kyo to the bench, and didn't appear throughout the tournament.

South Korea was the host nation of the 2002 Asian Games held in Busan from September 29 to October 14, 2002.
