The Festering Season is a graphic novel created by Kevin Tinsley with artist Tim Smith 3. It was published as a first-run graphic novel by Stickman Graphics in 2002.
After the owner of an East Village botanicas is killed in a bizarre police shooting, her daughter, Rene Duboise is summoned back to New York from Haiti, interrupting her Vodou training. Upon her return, Rene realizes that she is being watched and that there is something more sinister going on in the city.
At the same time, Paul Whythe, a cultural anthropology professor at New York University is asked to consult with the NYPD’s Cult Related Task Force on dead body unearthed in Brooklyn Heights. He recognizes the ritualized nature of the burial to be related to the religion of Palo, but becomes suspicious of the East Village shooting’s relationship with the similar religion of Vodou.
Rene realizes that a drug smuggler by the name of Gangleos is behind a series of ritualistic crimes, including her mother’s death, after a confrontation with Isabelle Desanto, whose brother had also been murdered after seeking counsel with Rene’s mother. After a meeting with Paul shortly thereafter, Rene is able to piece together a far greater threat being orchestrated against the entire city. However the extent and purpose of which remain a mystery until near the end of the story.
The Festering Season is an extremely polemical story that is particularly critical of the Giuliani administration and highly politicized police procedures that were implemented during his tenure in office. [1] It was described “no light read,” [2] “highly original” and “socially conscious” [3] in reviews and even received an extensive write up in The New York Times . [4]
In the afterword of the graphic novel, Tinsley cites numerous incidents and news reports on police brutality, racial profiling, weakened constitutional rights and Vodou curses that influenced and inspired his story. There are footnotes throughout the afterword that reference numerous Village Voice articles and an article from the New York Post that was emblazoned with a front-page headline that read: Black Magic Woman. Tim Smith’s art is heavily influenced by Japanese Manga, but is reproduced from his original pencils, occasionally appearing rough, and revealing sketchy construction lines. Photographic backgrounds of actual locations are used often throughout the book to varying degrees of success.
The coloring is notable in that utilizes a two-color printing process that was originally used during the early 1900s. Tinsley stated in an interview that The Festering Season was begun using a grayscale palette, but that he felt it was lacking impact. At this time he “remembered an old art history lesson about Norman Rockwell’s” early work on the Saturday Evening Post which was reproduced in two-color. Tinsley has gone on to use this same process on subsequent graphic novels. [6]

Franklin Christenson "Chris" Ware is an American cartoonist known for his Acme Novelty Library series and the graphic novels Jimmy Corrigan, the Smartest Kid on Earth (2000), Building Stories (2012) and Rusty Brown (2019). His works explore themes of social isolation, emotional torment and depression. He tends to use a vivid color palette and realistic, meticulous detail. His lettering and images are often elaborate and sometimes evoke the ragtime era or another early 20th-century American design style.
Daniel Gillespie Clowes is an American cartoonist, graphic novelist, illustrator, and screenwriter. Most of Clowes's work first appeared in Eightball, a solo anthology comic book series. An Eightball issue typically contained several short pieces and a chapter of a longer narrative that was later collected and published as a graphic novel, such as Like a Velvet Glove Cast in Iron (1993), Ghost World (1997), David Boring (2000) and Patience (2016). Clowes's illustrations have appeared in The New Yorker, Newsweek, Vogue, The Village Voice, and elsewhere. With filmmaker Terry Zwigoff, Clowes adapted Ghost World into a 2001 film and another Eightball story into the 2006 film, Art School Confidential. Clowes's comics, graphic novels, and films have received numerous awards, including a Pen Award for Outstanding Work in Graphic Literature, over a dozen Harvey and Eisner Awards, and an Academy Award nomination.
Batman: The Killing Joke is a 1988 DC Comics one-shot graphic novel featuring the characters Batman and the Joker written by Alan Moore and illustrated by Brian Bolland. The Killing Joke provides an origin story for the supervillain the Joker, loosely adapted from the 1951 story arc "The Man Behind the Red Hood!". The Joker's origin is presented via flashback, while simultaneously depicting his attempt to drive Jim Gordon insane and Batman's desperate attempt to stop him.
An eroge is a Japanese genre of erotic video game. In 1982, Japan's Koei, founded by husband-and-wife team Yoichi and Keiko Erikawa, released the first erotic computer game with sexually explicit graphics, Night Life, an early graphic adventure game for the NEC PC-8801. That same year, Koei released another erotic title, Danchi Tsuma no Yuwaku, which was an early role-playing adventure game with colour graphics, owing to the eight-color palette of the NEC PC-8001 computer. It Rhymes with Lust is a "picture novel" published in 1950. It is an early example of a graphic novel. It was written by Arnold Drake and Leslie Waller, with black-and-white art by Matt Baker and inker Ray Osrin. It was published by the comic book and magazine company St. John Publications. Drake would go to write for comics publishers DC and Marvel, for which he created such characters as Doom Patrol, Deadman and the original Guardians of the Galaxy.

Thirteen Reasons Why is a young adult novel written by Jay Asher in 2007, that follows the story of Hannah Baker, a high school freshman, and the thirteen reasons why she commits suicide. Following her death, Hannah leaves behind a series of 7 double-sided cassette detailing the 13 specific people and events that she blames for her demise. Two weeks after her death these cassette tapes are mailed out with directions to pass the tapes on to the next person on the tape. Hannah’s life story is conveyed through these tapes, which are narrated by Hannah herself, and through the point of view of Clay, her classmate and the recipient of the ninth tape. The inspiration behind the main character, Hannah Baker, comes from author Jay Asher’s close relative who attempted suicide.
Twilight: The Graphic Novel is a 2 part comic book miniseries by Young Kim, an adaptation of the first thirteen chapters of the 2005 novel Twilight by Stephenie Meyer. Volume 2 was released on October 11, 2011. On October 2012 Volume 1 and Volume 2 were put into one book for a collectors edition that included extras in the back of the book about 5 of the characters (Carlisle Cullen, Edward Cullen, Bella Swan, Jacob Black, and Esme Cullen. On April 23, 2013 volume one of the New Moon: The Graphic Novel came out.
This One Summer is a graphic novel written by Mariko Tamaki and illustrated by Jillian Tamaki published by First Second Books in 2014. It is a coming of age story about two teenage friends, Rose and Windy, during a summer in Awago, a small beach town. Rose and Windy discover themselves and their sexuality while battling family dynamics and mental disabilities. Mariko Tamaki based the town of Awago on a Canadian cottage her family used to visit. Cousins Mariko and Jillian have worked together on previous novels and aim to have more equality and representation for minorities in their pieces of literature. The graphics in the novel are entirely purple-blue and powerful enough to place the readers in the specific scene. Many literary reviewers find this novel to be extremely impactful and essential for adolescents to read. Due to the content in the novel, This One Summer has also been censored and listed on the American Library Association’s “Top Ten Most Challenged Books” list in 2016 and 2018 for the use of its sexual scenes and mature topics. The novel has also won numerous awards including the distinguished Caldecott Honor in 2015.
