Fig Dish was a 1990s rock band based in Chicago. The band signed to PolyGram Records in 1995 and released two full-length albums before becoming inactive in 1998.

Fig Dish's sound was influenced by 80s college rock and indie bands such as Dinosaur Jr. and The Replacements, and has drawn comparisons to Cheap Trick. They were part of a mid-90s Chicago rock scene that included The Smashing Pumpkins, Veruca Salt, and Local H. They were closely associated and often shared bills with those and other Chicago acts such as Triple Fast Action, Smoking Popes, and Hushdrops. The band's name was said to have been chosen for its resemblance, when pronounced, to the vulgar German phrase fick dich .

That's What Love Songs Often Do , Fig Dish's 1995 major label debut album which had been out of print for years, was re-released in April 2013. [1] Chicago Magazine wrote that the band was a "folkloric Chicago outfit," and quoted Blake Smith's summary of the band's career: "We were too busy being the underdog Midwestern raging partying guys, and it killed us.... We just weren’t very good at playing the game, and we drank a lot back in those days." [1] The band reportedly "blew their first big chance at a signing when they opted to play an entire set of Neil Diamond covers at an A&R showcase at the now-defunct Avalon nightclub." [1]

Live shows by Fig Dish in Chicago became popular with a small devoted fan base due to the inclusion of goofy banter and audience interaction, and an apparent embrace of a drunken rock club party atmosphere. Fig Dish participated in the first and many subsequent Halloween shows at Chicago's Double Door. Some live shows included an encore of classic rock numbers that showcased guest vocalist Wes Kidd of Triple Fast Action, who performed apparently intoxicated and dressed in a pink bunny suit.

In September 1998, the band broke with their recording label, A&M Records. [2] According to Rolling Stone , the band considered its lack of widespread recognition to be the fault of the label's "zero effort" to provide exposure outside of Chicago, concluding, "The final straw was an estimated $80,000 soft-porn music video the quartet made for the single 'When Shirts Get Tight,' which featured a handful of elite porn stars. The band reportedly picked up the tab for both clean and dirty versions of the video, but neither of them received any airplay on MTV." [2] In contrast to the comedic video, the song's lyrics showcased the depth of the band's musical knowledge with lines quoted from Game Theory's song "Friend of the Family," from Real Nighttime (1985).

Triple Fast Action was an indie rock/alternative rock band started by Wes Kidd and Brian St. Clair, both previous members of Chicago band Rights of the Accused, in 1995. Kidd went on to manage such bands as Cheap Trick, The Damnwells and bandmate Kevin Tihista while working for New York–based Silent Partner Management. St. Clair joined the band Local H after stints as tour manager for Chicago's Liz Phair and served as drum tech for Bun E. Carlos of Cheap Trick. Triple Fast Action member Kevin Tihista released several of his own solo albums after the band's breakup.

Caviar was an alternative rock band from Chicago, Illinois. The band was created around 1999 by vocalist/guitarist Blake Smith and bassist Mike Willison after the breakup of their previous band Fig Dish, due to disputes with their label. After visiting London, England, Smith and Willison took an interest in electronica's rise in popularity, deciding to implement this to their more guitar-driven sound. Lead guitarist Dave Suh and drummer Jason Batchko were added to complete the lineup. The band released their debut self titled album in 2000, under major label Island Records, but only received modest success. They would release their second album, The Thin Mercury Sound in 2004, under smaller label Aezra. Smith and Willison later performed with Scott Lucas of Local H in the electronica project The Prairie Cartel. Smith later performed with Chicago noise pop band Forgotten Species. Willison would do a Portland-based solo project called Merit Badge, and has also been in the wine industry. Guitarist Suh has remained active and is currently the lead vocalist and guitarist of Chicago band The Assembly, along with his multi-instrumentalist brother, Nathan Suh. During his time in Caviar, Suh would also play in the power-pop band Woolworthy, with whom he reunited with in 2023 to record some tracks for their album "Electric Heartbreak."

Kevin Tihista is a singer-songwriter and musician. He is a former bassist for the Chicago group Triple Fast Action and contributed songs to the Veruca Salt album Resolver. Tihista's solo music is a mixture of pop and rock combining orchestration, electronica, vamping, and multi-tracking. Much of his solo work has been released under the eponym, "Kevin Tihista's Red Terror," a musical collaboration between Tihista and brothers Tom and Ellis Clark of the band "Epicycle."

The band consists of former members of Fig Dish and Caviar as well as Scott Lucas of Local H. The Prairie Cartel has played shows with other notable electronica acts including Klaxons and Simian Mobile Disco.

Gravity Studios is a recording studio in Chicago, Illinois founded in 1993 by Doug McBride. Starting with the single "Seether" by local band Veruca Salt, Gravity has hosted bands such as the Plain White T's, Silversun Pickups, and Fall Out Boy.

Hushdrops are a three-piece rock band from Chicago featuring current and former members of Veruca Salt, Liam Hayes and Plush, The Waco Brothers, The Webb Brothers, Josh Caterer, Kevin Tihista, and NRBQ. The band's 2004 debut album Volume One was followed in 2014 by the (mono) double album Tomorrow. Drummer Joe Camarillo died unexpectedly in January 2021, just as the group were completing their third album. In August 2021, it was announced that Pravda Records would release that album in November of that year, partly in tribute to Camarillo.
