Filipe Ribeiro de Meneses (born in 1969 in Lisbon) is a Portuguese historian,who has lived in Ireland since he was young. [1] He is a professor in Maynooth University,whose historiographical production is predominantly centered around the contemporary history of Portugal. [2]
He graduated with a B.A. in history and philosophy in 1992 and received his doctorate in 1997,both from Trinity College Dublin. [3] His doctoral thesis dealt with the governments of the Sacred União and Sidónio Pais. In 2017 he was elected a member of the Royal Irish Academy. [4] [2] [5]
Portugal,officially the Portuguese Republic,is a country located on the Iberian Peninsula,in Southwestern Europe,and whose territory also includes the macaronesian archipelagos of the Azores,Madeira,and the Savage Islands. The National University of Ireland,Maynooth,commonly known as Maynooth University (MU),is a constituent university of the National University of Ireland in Maynooth,County Kildare,Ireland. It was Ireland's youngest university until Technological University Dublin was established in 2019,having been founded by the Universities Act,1997,from the secular faculties of the now separate St Patrick's College,Maynooth,which was founded in 1795. Air Marshal Archibald Oliver Garfield Wilson was a Rhodesian fighter pilot who served in the Royal Air Force during World War II. He went on to become a senior commander and then Air Marshal in the Rhodesian Air Force in the 1960s and early 1970s. After retirement,he served two terms in the Rhodesian House of Assembly,in the Zimbabwe-Rhodesian Parliament in 1979,and then in the Zimbabwe Parliament in 1981–1982. He held several cabinet portfolios prior to the Internal Settlement. He resigned in 1982 to emigrate,with his wife Lorna,to Australia's Gold Coast in 1982. He became a citizen of Australia in 1988.
António de Oliveira Salazar was a Portuguese politician who served as Prime Minister of Portugal from 1932 to 1968. Having come to power under the Ditadura Nacional,he reframed the regime as the corporatist Estado Novo,with himself as a virtual dictator. The regime he created lasted until 1974,making it the longest-lived authoritarian regime in Europe.
Parliamentary elections were held in Portugal on 10 July 1921. Prior to the elections,the Republican Union had merged with the Evolutionist Party to form the Republican Liberal Party (PLR). He also served as an officer of the Portuguese army and as a Member of Parliament.
Portugal was officially neutral during World War II and the period of the Holocaust in German-occupied Europe. The country had been ruled by an authoritarian political regime led by António de Oliveira Salazar but had not been significantly influenced by racial antisemitism and was considered more sympathetic to the Allies than was neighbouring Francoist Spain.
