Finland competed at the 1948 Summer Olympics in London, England. 129 competitors, 123 men and 6 women, took part in 84 events in 16 sports. As the country hosted the next Olympics in Helsinki, a Finnish segment was performed at the closing ceremony.
Finland competed at the 2009 World Championships in Athletics, 15–23 August 2009. A team of 20 athletes was announced in preparation for the competition. The selected athletes had achieved at least one of the competition's qualifying standards. The team failed to win any medals; defending world champion javelin thrower Tero Pitkämäki managed only a fifth-place finish.

It was held at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon, United States, from July 15–24, 2022, with the country hosting that competition for the first time. The competition was originally scheduled for August 6–15, 2021, but it was postponed by one year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
