First Independent is a closed pro-Russian [1] news channel in Ukraine, whose unofficial owner is pro-Russian oligarch Viktor Medvedchuk (through his associate Taras Kozak). [2]

The broadcaster was formally established on November 1, 2019, but for the first two years it did not broadcast as a full-fledged television channel and actually started operating only in February 2021, after it was bought by Medvedchuk's Novyny media holding. [3] [4]

Despite the popularity of the website, the project was closed in 2005, as it failed to receive a government license for broadcasting. On February 26, 2021, a new TV channel, First Independent, was created on the basis of the media holding's closed TV channels – NewsOne, ZIK and 112 Ukraine – where pro-Russian journalists from the closed TV channels moved.
