Recording sessions for the album took place between 2008 and 2009 at Record Plant Studios in Hollywood, California and at other recording studios in Miami, Florida and Atlanta, Georgia. The album serves as Amerie's first release after leaving Columbia Records and forming her own label, Feenix Rising, which released the album under exclusive license and distribution through the Island Def Jam Music Group.

Erik Nelson is an American Grammy-nominated songwriter, music producer and recording engineer. His first commercial studio, Sinewave Studios, opened in 1994 in Bloomington, IL. It was at Sinewave that Nelson recorded, mixed and mastered the EP "Kill, I Oughtta" for Mudvayne. After Mudvayne's major label debut "L.D. 50", their label, Epic, re-released "Kill, I Oughtta" under the title "The Beginning of All Things to End" with some additional remixes from "L.D. 50".
Timeflies is an American pop-rap duo formed in October 2010 consisting of Cal Shapiro and Rob Resnick. They are known for their popular original music and popular YouTube covers. They first performed together as 'The Ride' in collaboration with writer Matt Merritt while in college at Tufts University.
Matrax is an American, Juno nominated songwriting and production duo from Philadelphia, consisting of Scott "Robot Scott" Carter and Damon "Haze" Hayes, who are best known as the producers for Keshia Chante', Eva Avila and Glenn Lewis. They produced the first and second singles for Keshia Chante', "Been Gone", "2U" and "Ring The Alarm", which was used for WarChild's "Keep The Beat" charity campaign. All the proceeds from "Ring The Alarm" went to supported children at war and was also featured on triple platinum compilation "MuchDance 2006". The duo also wrote the first single for Eva Avila entitled "Give me the music" and worked on Glenn Lewis upcoming album Moment of Truth they produced the second single "Ugly Face".
Sail Out is the debut extended play (EP) by American recording artist Jhené Aiko, released on June 19, 2013, through Def Jam Recordings. It was Aiko's first release under the label after leaving her contract with Sony Records in 2003. After leaving Sony Records, Aiko released her first mixtape Sailing Soul(s) (2011), independently; the mixtape featured appearances from well-known artists and was met with generally positive reviews and was nominated for Best Urban Contemporary Album at the 57th Annual Grammy Awards. . In 2012, Aiko met with American record producer and vice president of A&R at Def Jam No I.D., who ended up signing Aiko to his Artium Records imprint, through Def Jam.
