The stadium is part of a complex that includes an arena known by the name of Maracanãzinho, which means "The Little Maracanã" in Portuguese. The Torneio Roberto Gomes Pedrosa, also known as Taça de Prata, or nicknamed Robertão, was an association football competition contested in Brazil between 1967 and 1970 among soccer teams from São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Rio Grande do Sul, Minas Gerais and Paraná states. It was an important soccer tournament, being considered a predecessor to the Brazilian Championship induced in 1971. Thus in 2010 the Brazilian Football Confederation decided to consider the winners of the Robertão as Brazilian champions. The 1st edition of the tournament was organized by Federação de Futebol do Estado do Rio de Janeiro and Federação Paulista de Futebol.
The 2007 Pan American Games, officially known as the XV Pan American Games, were a major continental multi-sport event that took place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from July 13 to 29, 2007. A total of 5,633 athletes from 42 National Olympic Committees (NOCs) competed in 332 events in 34 sports and in 47 disciplines. During the Games, 95 new Pan American records were set; 2,196 medals were awarded; 1,262 doping control tests were performed and about 15,000 volunteers participated in the organization of the event, which was an Olympic qualification for 13 International Federations (IFs).

Affonso Eduardo Reidy was a Brazilian architect. He was the son of an English father and a Brazilian mother. Reidy entered the Escola Nacional de Belas Artes in Rio de Janeiro at age 17. He apprenticed with the French urban planner Alfred Agache (1875-1959) during his studies. Reidy graduated and became an architect in 1930. Lúcio Costa appointed him as a teaching assistant to the architect Gregori Warchavchik (1896-1972) at the Escola Nacional de Belas Artes in the same year.
The Copa da Republica de Ciclismo is a single day road cycling race held in Brazil. It exists as both a men's and a women's competition. The women's race, however, did not occur in the first and fifth editions. The first edition of the race was held in 2002 at the Aterro do Flamengo in Rio de Janeiro. From the second edition to the fifth, the race took place at the Monumental Axis of Brasília. The sixth edition took place on the streets of Belo Horizonte in December 2007. The seventh edition returned to Aterro do Flamengo in Rio de Janeiro.
