Flavia Wasserfallen (born 7 February 1979,Bern) is a Swiss politician of the Social Democratic Party (SP) and a member of the Swiss National Counci l.
She was raised in Hinterkappelen and following her graduation from the Gymnasium in 1998,she first became a Snowboardteacher in 1999. In 2000 she enrolled into University of Bern studying political sciences. She absolved an exchange semester at the University of Bologna within the Erasmus Programme and completed her studies with a Master's degree in 2007. [1]
She was a Snowboard teacher between 1999 and 2005 and between 2006 and 2012 she was employed in the Ministry of Energy . [1] In 2010 she established a local service who distributes organic vegetables to the city of Bern. She credits this with keeping her in contact with working people. [2] [3]
Between 2012 and 2018 she was a member of the Grand Council of Bern and the co-secretary of the SP. [4] She succeeded Evi Alleman (who was elected into the executive council of Bern) in the National Council in June 2018. [4] After Simonetta Sommaruga announced her resignation from the Federal Council in November 2022,she was considered a potential candidate,but she declined,alleging her envisioned candidacy to the Council of States. [5]
She advocates for equal pay and affordable health care. [4] She advocates for better working conditions in relation to the patients [6] and she is the president of the Mother and Father Counseling Association. [7] In September 2020,she was a co-founder of FC Helvetia,the female football team of the Swiss Parliament. [8] In November 2022,Wasserfallen cut her hair in solidarity with the women in Iran,who where protesting against the Government in Iran after the death of Mahsa Amini. [9]
She is married and has three children [4] and has her municipal citizenship in Langnau im Emmental and Ferenbalm. [10]
The Federal Council is the federal cabinet of the Swiss Confederation. Its seven members also serve as the collective head of state and government of Switzerland. Since after World War II,the Federal Council is by convention a permanent grand coalition government composed of representatives of the country's major parties and language regions.
Two by-elections to the Swiss Federal Council were held in Switzerland on 22 September 2010,after federal councillors Moritz Leuenberger (SP) and Hans-Rudolf Merz announced they would step down from the Federal Council towards the end of the year. The by-elections resulted in the elections of Simonetta Sommaruga from the SP and Johann Schneider-Ammann from the FDP,resulting in no change in the partisan composition of the council. It also resulted in the first majority of women on the Federal Council in its history,with Sommaruga joining Micheline Calmy-Rey,Doris Leuthard and Eveline Widmer-Schlumpf.
Simonetta Myriam Sommaruga is a Swiss politician who served as a Member of the Swiss Federal Council from 2010 to 2022. A member of the Social Democratic Party (SP/PS),she was President of the Swiss Confederation in 2015 and 2020.
Women in Switzerland gained the right to vote in federal elections after a referendum in February 1971. The first federal vote in which women were able to participate was the 31 October 1971 election of the Federal Assembly.
