Floods in Russia occur during the spring thaw and heavy rainfall seasons, caused by snowmelt, ice jams, and intense rainstorms, particularly in the vast river basins of the Volga, Ural, Lena, Don, and Ob rivers. [1] In 2020, there were 928 floods across the country, with over 80% caused due to excessive rainfall. [2] Notable flood events include the 2001 flooding in the Sakha Republic, which caused damages of over 7 billion roubles, [3] and the 2024 floods in the Urals, which led to the evacuation of thousands of people and resulted in local damages of 21 billion roubles (approximately $227 million).
