Flooring Porter (foaled 12 May 2015) is an Irish racehorse best known for his achievements in National Hunt racing. He was highly tried in his first season as a Novice hurdler, running nine times and winning two minor races. In the following season he made dramatic improvement, winning two Handicap hurdles before stepping up to Grade 1 class to win the Christmas Hurdle and the Stayers' Hurdle.

Background

Flooring Porter is a bay with no white markings horse bred in Ireland by Sean Murphy who is based at the Ryehill Stables in County Galway. Murphy had also bred the horse's dam and grand-dam. [2] As a foal in December 2015 the colt was consigned to the Goffs National Hunt sale and was bought for €6,000 by Richard Rohan. [3] The horse was gelded before returning to the Goffs sales ring in June when he was not sold after failing to reach his reserve price. [4] He entered the ownership of the Flooring Porter Syndicate and was taken into training by Gavin Cromwell at Navan in County Meath.

He was sired by Yeats, an outstanding flat stayer who won a record four editions of the Ascot Gold Cup. [5] Flooring Porter's dam Lillymile showed modest racing ability, winning two hurdle races from fourteen starts under National Hunt rules. [6] She was descended from the British broodmare Fair Terms who was the female-line ancestor of Narita Brian and Lochsong. [7]

Racing career

2019/20 National Hunt season

Flooring Porter began his career in the summer of 2019 when he was initially campaigned in Novice hurdle races. On his debut he started at odds of 25/1 at Cork Racecourse on 12 July and came home seventh, beaten more than forty lengths by the winner. [8] He subsequently finished eighth at Ballinrobe Racecourse on 23 June, thirteenth at Galway Racecourse on 3 August and seventh at Ballinrobe on 12 August. As in all of his starts that year Flooring Porter was ridden by Jonathan Moore when he started at odds of 7/1 for a hurdle at Bellewstown on 29 August and recorded his first success as he came from the rear of the field to take the lead at the third-last hurdle and won "comfortably" by seven lengths from Ashton Court. [9]

Four weeks after his win at Bellewstown, Flooring Porter started favourite for a novice hurdle at Downpatrick Racecourse and finished fourth of the eight runners behind Nibblers Charm. The gelding was then matched against more experienced opponents in a Handicap over three miles at Cork on 20 October and won "comfortably", taking the lead and the last and drawing away to take the prize by two and a half lengths at odds of 4/1. [10] At Leopardstown Racecourse on 29 December Flooring Porter contested a novice handicap in which he was among the leaders for most of the way but faded in the closing stages and came home sixth behind Peaches And Cream. He ended his first season on 13 February, when he finished second to the fourteen-year-old Seskinane in a handicap on heavy ground at Navan Racecourse.

2020/21 National Hunt season

On his first start of his second season Flooring Porter was assigned top weight of 164 pounds for a minor handicap over three miles at Gowran Park on 20 July. With Moore in the saddle he moved up to dispute the lead at the second struggle and got the better of a sustained struggle with the seven-year-old Cusp of Carabelli to win by half a length. [11] The gelding was beaten in handicaps on his next two starts, finishing third to Great White Shark at Galway on 31 July and second to Streets of Doyen at Gowran Park on 3 October. On 5 December at Navan Flooring Porter started a 22/1 outsider for a three mile handicap in which carried 146 pounds and was ridden by Moore. He took the lead soon after the start and recovered from a mistake at the third last to draw away and win "easily" by twelve lengths from the favourite The Bosses Oscar. [12]

Twenty-three days after his win at Navan, the gelding was stepped up in class for the Grade 1 Christmas Hurdle at Leopardstown, after his owners paid a supplementary entry fee, and went off the 11/1 fifth-choice in the betting. The Dorans Pride Novice Hurdle winner Fury Road started favourite, while the other five runners included Sire du Berlais (Lismullen Hurdle), The Storyteller (Ladbrokes Champion Chase), Bapaume (Champion Four Year Old Hurdle) and Bacardys (Champion Novice Hurdle). Flooring Porter took the lead from the start, went clear of his rivals approaching the final hurdle and stayed on well to win by six lengths from The Storyteller. [13] Gavin Cromwell's representative Feidhlim Cunningham, said: "There has been huge improvement in him. He's good going left-handed... Fair play to the owners. We suggested supplementing him for this and they backed us. They put the money where their mouth is and it's fairly paid off. He's really improved and Gavin has done a wonderful job with him. Johnny has given him a peach again... we're just thrilled to get the Grade 1 winner." [14]

On 18 March at Cheltenham Racecourse Flooring Porter was partnered by Danny Mullins when he started at odds of 12/1 in a fifteen runner field for the Grade 1 Stayers' Hurdle. Jonathan Moore felt unable to take the ride after being injured in a fall and recommended Mullins as the best replacement. [15] The contenders for the race included the previous winners Paisley Park (the 9/4 favourite) and Lisnagar Oscar as well as Sire du Berlais, Fury Road, The Storyteller, Bacardys, Beacon Edge (Boyne Hurdle), Vinndication (Sodexo Gold Cup), If The Cap Fits (Liverpool Hurdle), Sam Spinner (Long Walk Hurdle) and Lil Rockerfeller (Ascot Hurdle). In a repeat of his performance at Leopardstown Flooring Porter made all the running, broke clear after the second last flight and kept on well up the run-in to win by three and a quarter lengths from Sire du Berlais. [16] Cromwell said "He ran straight and true today, bar going right at the last. Other than that he was grand... Everybody knows how hard it is to get a good horse. We came across this lad by accident, he was a very cheap store so it's a bit of a fairytale really – it just goes to show dreams can still happen." [15]

Arkle was an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse. A bay gelding by Archive out of Bright Cherry, he was the grandson of the unbeaten flat racehorse and prepotent sire Nearco. Arkle was bred by Mary Baker of Malahow House, near Naul, County Dublin and was born at Ballymacoll Stud, County Meath. He was owned by Anne Grosvenor, Duchess of Westminster, who named him after the mountain Arkle in Sutherland, Scotland, that bordered her Sutherland estate. Vintage Crop British-bred Thoroughbred racehorse

Vintage Crop was a British-bred Irish-trained Thoroughbred racehorse best known for becoming the first northern hemisphere trained runner to win Australia's premier race the Melbourne Cup. The chestnut gelding competed in flat racing in Ireland, England, and Australia from 1992 to 1995. He won 16 races in Ireland, England, and Australia. For his performance during the 1993 racing season he earned the Cartier Award for Top Stayer.

Danoli was an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse. He was best known for his successes in hurdle races, although he also had success in steeplechases later in his career. Danoli was described as the most popular racehorse in Ireland during the 1990s, and was regarded as "the People's Champion". His successes were achieved despite the fact that his career was frequently disrupted by injury. He was noted for a rivalry with another Irish horse, Dorans Pride.

Rule Supreme is a retired, Irish Thoroughbred racehorse who competed in National Hunt racing. During a racing career which lasted from May 2001 until December 2009 he won eleven of his forty-six races and was placed on nineteen occasions. He showed some promise in his early career but emerged as a top-class performer in 2004 when he won the Royal & SunAlliance Chase at Cheltenham Racecourse in England and the Grande Course de Haies d'Auteuil at Auteuil Hippodrome in France. In the following year he won the Hennessy Gold Cup at Leopardstown Racecourse in Ireland. After his career in National Hunt races was ended by injury he had some success on the amateur Point-to-point circuit.

Newmill is a retired, Irish Thoroughbred racehorse who competed in National Hunt racing. He reached his peak as an eight-year-old in the spring of 2006 when he won two of the season's most important two mile steeplechases: the Queen Mother Champion Chase in England and the Kerrygold Champion Chase in Ireland. In his early career he showed promise as a novice hurdler winning the Royal Bond Novice Hurdle, Barry & Sandra Kelly Novice Hurdle and Johnstown Novice Hurdle. When switched to chasing he won the Paddy Fitpatrick Memorial Novice Chase and Kinloch Brae Chase before recording his most important victories. His later career was less successful although he did win the Red Mills Trial Hurdle in the autumn of 2006 and the Kinloch Brae Chase for a second time as a twelve-year-old in 2010.

Back In Front is a retired, Irish Thoroughbred racehorse who competed in National Hunt racing. The gelding showed early promise in National Hunt Flat races, winning twice and finishing third in an exceptionally strong renewal of the Champion Bumper. He was one of the leading novice hurdlers in the 2003–04 season, winning four races including the Supreme Novices' Hurdle in England and the Evening Herald Champion Novice Hurdle in Ireland. In the following season he won the Morgiana Hurdle and was regarded as a Champion Hurdle contender before being sidelined by injury. Back In Front won the Bula Hurdle in 2004 but ran poorly when joint-favourite for the Champion Hurdle in 2005. He had little success when switched to steeplechasing and was retired in 2007, having won eleven of his twenty-five races.

Klairon Davis was a French-bred, Irish-trained Thoroughbred racehorse who competed under National Hunt rules. In a racing career which lasted from April 1993 and May 2001, he won twenty of his fifty-four races and was placed on sixteen occasions. After beginning in National Hunt Flat races he competed over hurdles winning the Punchestown Champion Novice Hurdle in 1994. In the following season he raced in novice chases and recorded major wins in the Dennys Gold Medal Chase, Arkle Novice Chase and Arkle Challenge Trophy. In 1996 he had his biggest success when taking the Queen Mother Champion Chase and followed up in the BMW Handicap Chase. He was never as good again, but won a second BMW Chase in 1997 and took the Normans Grove Chase in 1998, 1999 and 2001 before retiring at the age of twelve. During his career he had sustained rivalries with the leading Irish jumpers Sound Man and Merry Gale.

Un de Sceaux French racehorse

Un de Sceaux is a French-bred AQPS racehorse who completed in National Hunt racing. After winning both his races in France he was transferred to Ireland where he won two novice hurdles. In the 2013/14 National Hunt season he was undefeated in five races including the Red Mills Trial Hurdle in Ireland and both the Prix Hypothese and the Prix Leon Rambaud in France. When switched to steeplechases he recovered from a fall on his debut to win the Arkle Novice Chase, Arkle Challenge Trophy and Ryanair Novice Chase in the 2014–15 season. In 2015–16 he won the Clarence House Chase but was beaten by Sprinter Sacre when favourite for the Queen Mother Champion Chase in what was his first defeat when completing a steeplechase. He began the 2016–17 with a win in the Tingle Creek Chase and followed up with his second victory in the Clarence House Chase before taking the Ryanair Chase in March. In 2018 Un de Sceaux became the first horse in history to win three Clarence House chases but was disappointed in Cheltenham by Balko des Flos when attempting to regain his Ryanair crown. He finished the season on a high by winning the devenish chase at Fairyhouse before surprising his stablemate Douvan at Punchestown under Patrick Mullins. At this stage of his career Un de Sceaux has won 9 Grade ones and has earned over 1,300,000 in prize money.

Bacchanal was an Irish-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse who competed in National Hunt racing. He was lightly-raced, winning ten of his twenty races between January 1999 and January 2003. As a novice hurdler he won two of his four races and in the following season he won the Gerry Feilden Hurdle before recording his biggest win in the Stayers' Hurdle. He later developed into a top class steeplechaser, winning the Feltham Novices' Chase, Reynoldstown Novices' Chase and Aon Chase and twice finishing third in the King George VI Chase. He returned to hurdles to win the Long Distance Hurdle in 2002, but was killed in a fall at Cheltenham in January 2003.

Princeful was an Irish-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse who competed in National Hunt racing. After showing useful form in his early career, winning two National Hunt Flat races and a novice hurdle, he improved through the handicap ranks in the 1997/1998 National Hunt season before recording an upset win in the Stayers' Hurdle. He looked better than ever in the following year, winning the Long Distance Hurdle and the Long Walk Hurdle, but was brought down and badly injured in his first and only appearance in a steeplechase. He never recovered his best form thereafter and was retired from racing in 2002 with a record of seven wins and three places from eighteen races.

Limestone Lad is a retired Irish Thoroughbred racehorse who competed mainly in National Hunt racing. Bred, owned and trained by a farming family in rural Ireland he was offered for sale as three-year-old but was rejected after failing a medical examination. His early racing career was unremarkable but he made steady improvement and eventually retired with a record of thirty-five wins and nineteen places from sixty-five races. He was best known for his durability and his performances in long-distance hurdle races and usually raced from the front.

Nichols Canyon (horse) British-bred Thoroughbred racehorse

Nichols Canyon was a British-bred Thoroughbred racehorse best known for his performances in National Hunt races. He showed good form on the flat before emerging as an outstanding performer in hurdle races. In his first two seasons of competition he raced on the flat and won three of his ten races including the Noel Murless Stakes and the Prix Denisy as well as finishing second in the St Simon Stakes.

Douvan National Hunt racehorse trained in Ireland

Douvan is a French-bred, Irish-trained Thoroughbred racehorse who competes in National Hunt racing. He was originally trained in France before moving to Ireland in the summer of 2014. After finishing second on his debut he won his remaining five races over hurdles including the Moscow Flyer Novice Hurdle, Supreme Novices' Hurdle and Herald Champion Novice Hurdle. In the following year he was switched to steeplechasing and won all his six races over fences as a novice including the Racing Post Novice Chase, Arkle Novice Chase, Arkle Challenge Trophy, Maghull Novices' Chase and Ryanair Novice Chase. In the 2016–17 season he continued his unbeaten run in steeplechases by winning his first three starts, including the Grade One Paddy Power Cashcard Chase, before suffering his first defeat over fences when favourite for the Queen Mother Champion Chase.

Djakadam French-bred Thoroughbred racehorse

Djakadam is a French-bred, Irish-trained Thoroughbred racehorse who competes in National Hunt races.

San Sebastian was a British Thoroughbred racehorse who excelled over extended distances. Originally trained in Ireland he showed modest ability in his early career but improved steadily and recorded his first big win as a four-year-old when he took the Ascot Stakes. He returned to Ascot a year later to win the Queen Alexandra Stakes and was transferred to England at the end of the year. As a six-year-old he recorded his most prestigious win when he took the Group 1 Prix du Cadran at Longchamp Racecourse. He failed to win in 2001 and was then moved to France where he won over hurdles in Autumn. He shifted base for a final time when he was exported to New Zealand, where he won three steeplechases. Apart from his twelve victories the gelding was placed in several high-class races including the Prix Royal Oak, Goodwood Cup, Sagaro Stakes, Saval Beg Stakes and New Zealand Grand National. San Sebsatian died in his paddock in New Zealand at the age of 11 in December 2005.

Minella Indo is an Irish racehorse who competes in National Hunt racing. He was one of the leading Novices' Hurdlers 2018/19 season when he recorded Grade 1 victories in the Spa Novices' Hurdle and Irish Daily Mirror Novice Hurdle. He made little impact in his first season over fences but emerged as a top class steeplechaser in the 2020/21 season as he won the M W Hickey Memorial Chase and the BetVictor Make Your Best Bet Chase before taking the Cheltenham Gold Cup.

Penhill is a British-bred racehorse best known for his achievements in National Hunt racing. Racing on the flat in England he showed good form in handicap races, winning five times from eighteen starts. When transferred to Ireland to race over obstacles he was one of the best Novice Hurdlers of the 2016/2017 season, winning six races including the Joe Mac Novice Hurdle, Guinness Novice Hurdle and Spa Novices' Hurdle. His subsequent career was disrupted by chronic injury problems but he recorded his biggest win in March 2018 when he won the Stayers' Hurdle.

Paisley Park is an Irish-bred, British-trained racehorse best known for his achievements in National Hunt. He showed promise when finishing second in a National Hunt Flat race on his debut but nearly died when he contracted colic shortly afterwards. He won one race as a novice hurdler in the 2017/18 National Hunt season and established himself as an outstanding stayer in the following season when he won the Betfair Stayers' Handicap Hurdle, Long Walk Hurdle, Cleeve Hurdle and Stayers' Hurdle. In the 2019/20 National Hunt season he won the Long Distance Hurdle and a second Cleeve Hurdle. In his next campaign he took the Long Walk Hurdle again and ran third in the Stayers' Hurdle.

Lisnagar Oscar is an Irish-bred, British-trained racehorse best known for his achievements in National Hunt racing. He won his only Point-to-point race and then showed very promising form as a Novice hurdler in the 2018/19 National Hunt season, winning the Prestige Novices' Hurdle and being placed in both the Prestige Novices' Hurdle and the Sefton Novices' Hurdle. In the following season he raced unsuccessfully in Steeplechases before returning to smaller obstacles and recording his biggest win in the Stayers' Hurdle. He failed to win in his first four start of the 2020/21 season, when he underwent surgery to correct his breathing.

Minella Times is an Irish-bred Thoroughbred racehorse who competes in National Hunt racing. In 2021, he won the Grand National under Rachael Blackmore, becoming the first horse ridden by a female jockey to win the race.
