Florence Banku Obi is a Nigerian academic, author and a professor of education with specialization in psychology and special needs education. She is the 11th substantive vice-chancellor of the University of Calabar and the first female vice-chancellor since the inception of the institution. [1] [2] [3] After her appointment as the new VC, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege who chairs the Senate Adhoc Committee on Constitution Review, described Prof. Obi as "an astute educational icon". [4] She was previously the deputy vice-chancellor, academics and commissioner for women affairs in Cross River State. [5] [6] She was a candidate in the 2015 VC election but was not elected until 2020, when she became the first woman to be elected. [7] In 2007, she served as the social development and member of the executive council, Cross River State. [8]

Early life and education

Obi is from Bansan–Osokom, Boki Local Government Area of Cross River State. [9] She started her education at St Bridget's Primary School, Ogep Osokom, Boki, Cross River State where she got her F.S.LC, finishing in 1969. She then enrolled at the St. Thomas's Teachers Training College, Ogoja, Cross River State, where she graduated in 1983. She obtained her degree in special education at University of Calabar. In 1990, she got her MEd in special education,l at the same institution. She moved to the Jordanhill College where she obtained a PGCEE in 1993. In 2002, she finished her PhD in psychology of education, University of Calabar. [10]

Academic career

In 1990, Obi started her academic career as an assistant lecturer at the Institute of Education, University of Calabar. In 1992, she won a six-month postgraduate scholarship to Jordan-Hill College of Education, under the World University Service (WUS), World-Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) and the Nigerian Conservation Foundation (NCF) during an interview for staff of the Institute of Education.

After the scholarship offer, she was placed in charge of the WWF/NCF funded schools and community education programmes. In 2007, she became a professor of special needs education. [11]

Florence Obi is married and has four children and six grandchildren. [12]

University of Cross River State also known as UNICROSS is a state-owned tertiary institution with four campuses spread across four Local Government Areas of the state. The University was formerly known as the Cross River University of Technology (CRUTECH). It was renamed in February of 2021 by a bill passed at Cross River State House of Assembly which was then approved by the former Governor of the State, Benedict Ayade. The change of the tertiary institution's name was to enable the varsity function as a conventional University, which provides the opportunity to offer more professional courses rather focusing on tech-related courses. The present Vice Chancellor of the institution is Prof Augustine Angba.

Olanrewaju Adigun Fagbohun SAN is a Nigerian lawyer, academic, author, investor, professor of environmental law and a Senior Advocate of Nigeria. He served as the 8th substantive vice-chancellor of Lagos State University between 11 January 2016 to 10 January 2021. His administration as LASU's vice chancellor witnessed tremendous gains in research, innovations and infrastructural development – which helped to propel the university from obscurity to the second best university in Nigeria according to the 2021 Times Higher Education ranking. He was appointed by the governor of Lagos State, Akinwunmi Ambode to succeed professor John Obafunwa, a Nigerian pathologist whose tenure ended on 31 October 2015. His appointment was lauded by the Lagos State University chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities. The association through the chapter chairman pledge their full support for good administration.

Ekanem Ikpi Braide (OFR) is a Nigerian Parasitologist. She was a Vice-Chancellor of Cross River University of Technology (CRUTECH), Calabar, and pioneer Vice-Chancellor of Federal University of Technology, Lafia. She is credited with a major contribution to the eradication of guinea worm in Nigeria. In 2020, she was made the first female President-elect of the Nigerian Academy of Science. She is the first female President of the Nigerian Academy of Science.

Fatima Batul Mukhtar is a Nigerian academic, a professor of botany and the current Vice Chancellor of Azman University Kano. Her research interest are centered on "growth regulation, biostatistics, biotechnology and plant conservation". she was appointed Vice Chancellor of Federal University Dutse by President Muhammadu Buhari. she served between 2016 and 2021.

Lilian Imuetinyan Salami is a Nigerian academic who was appointed vice-chancellor of the University of Benin in 2019. Professor Yakubu Aboki Ochefu, son to late Colonel Anthony Ochefu, is the Secretary to the Committee of Vice Chancellors of Nigerian Universities. He is a professor of African Economic History and Development Studies with the Benue State University since 2003. He is a former Deputy Vice-Chancellor at the Benue State University, former Vice Chancellor of Kwararafa University, Taraba State, Nigeria and the President of the University of Calabar Alumni Association. In December 2022, he was elected chairman, Conference of Alumni Associations of Nigerian Universities. His academic publications are on the open educational resources platforms including Academia.edu and he co-edited Studies in the History of Central Nigeria Area / with Aliyu A. Idrees in 2002.

Angela Freeman Miri is a Nigerian Professor who became the Vice Chancellor of Federal University, Lokoja in 2017. She is a professor of English and a published poet also.
