Folashade Sherifat Jaji (born 10 March 1957) is a Nigerian chemist,civil servant and the Secretary to Lagos State Government. [1] She was formerly the Head of Service in Lagos State, [2] a post she held after service as the Permanent Secretary,Lagos State Ministry of Establishments,Training and Pensions. [3] She also helped the federal government to improve the civil service fund reserve.
Sherifat was born on March 3,1957,in Surulere,a metropolitan city of Lagos State,southwestern Nigeria. [4] She attended Anglican Girls Primary School in Surulere,lagos before she proceeded to Queen's College in Yaba,where she obtained the West Africa School Certificate in 1974. [5] She received a Bachelor of science degree from the University of Ibadan,where she was trained as a chemist before she enrolled for a Post Graduate Diploma in Public Administration at Administrative Staff College of Nigeria after she completed the compulsory one year Youth Service at the Nigerian Breweries. [6] Having completed the diploma program in 1985,she proceeded to the University of Lagos where she received a Master of Business Administration's degree in 1989. [7]
She joined the Lagos State Civil Service on 27 October 1980 at the state Judicial Service Commission before she was deployed to the state Governor's Office,Department of Political Affairs where she served for two years,between 1980 and 1982,the same year she got a transfer to the state civil service commission where she spent another two years before she returned to the Military Governor's Office at the Department of Programs and Budget where she spent seven years,between 1985 and 1992. In November 2008,she was appointed Permanent Secretary,Teachers’Establishment and Pensions Office,a position she held for four years. [10] On 1 March 2011 she became the Permanent Secretary,Lagos State Ministry of Establishments,Training and Pensions. [11] On 17 February 2015,she was appointed as Lagos State Head of Service to succeed Josephine Oluseyi Williams,who was the 17th Head of Service of the State Public Service [12] [13]
On 30 May 2019,Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu appointed Jaji as the new Secretary to the State Government (SSG). [14]

The Lagos State Head of Service is the highest rank of the Lagos State Civil Service. The appointment is often confirmed by the Governor of Lagos State subject to the approval of the State House of Assembly. The appointment is often based on the years of experience and services at the State Civil Service and preferably,a serving permanent secretary. The position was formerly combined with the Secretary to the State Government during the Military regime and the appointed civil servant automatically becomes the Deputy Governor of the state but the offices were separated in 1999.

The 2019 Lagos gubernatorial election was conducted on 9 March to choose the Governor of Lagos State. The election was held concurrently with various state level elections. Incumbent APC Governor Akinwunmi Ambode lost to the APC flag bearer Babajide Sanwo-Olu at a direct primary election in October 2018 and hence ineligible to run for second term under APC. Babajide Sanwo-Olu won in a landslide against Jimi Agbaje of the PDP who had previously run unsuccessfully for Lagos state governor twice. From 1999,Lagos state has been governed by AD,then ACN,two parties which subsequently formed part of the coalition that birthed the APC in 2013.

He was born to late Chief Taoreed Lawal Akapo,the Ojora of Lagos (1977-1993) and Olori Muinat Olabisi Abeni Ajasa. He is from the Ojora,Aromire,Shokun and Abisogun branch of Oniru royal families of Lagos State. He became the 15th Oniru of Iruland on 7 June 2020 after the death of Oba Idowu Oniru in September 2019. He was presented with the staff of Office by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on 7 June. 2020. Prior to his enthronement,he was the Commissioner for Agriculture in Lagos State.

The 2023 Lagos State gubernatorial election will take place on 11 March 2023,to elect the Governor of Lagos State,concurrent with elections to the Lagos State House of Assembly as well as twenty-seven other gubernatorial elections and elections to all other state houses of assembly. The election will be held two weeks after the presidential election and National Assembly elections. Incumbent APC Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu is eligible to run for re-election and has been renominated by his party.
