Fontana High School (FOHI) is a secondary public school in Fontana, California in the Fontana Unified School District. [2] Fontana High serves grades 9 through 12.

History

A product of the Southern California post war boom, Fontana High (referred to locally as "FoHi") was completed in September 1952. The school was needed to serve the children of thousands of blue collar families from across the country who came to work at the Kaiser Steel plant – built just outside Fontana in the 1940s – and at the time the only steel production plant of its kind west of the Mississippi. [3]

2003 riot

In 2003, a fight between two students erupted into a riot of over 500 students at a school pep rally. Police fired bean bags and rubber pellets to scatter the crowd of students. [4] The Fontana Police Department required assistance from other local law enforcement agencies (including the California Highway Patrol) after students threw rocks at responding officers, but the situation was ultimately resolved in under two hours. [5] Six students were placed under arrest and thirty-four other students were suspended by the school district including riot leaders Julie Sanchez, Francisco Lopez, Ashton Vaughn, Stephanie Coronado and Alex Sanchez [6] There was no significant property damage or injuries, though a teacher was accidentally struck by a police bean bag round. [5]

The high school used to be part of the Chaffey Joint Union High School District prior to 1955 [7]

Football

Under coach Dick Bruich, the 1987 team was ranked the best in the nation. [9] The Steeler football team was almost as well known for the traveling "rowdy" fanbase, which followed the team en masse throughout the season and into the playoffs. At home games, much of the town shut down as more than 8,000 [10] maroon and white clad fans filled Steeler Stadium for matches with rival schools like Redlands, Pacific Eisenhower [11] and Colton.

By the 1990s, the glory days for the team had faded. An economic downturn (the Kaiser Steel plant had shut down in 1983 [12] ) and a continued population boom led to demographic shifts and classroom overcrowding. The addition of new high schools split the talent base and the team had a prolonged string of losing seasons. [13]

In April 2007, Razov became the third player in MLS history to score 100 goals. Razov also played for the United States men's national soccer team.

Eagle Mountain is a ghost town in the California desert in Riverside County founded in 1948 by industrialist Henry J. Kaiser. The town is located at the entrance of the now-defunct Eagle Mountain iron mine, once owned by the Southern Pacific Railroad, then Kaiser Steel, and located on the southeastern corner of Joshua Tree National Park. The town's fully integrated medical care system, similar to other Kaiser operations in California, was the genesis of the modern-day Kaiser Permanente health maintenance organization. Eagle Mountain is accessible by Kaiser Road from California State Route 177, twelve miles (19 km) north of Desert Center, midway between Indio and the California/Arizona state line along Interstate 10.

Steven Craig Morrison is a retired professional American football linebacker who played for the Indianapolis Colts of the National Football League (NFL) from 1995 to 1998. He is currently the associate head coach/linebackers coach at Bowling Green Falcons football. He previously served as the linebackers coach for the Eastern Michigan Eagles football team, on the coaching staff at Western Michigan, and as the linebackers coach at Syracuse Orange football. Prior to these professional experiences, he had excelled in college football as an All-Big Ten Conference inside linebacker from 1990 to 1994 for the Michigan Wolverines, whom he served as captain. In high school, he had been a Detroit Free Press first-team All-State (Michigan) and second-team All-Midwest selection in football and an All-American in lacrosse.
