The 2015 Southeast Asian Games, officially known as the 28th Southeast Asian Games, or the 28th SEA Games, and commonly known as Singapore 2015, was a Southeast Asian multi-sport event held by the city-state of Singapore from 5 to 16 June 2015, It was the fourth time the country hosted the games. Singapore had previously also hosted the games in 1973, 1983 and the 1993 editions.

The football tournament at the 2001 Southeast Asian Games was held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. It included a men's tournament, and was also the first Southeast Asian Games to include a women's tournament. The men's competition was held from 1 to 15 September 2001, while the women's tournament was held from 4 to 14 September 2001. The men's tournament was the first of the Southeast Asian Games to have an age limit, and has been played by U-23 national teams since then, while the women's tournament has no age limit. All matches were held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

The second round of AFC matches for 2018 FIFA World Cup qualification was played from 24 May 2015 to 29 March 2016.

Football at the 2015 Southeast Asian Games was held at Singapore National Stadium, Jalan Besar Stadium and Bishan Stadium, Singapore from 29 May to 15 June 2015. Medals were awarded in one event for men's competitions. There were match-fixing scandals involving East Timor team with several other teams.

The 2023 Southeast Asian Games, also known as the 32nd Southeast Asian Games, or the 32nd SEA Games, and commonly known as Cambodia 2023, is the 32nd edition of the Southeast Asian Games, a biennial sports multi-sport event which is currently being held from 5 to 17 May 2023 in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.

The third round of the 2019 AFC Asian Cup qualification was played from 26 March 2017 to 27 March 2018.

The men's football tournament at the 2019 Southeast Asian Games was held from November 25 to December 10, 2019 in the Philippines. All eleven Southeast Asian nations participated in the men's tournament. Matches were played in Manila, Biñan and Imus. Men's teams were restricted to under-22 players.

The men's football tournament at the 2021 Southeast Asian Games was held from 6 – 22 May 2022 in Vietnam. Ten Southeast Asian nations participated in the men's tournament. The group stage and semi-finals were played in Việt Trì and Nam Định, while Hanoi hosted the bronze and gold medal matches. Men's teams are restricted to under-23 players with a maximum of three over-aged players allowed.

The women's football tournament at the 2021 Southeast Asian Games was held from 9–21 May 2022 in Vietnam. Seven Southeast Asian nations participated in the women's tournament. All matches were played in Quảng Ninh. There was no age limit for this tournament. Indonesia withdrew from the competition after the draw. Malaysia withdrew from the competition before the draw. Timor-Leste did not take part in the competition.
