The men's football tournament at the 2023 SEA Games was held in Cambodia. Ten Southeast Asian nations entered the men's tournament. [1] The tournament was limited to players exclusively under-22 years of age (born on or after 1 January 2001). [2]

Contents

Vietnam were the two-time defending champions, but were eliminated in the semi-finals by Indonesia. The Indonesian went on to win their first title after 32 years, and their third title in history by defeating Thailand 5–2 in the final. [3]

Three venues were used during the tournament. Olympic Stadium hosted Group A, the Semi-finals, Bronze medal match and the Gold medal Match.

Draw

The draw for the tournament was held on 5 April 2023 at the Morodok Techo National Stadium. [1] 10 teams were seeded into five pots based on their performance in the 2021 edition. The hosts were allocated in Pot 1. [4] [5] [6]

Controversy

Chaos ensued in the match between the Indonesia and Thailand in the final match.

The first incident occurred when Al Hatmi blew the whistle during the injury time of the second half. At that time Indonesia had a 2–1 lead and were ready to celebrate their victory and championship title. When the whistle sounded, the Indonesian side coach, Indra Sjafri, started celebrating with the staff because they mistook the long blow for a full-time signal. However, Al Hatmi had actually intended to signal a free kick for Thailand. After the premature celebrations settled down, the free kick that followed led to Thailand striker Yotsakorn Burapha scoring an equalizer goal, thereby making the score 2–2. Indonesian coaches and players began criticizing the referee's decision, and Indonesian media claims that Al Hatmi gave an unfair advantage to the opponent with the seven-minute additional time. [7]

After the extra time match started, Indonesian player Irfan Jauhari scored a goal in the 91st minute, making the score 3–2 and giving back Indonesia the lead. The goal was again followed by unrest in the benches. In the videos that were shown, Indonesia's team manager Sumardji, was beaten and punched by several Thai coaching staff and players which resulted in Sumardji's face bleeding from the nose and mouth. [8] As a result of the incident, the referee issued several red cards to the Thailand players and coaching staff. Indonesia went on to score two more goals and lose none during the remaining duration of extra time, and conquer the championship title after 32 years of drought. [9]

The 2019 AFF U-22 Youth Championship or AFF U-22 LG Cup 2019 was the 2nd edition of the AFF U-22 Youth Championship organised by the ASEAN Football Federation (AFF). Indonesia won the tournament after defeating Thailand 2–1 in the final. The tournament was held from 17 to 26 February in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. This was its first as an under-22 tournament, with the previous edition being an under-23 tournament. 2005 AFF U-23 Youth Championship winners Thailand were the defending champions, as there was no competition from 2006 to 2018 and the 2011 edition was cancelled.

The 2019 AFC Cup group stage was played from 25 February to 26 June 2019. A total of 36 teams competed in the group stage to decide the 11 places in the knockout stage of the 2019 AFC Cup.

The men's football tournament at the 2019 SEA Games was held from November 25 to December 10, 2019 in the Philippines. All eleven Southeast Asian nations participated in the men's tournament. Matches were played in Manila, Biñan and Imus. Men's teams were restricted to under-22 players.

The 2020 AFC U-19 Championship qualification was an international men's under-19 football competition which was originally held to decide the participating teams of the 2020 AFC U-19 Championship. The AFC announced the cancellation of the final tournament due to the COVID-19 pandemic on 25 January 2021.

The 2020 AFC Cup qualifying play-offs were played from 21 January to 26 February 2020, before the remaining matches were suspended, and eventually cancelled by the AFC on 10 September 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Under the original competition format, a total of 19 teams would compete in the qualifying play-offs to decide seven of the 36 places in the group stage of the 2020 AFC Cup.

The 2021 Hun Sen Cup is the 15th season of the Hun Sen Cup, the premier football knockout tournament in Cambodia, for association football clubs in Cambodia involving Cambodian League and provincial teams organized by the Football Federation of Cambodia. Visakha won the cup after beating Nagaworld 2-0 in the 2020 final. It was Visakha's first time winning the cup. The competition is split into 2 stages, provincial stage and national stage. The top three teams from provincial stage will enter the national stage with the 13 teams in Cambodian League 2021.

The 2022 AFF U-23 Championship was the 3rd edition of the AFF U-23 Championship, organised by ASEAN Football Federation (AFF). The tournament was held from 14 to 26 February in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. Indonesia were the defending champions, having won the 2019 edition. The tournament was held amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. Indonesia and Myanmar withdrew from the tournament after several of their players tested positive for COVID-19.

Men's teams are restricted to under-23 players with a maximum of three over-aged players allowed.

The women's football tournament at the 2023 SEA Games was held from 3–15 May 2023 in Cambodia. Eight Southeast Asian nations participated in the women's tournament. All matches are played in Phnom Penh. There is no age limit for this tournament. Indonesia withdrew from the competition after the draw. Timor-Leste did not take part in the competition.

The men's association football gold medal match of the 2023 SEA Games was contested by Indonesia and Thailand at the Olympic Stadium in Phnom Penh on 16 May 2023. Omani referee Qasim Al-Hatmi issued a SEA Games record 13 yellow cards and 9 red cards, setting a new record for cautions at any SEA Games tournament.

The men's football tournament at the 2022 Asian Games was held from 19 September to 7 October 2023 in Hangzhou, China.
