Contents

History

The school was opened in 2001, with only year 8. Year levels increased each year with the first cohort of year 12 students finishing their secondary education in 2005. FLSHS is an enrolment-managed school which means students, and their parents, must live in the school's catchment area to be eligible for enrolment. FLSHS has developed a strong reputation for academic and sporting excellence. In 2011, the school has about 1280 students enrolled in years 8–12.

Campus

The FLSHS campus consists of both indoor and outdoor sporting facilities, extensive computer laboratories and a high-class resource center that was built in partnership with the St. Johns Anglican College.

School system

To maintain a small school feel and provide opportunities to develop strong relationships between students and staff, the school operates as a separate middle school (years 7, 8 and 9) and senior school (years 10, 11 and 12). There are 3 deputy principals (middle school, senior school and operations) and a student coordinator in both the middle and senior school. 10 heads of department lead, manage and supervise the curriculum in their respective areas. The head of special education services and specially trained special education teachers develop and provide programs and services for the students with a disability who are enrolled at the school.

Excellence programs

Academic Program of Excellence

For academically high performing students in grades 7-9. Year 6 students are tested during their last year of primary school (year 6) and are also required to provide other supporting documents such as their year 6 report card and year 5 NAPLAN results. The APEx class always uses the class denotation 7E, 8E, or 9E, by respective grade. The same class is maintained for all years of junior schooling, with the only requirements being the sustainment of a B grade or higher in effort and behavior with no suspensions. While graded assessments and exams are the same as core classes, the APEx class provides extra opportunities in schooling such as the Bridge award and Optiminds certifications, as well as the opportunity to be surrounded by likeminded students.

Instrumental Music Program of Excellence

The instrumental music program is for grades 7-12, offering lessons in strings, brass, percussion, and woodwind instruments, in addition to piano and vocal lessons being introduced in 2026. The program further requires the enrolment in one or more school music group corresponding to your instrument. This includes the string orchestra, concert band, jazz band, drumline, or vocal group. Each group has weekly rehearsals and also participates in various music competitions such as Music Fest. The Instrumental music program further performs at various school events such as ANZAC day, Graduation, or the Academic ceremony. In order to encourage the enrolment of grade 6 students from feeder schools in the program, the IMPoE tours primary schools such as Forest Lake State School and Pallara State School annually.

This includes, but is not limited to, junior musical theatre, junior hip-hop, senior contemporary, senior lyrical, mega crew, and senior varsity.
