Metalcore is a fusion music genre that combines elements of extreme metal and hardcore punk. As with other styles blending metal and hardcore, such as crust punk and grindcore, metalcore is noted for its use of breakdowns, slow, intense passages conducive to moshing. Other defining instrumental qualities include heavy riffs and stop-start rhythm guitar playing, occasional blast beats, and double bass drumming. Vocalists in the genre typically yell or scream. Some later metalcore bands combine this with clean singing, often during the chorus. Death growls and gang vocals are common. 1990s metalcore bands were inspired by hardcore while later metalcore bands were inspired by melodic death metal. Melodic death metal bands like At the Gates and In Flames influenced later metalcore bands.
Atreyu is an American metalcore band from Yorba Linda, California, formed in 1998. The band consists of vocalist Brandon Saller, guitarists Dan Jacobs and Travis Miguel, bassist Marc "Porter" McKnight, and drummer Kyle Rosa.

Alex Varkatzas is an American musician, best known as the former lead vocalist of metalcore band Atreyu from its inception in 1998 until 2020. In 2011, during the band's hiatus, Varkatzas also started a hardcore project with Bleeding Through vocalist Brandan Schieppati named I Am War.
Visions is the debut release of American metalcore band Atreyu. It is a seven-track EP and was released during 1999 although the exact release date is unknown, as no confirmation on the EP's release date has been made. It is suspected that the EP was sold at the band's local shows and, as a result, is currently very difficult to find. It was released through Die Trying Records, a Yorba Linda, California independent label. As heard on this EP, much of their earlier sound is influenced by hardcore punk music. Unlike every other Atreyu album, Brandon Saller does not sing on the album in addition to playing drums.
Suicide Notes and Butterfly Kisses is the debut studio album by American metalcore band Atreyu, released on June 4, 2002, under Victory Records. The album featured re-worked versions of the songs "Living Each Day Like You're Already Dead," "Someone's Standing on My Chest" and "Tulips are Better", which originally appeared on the band's 2001 EP, Fractures in the Facade of Your Porcelain Beauty. "Ain't Love Grand" and "Lip Gloss and Black" were released as singles and music videos were also made for these two songs. The latter video found significant airplay on Headbangers Ball and Uranium in fall 2003.

The lyrics deal with the former alcohol addiction of vocalist Alex Varkatzas. This song is included on the video game Madden NFL 07. It is also a master recording playable on Guitar Hero II as an Xbox 360 downloadable track. A part of the song was played on an episode of Parental Control.

Melodic metalcore is a fusion genre, incorporating elements of melodic death metal and metalcore; it has a heavy emphasis on melodic instrumentation, distorted guitar tones, palm muting, double bass drumming, blast beats, metalcore-stylized breakdowns, aggressive screaming, death growls, and clean singing. The genre has seen commercial success for employing a more accessible sound at times compared to other forms of extreme music. Many notable melodic metalcore bands have been influenced by At the Gates and In Flames.

Brandon Kyle Saller is an American drummer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. He is the drummer and vocalist of the metalcore band Atreyu. He is responsible for the melodic singing found in the band's music. He is the band's primary songwriter, along with guitarist Dan Jacobs. Following Atreyu's hiatus in 2011, Saller focused on his side project Hell or Highwater, where he is the lead vocalist. In 2011, the group released their debut album, Begin Again, in 2011. The band released an EP, The Other Side, in August 2013. Saller returned to Atreyu in 2014 and has remained a full-time member of the group since.
Covers of the Damned is an EP of covered songs, recorded by Atreyu for the band's Congregation of the Damned Tour, in support of their fifth album, Congregation of the Damned. The performers were a collaboration of Atreyu, along with their tourmates Blessthefall, Chiodos, Endless Hallway and Architects. Two songs were performed by Atreyu alone, one by Endless Hallway featuring Travis Miguel of Atreyu, and the last two are a collaboration of certain members from each band.
Lip Gloss and Black is the second single from American metalcore band Atreyu's debut album, Suicide Notes and Butterfly Kisses released in 2002. The song features the lyrics "Live, Love, Burn, Die" which has become one of Atreyu's signature phrases and one of Alex Varkatzas's most noted lyrics. The song itself was one of the first Atreyu songs to gain them mainstream attention, with the video being played extensively on MTV2 and Uranium.
Long Live is the sixth studio album by American metalcore band Atreyu. The album was released on September 18, 2015 through Spinefarm Records. It is Atreyu's first album since Congregation of the Damned in 2009. Long Live peaked at No. 26 on the Billboard 200, making it Atreyu's first album since The Curse to miss the top 20 of the chart.
In Our Wake is the seventh studio album by American metalcore band Atreyu. It was released on October 12, 2018 through Spinefarm. It is the final album to feature vocalist and founding member Alex Varkatzas before his departure from the band in September 2020.
