Francis Spaight

Francis Spaight was a transport ship in the 19th century, owned by and named after a merchant based in Limerick, Ireland. [1] The ship was engaged in trade with North America, such as transporting Irish emigrants to North America and transporting timber on the return trip. Francis Spaight became infamous for an incident of cannibalism.

Wreck and cannibalism incident 1835

On 3 December 1835, the ship broached to off the coast of Canada in a snow storm, washing away all the provisions and fouling the water stores. Of the 18 crewmen, three were thrown overboard during the accident and 15 survived, including four young crewmen in their teens. [3]

With only rain water and bottles of wine, the crewmen endured severe cold, dehydration and hunger until 18 December, when the captain suggested they sacrifice one of the four young crewmen to survive. [4] [5] The captain justified exclusion of other older crewmen by the fact that they had families depending on them. The four boys cast lots and Patrick O'Brien, a fifteen-year-old cabin boy, drew the death lot. Captain ordered the cook to kill O'Brien; the cook initially refused but was later forced to do so by the captain. [1] However, the cook failed in killing O'Brien. O'Brien attempted to kill himself by cutting his own wrist, but his attempt also failed. In the end, the captain resorted to cutting O'Brien's throat, at which point O'Brien resisted but was killed. The surviving crewmen cannibalised O'Brien for three days until the 20th, when an adult crewman, Michael Behane, and another cabin boy, George Burns, became deranged from dehydration and hunger. [6] They were also cannibalised, in addition to another crewman who died on the same day.

When the surviving crewmen were about to draw another lot for cannibalism, they were spotted by the Newfoundland vessel Angerona. [7] The crewmen were waving hands and feet of cannibalised victims to express their plight. After being stranded for twenty days, 11 crewmen survived out of 18. Three died due to the snow storm, and four had been cannibalised. Aboard the Angerona, the survivors were so emaciated and malnourished that they couldn't feed themselves without help.

Recovery and Refit

Francis Spaight was initially abandoned, but subsequently recovered and towed to England, where it was refitted during 1837, and reregistered on 7 January 1838. Then resold, and remeasured later in the year with new owners, and registered again 8 August 1838. [8] The incident and ship were among shipwrecks enquired about before a Parliamentary Select Committee in 1836 and 1839. [8] [9]

Francis Spaight set sail for Sydney on 15 August 1838, under the command of Captain Sayers, arriving in Sydney on 31 December 1838. That voyage was recorded in the personal diary of one of the passengers, John Hume, who was emigrating from Scotland to Australia. [10]

She was used for the kauri trade in New Zealand during 1839–1840. Under Captain N. Sayers, she entered Hokianga Harbour from Sydney via the Bay of Islands prior to 28 November 1839 and departed for England about 10 January 1840. [11]

Subsequent wreck and destruction

Francis Spaight broke from her anchor during a gale, and driven ashore, in Table Bay, near the Cape Of Good Hope, on 7 January 1846. A whaler with six crew members rowed to the rescue of the Francis Spaight's crew of fifteen. The ship's carpenter declined to board the whaler, but ultimately survived. However, the whaler subsequently capsized, and of the 20 people it had on board, all but one drowned. [12]

A custom of the sea is a custom said to be practiced by the officers and crew of ships and boats in the open sea, as distinguished from maritime law, which is a distinct and coherent body of law governing maritime questions and offenses.

Polly was an American brig that was swamped during a gale in late 1811 and spent the following six months adrift in the Atlantic Ocean. Edgar Allan Poe mentioned the saga of Polly in his 1838 novel The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket.

William Brown was an American ship that sank in 1841, taking with her 31 passengers. The survivors took to two boats, which later separated to increase their chances of being found. Nine crewmen and 32 passengers occupied the overloaded longboat. At the instigation of the first mate, who was placed in charge by the captain, some of the crew, Alexander Holmes among them, forced 12 of the adult male passengers out of the boat. In the case of United States v. Holmes, Holmes – the only crewman who could be found – was charged with murder and convicted of manslaughter for his actions.

The Derry Castle was a 1,367 ton iron barque built at Glasgow in 1883, and initially operating out of Limerick, Ireland. She had been registered there on 19 November 1883 by Francis Spaight & Sons. In 1887 while voyaging from Australia to the United Kingdom with a cargo of wheat, she foundered off Enderby Island, in the subantarctic Auckland Islands, on a reef which now bears her name.

The barque Maria was launched at Yarmouth in 1836. Maria was originally used on the England to Bombay run in the 1830s. She sank with the loss of 28 lives on 23 July 1851 near Cape Terawhiti on the North Island of New Zealand. Only two crew members survived.

George Pollard Jr. was the captain of the whalers Essex and Two Brothers, both of which sank. Pollard's life, including his encounter with the sperm whale that sank Essex, served as inspiration for Captain Ahab, the whale-obsessed character in Herman Melville's Moby-Dick.

Beulah is a heritage-listed farm at 767 Appin Road, Gilead, New South Wales, an outer suburb of Sydney, Australia in the Macarthur region. It was built from 1835 to 1846 by Cornelius O'Brien, Duncan Cameron, John Kennedy Hume, Ellen Hume; Mansfield Brothers. It is also known as Summer Hill; Summer Hill Estate. The property is privately owned. It was added to the New South Wales State Heritage Register on 2 April 1999.

Bombay was launched in 1801 at Daman/Demaun. Her early career is obscure. From 1821 on she assumed Calcutta registry. Between 1832 and 1840 she made three voyages from London as a whaler. In 1842 she carried settlers for the New Zealand Company. She was last listed in 1853.

The Exmouth was a brig built in 1818. She was classed as a snow in Lloyd's Register of 1845. She worked as a whaler in the British northern whale fishery prior to her life as an emigrant ship sailing between Londonderry and Quebec. She was wrecked against the south side of the Isle of Islay in 1847 during a storm. Two hundred and forty-one people lost their lives; three crewmen survived.

The Gratitude was a 19th-century Sandy Hook pilot boat built in 1824 by Brown & Bell for New York pilots. She helped transport maritime pilots between inbound or outbound ships coming into the New York Harbor. In 1839, she had a narrow escape from the slave ship La Amistad. In 1839, the Gratitude No. 3, was shipwrecked when a hurricane swept the New York coast. The New Jersey Pilot Boat John McKeon was lost in the same storm.

The John McKeon was a 19th-century New Jersey pilot boat built in 1838 by Webb & Allen for the New Jersey Pilots Association. She helped transport maritime pilots between inbound or outbound ships coming into the New York Harbor. Her short career ended in 1839, when the John McKeon was shipwrecked in a hurricane that swept the New York coast. The pilot boat Gratitude was lost in the same storm.
