Franco Lalli (born March 11, 1985) [1] is a Canadian former soccer player who most recently played as a midfielder for North York Astros in the Canadian Soccer League.

Club career

Lalli began playing soccer at the youth level with the Woodbridge Strikers, Woodbridge Town Football Club, Brampton Lions, [2] Ontario Provincial team and the University of Notre Dame before playing abroad in Italy, where he had stints with U.S.D. Lucera Calcio, Foggia Calcio, S.S. Cavese 1919, US Avellino [3] and Foggia Calcio. In 2005, he signed with Lombard-Pápa TFC in the Hungarian National Championship II, before being released in 2006. On April 17, 2008 the North York Astros announced the signing of Lalli for the 2008 season. [4] He recorded his first Astros goal on August 9 against the Brampton Lions. [5] Throughout the season Lalli helped the Astros set an all time record for most points and wins in a season, and helped the team qualify for the playoffs. In the quarterfinal match of the playoffs Lalli scored the Astros only goal to bring the match to extra time, but the Serbian White Eagles would score the winning goal to advance to the semifinals. [6]

International career

Lalli appeared for Canada in the 2005 FIFA World Youth Championship, although he did not play in the tournament. [7] In total he recorded four appearances with the Canadian national U-20 team. [8]

Style of play

A versatile player, Lalli is known for being an all-rounder, and can play as a forward or as an offensive midfielder on both the left or as right flanks. [9]

Personal life

Lalli lives in Toronto and is fan of Roberto Baggio. [10]

The 2006 Canadian Soccer League season was the 9th season for the Canadian Soccer League. The season began on May 19, 2006, and concluded on October 15, 2006, with Italia Shooters defeating Serbian White Eagles, 1–0, at Esther Shiner Stadium to win their first CSL Championship. In the regular season Serbia clinched the International Division, and Oakville Blue Devils secured their first National Division title. The league was re-branded as the Canadian Soccer League, and renamed their two existing conferences into the International and National division. The changes brought about an increase in sponsorship, media coverage, and a 50% increase in attendance. The CSL also received greater autonomy from the Ontario Soccer Association. The league struck an agreement with the Toronto Community News which provided coverage for the league and its member clubs through their nine community newspapers.

The 2007 Canadian Soccer League season was the tenth since its establishment. The first match of the season was played on May 11, 2007, and ended on October 28, 2007. The season concluded with Toronto Croatia claiming their third championship by defeating rivals Serbian White Eagles 4-1 on aggregate making Croatia one of the most successful clubs in the history of the CSL & Canadian soccer. Toronto Croatia also celebrated its 50-year anniversary in Canadian soccer by winning the CSL title after losing just one game in the 5-month long campaign, including an unbeaten streak in their international triumph of the Croatian World Club Championship. During the regular season the Serbian White Eagles secured their second consecutive International Division title, while St. Catharines Wolves won their first National Division title.

The 2008 Canadian Soccer League season was the 11th since its establishment where a total of 16 teams from Ontario and Quebec took part in the league. The season began on May 16, 2008, and ended on October 26 with the Serbian White Eagles claiming their first championship by defeating Trois-Rivières Attak 2-1 in a penalty shootout. This was the third consecutive year the White Eagles had reached the CSL finals losing respectively to Italia Shooters in 2006, and to rivals Toronto Croatia in 2007. While during the regular season Italia won their second division title with Trois-Rivières becoming the first Quebec team to claim the National Division title.

The Attak denied Serbia their championship title by defeating them 3-2 in a penalty shootout. The victory marked the organizations first championship title, and the return of the championship to Quebec since the 1978 season when Montreal Castors competed in the National Soccer League. Throughout the regular season both Serbia, and Trois-Rivieres won their respective divisions.

The 2014 season was York Region Shooters's 17th season in the Canadian Soccer League. It began on May 25, 2014 and concluded on October 26 2014. The club ended the Canadian Soccer League campaign as champions without a single defeat – a record of 13 wins and 5 draws. Their perfect season also included the First Division title with York Region finishing eleven points ahead of Toronto Croatia. In the preliminary round of the postseason the club defeated Brampton City United. In the second round they defeated Astros Vasas FC, and Toronto Croatia in the CSL Championship final. For the second consecutive season striker Richard West finished as the club's top goalscorer with nine goals.
