Franklin Pierce "Frank" Huddle Jr. (born May 9,1943) is an American diplomat. Huddle has the nickname "Pancho." [1]
A native of California, [2] [3] Huddle received a Bachelor of Arts in linguistics from Brown University in 1965. Huddle received two degrees from Harvard University,a Master of Arts in Middle Eastern history and languages in 1970 and a Doctor of Philosophy in 1978. [4]
From September 1990 to September 1994,Huddle served in Myanmar as the Chargéd'affaires ad interim. [4] [5]
While serving as the Consul General of the United States,Mumbai,Huddle and his wife,Chanya,nicknamed "Pom",survived the crash of Ethiopian Airlines Flight 961,which was hijacked on November 23,1996. [6] [7] Huddle said that he chose to fly on Ethiopian Airlines while planning a safari trip to Kenya due to its outstanding reputation and having Federal Aviation Administration certification,adding that a daytime flight was "safer". In another interview for the Mayday television series,he said when the captain announced to the cabin that it was time for passengers to don life jackets,he heard the sounds of inflation after he and his wife put theirs on;he then stood up and told the passengers in all three cabins not to inflate their jackets inside the plane. [8] Huddle credits his and his wife's survival to a last-minute upgrade to business class. [1]
Huddle served as United States ambassador to Tajikistan. [3] [4] [9] He received an appointment on October 1,2001 and presented his credentials on October 26,2001. He left the Tajikistan post on October 9,2003. [10]

American Airlines Flight 77 was a scheduled domestic transcontinental passenger flight from Dulles International Airport in Northern Virginia to Los Angeles International Airport in Los Angeles. The Boeing 757-223 aircraft serving the flight was hijacked by five al-Qaeda terrorists on the morning of September 11,2001,as part of the September 11 attacks. The hijacked airliner was deliberately crashed into the Pentagon in Arlington County,Virginia,killing all 64 aboard and another 125 in the building.

The hijackers planned to crash the plane into a federal government building in the national capital of Washington,D.C. The mission became a partial failure when the passengers fought back,forcing the terrorists to crash the plane in Somerset County,Pennsylvania,preventing them from reaching al-Qaeda's intended target,but killing everyone aboard the flight. The airliner involved,a Boeing 757-222 with 44 passengers and crew,was flying United Airlines' daily scheduled morning flight from Newark International Airport in New Jersey to San Francisco International Airport in California,making it the only plane hijacked that day not to be a Los Angeles–bound flight.

Air France Flight 8969 was an Air France flight that was hijacked on 24 December 1994 by the Armed Islamic Group of Algeria (GIA) at Houari Boumediene Airport,Algiers. The terrorists murdered three passengers and their intention was either to detonate the aircraft over the Eiffel Tower or the Tour Montparnasse in Paris. When the aircraft reached Marseille,the National Gendarmerie Intervention Group (GIGN),a counter-terror unit of the French National Gendarmerie,stormed the plane and killed all four hijackers.

Ethiopian Airlines Flight 961 was a scheduled flight serving the route Addis Ababa–Nairobi–Brazzaville–Lagos–Abidjan. On 23 November 1996,the aircraft serving the flight,a Boeing 767-200ER,was hijacked en route from Addis Ababa to Nairobi by three Ethiopians seeking asylum in Australia. The plane crash-landed in the Indian Ocean near Grande Comore,Comoros Islands,due to fuel exhaustion;125 of the 175 passengers and crew on board,including the three hijackers,died. This is the first recorded instance of a partially successful ditching utilizing a wide-body aircraft.

On December 7,1987,the British Aerospace 146-200A,registration N350PS,crashed in San Luis Obispo County near Cayucos,after being hijacked by a passenger.

TWA Flight 840 was a Trans World Airlines flight from Leonardo da Vinci International Airport in Rome,Italy,to Ben Gurion International Airport in Tel Aviv,Israel,that was hijacked on 29 August 1969.
