Fraserburgh Hospital is a community hospital in Lochpots Road, Fraserburgh, Scotland. It is managed by NHS Grampian.

History

The facility was established as an infectious diseases hospital in 1905. [1]

It joined the National Health Service in 1948. [2] The old infectious diseases hospital was demolished in order to make way for a modern facility which was also intended to replace the old Thomas Walker Hospital in Charlotte Street which had opened in 1878. [1] The new facility was designed by Moira & Moira and opened on the site by Sidney G. Davidson FRCS in September 1968. [1] The Princess Royal visited the site to celebrate the hospital's 50th anniversary on 27 September 2018. [3]

Services

The hospital is supported by GP services from Central Buchan Medical Group, Crimond Surgery, Finlayson Street Medical Practice and Saltoun Surgery. It has a 24-hour A&E department as well as a minor injuries unit. [4]

The Edinburgh City Hospital was a hospital in Colinton, Edinburgh, opened in 1903 for the treatment of infectious diseases. As the pattern of infectious disease changed, the need for in-patients facilities to treat them diminished. While still remaining the regional centre for infectious disease, in the latter half of the 20th century the hospital facilities diversified with specialist units established for respiratory disease, ear, nose and throat surgery, maxillo-facial surgery, care of the elderly and latterly HIV/AIDS. The hospital closed in 1999 and was redeveloped as residential housing, known as Greenbank Village.
