HMS Proserpine was a 32-gun Amphion-class frigate built for the Royal Navy during the Napoleonic Wars. The French Navy captured her off Toulon about a year after her commissioning and took her into service as Proserpine. She served in various capacities such as a frigate, troopship, hospital ship, and prison hulk until 1865.
Captain Charles Otter commissioned Proserpine in September 1807. He then sailed her to the Mediterranean Sea on 6 March 1808. [1]
The British sent Proserpine to sail off Toulon to observe and report on the movements of the French fleet. Captain Bernard Dubourdieu analyzed her patrol pattern, leading the French to send his frigate, Pénélope, accompanied by Pauline, to approach her in the night. They pretended to be the British relief that Otter was expecting and succeeded in engaging her at short range. In the ensuing Action of 27 February 1809, Proserpine had her rigging severely damaged; with no hope of escape or rescue, she struck her colours after a one-hour battle that claimed the life of one of her men, and wounded ten others, one mortally. [1] Pénélope towed Proserpine to Toulon.
At Toulon the French Navy repaired her and took her into French service under her existing name, commissioning her on 1 May 1809. [2] On 1 April, capitaine de frégate Ganteaume, younger brother of Admiral Ganteaume, took command of Proserpine, transferring from Mohawk. Between 28 June and August 1809 she was still under captain Ganteaume's command. [3] She served Admiral Ganteaume's Mediterranean squadron for the remainder of the Napoleonic Wars, with a refit in Genoa in 1810. Between 12 April 1811 and 11 October she was in Genoa roads, and under the command of capitaine de frégate Ganteaume, later capitaine de vaisseau. [4] He was still her captain on 1 February 1812, at Toulon. [5]
At the Bourbon Restoration in 1814, Proserpine was decommissioned and put in the reserve in Toulon. She was recommissioned in 1828, and took part in the Invasion of Algiers in 1830.
In 1840 she was re-classified as an 800-ton displacement corvette de charge. [2]
In 1842, she was transformed into a troopship, and in January 1846 as a transport. She was fitted as a hospital ship in October 1850 at Brest. [2] She served as a hospital ship in the Black Sea during the Crimean War.
The French Navy sent Proserpine to Cayenne, French Guiana, in 1856. There she was converted to a prison hulk in January 1857. [2]
She was struck from the lists on 20 July 1865, and broken up in 1865-66 in French Guiana. [2]
Médée was an Iphigénie-class 32-gun frigate of the French Navy. The British captured her in 1800 and took her into service as HMS Medee, but never commissioned her into the Royal Navy, instead using her as a prison ship.
Sensible was a 32-gun Magicienne-class frigate of the French Navy. The Royal Navy captured her in 1798 off Malta and took into service as HMS Sensible. She was lost in a grounding off Ceylon in 1802.
Manche was a 40-gun Hortense-class frigate of the French Navy, originally named Département de la Manche, but the name was immediately shortened to Manche around the time of her launch in April 1806.
Var was a corvette of the French Navy, launched in 1806 as the name-ship of her class of flutes. She served as a storeship until the British captured her in 1809. She became the transport HMS Chichester, and was wrecked in 1811.
HMS Carnation was a Royal Navy 18-gun Cruizer-class brig-sloop built by Taylor at Bideford and launched in 1807. After the French brig Palinure captured her, she was burned by the French to prevent her recapture.
Berceau was a 22-gun corvette of the French Navy, built to a design by Jacques-Noël Sané, and launched in 1794. The Americans captured her in 1800 but restored her to France the next year. She then served in the Indian Ocean before returning to Spain, where she was broken up in 1804.
Sylphe was an Abeille-class 16-gun brig-corvette of the French Navy. The class was built to a design by François Pestel. The British captured her in 1807 and took her into the Royal Navy as HMS Seagull, but apparently never used her in any capacity. She was sold in 1814.
Alceste was a Magicienne class frigate of the French Navy, launched in 1780, that the British seized at the Siege of Toulon. They transferred her to the Kingdom of Sardinia, but the French recaptured her a year later in the action of 8 June 1794. The British captured her again at the action of 18 June 1799 and took her into service as HMS Alceste. In 1801 she became a floating battery and she was sold the next year.
Nourrice was the first of two flûtes built to a design by Raymond-Antoine Haran. She was launched on 3 August 1792 at Bayonne and coppered in 1795. She served at Brest and Toulon, until a British squadron cornered her in the Bay of Sagone on Corsica's east coast in 1811 and destroyed her.
Créole was a 40-gun frigate of the French Navy, a one-off design by Jacques-Augustin Lamothe. The French Navy loaned her to a privateer in 1797. Later, she served in the Brest squadron, took part in Ganteaume's expeditions of 1801 to Egypt, and was involved in the French acquisition of Santo Domingo and briefly detained Toussaint Louverture before he was brought to France. The 74-gun ships HMS Vanguard and HMS Cumberland captured her Santo Domingo on 30 June 1803. The Royal Navy took her into service but she foundered soon afterwards during an attempt to sail to Britain; her crew were rescued.
Courageuse was a 12-pounder Concorde class frigate of the French Navy. She was launched in 1778. The British captured her in 1799 and thereafter used her as a receiving ship or prison hulk at Malta before breaking her up in 1802.
Goéland was the name ship of a two-vessel class of "brick-avisos", built to a design by Raymond-Antoine Haran and launched in 1787. She served the French Navy for several years carrying dispatches until in 1793 HMS Penelope and HMS Proserpine captured her off Jérémie. The Royal Navy took her into service briefly as Goelan and sold her in 1794. As the merchant brig Brothers she appears to have sailed as a whaling ship in the British southern whale fishery until 1808 or so, and then traded between London and the Brazils. She is no longer listed after 1815.
The French brig Colombe was launched in 1795 for the French Navy. She had a minor role in the mutiny on HMS Danae. The British captured her in 1803. She never served on active duty in the Royal Navy but instead was immediately laid-up. She was broken up in 1811.
The action of 27 February 1809 was a minor naval engagement during the French Revolutionary Wars. Two 44-gun frigates, Pénélope and Pauline, sortied from Toulon harbour to chase a British frigate, HMS Proserpine, which was conducting surveillance of French movements. First sneaking undetected and later trying to pass herself as a British frigate coming to relieve Proserpine, Pénélope approached within gun range before being identified. With the help of Pauline, she subdued Proserpine and forced her to surrender after a one-hour fight.
Mohawk was a ship launched at Beverly, Massachusetts in 1781. She became a privateer, making two voyages. In 1782 the Royal Navy captured her and briefly took her into service under her existing name before selling her in 1783. She then became a merchantman until some investors in Bristol bought her in 1796 and turned her into a privateer again. In 1799 she became a letter of marque, but the French Navy captured her in 1801. She then served in the French Navy, capturing a British privateer in 1805, and was sold in 1814.
Inconstant was a Sylphe-class brig, one of 32, launched in 1811 for the French Navy. In 1815, Napoleon used her to escape from exile on Elba. In the 1820s she took part in the war with Spain and later served on the Brazil station. She also served on the French Guiana station. She was broken up at Brest in December 1843.
Sirène was launched in 1823 as a Vestale-class frigate, which owed their design to Pail Filhon. In 1825 she was under the command of capitaine de vaisseau Marie Henri Daniel Gauthier, comte de Rigny, who commanded the French Navy's Levant Division. Sirène was Admiral Henri de Rigny's flagship at the Battle of Navarino, where he commanded the French division.
The French ship Généreux was originally the Portuguese merchantman Ouvidor Pereira. Captured by Entreprenant in 1809, the French navy took her into service as Généreux. In 1814 she was renamed Loire. She was decommissioned at Brest in July 1838 and struck from the lists in August before being broken up.
The Russian ship Moskva was a 74-gun ship of the line of the Yaroslav class launched in 1799. She served in the North Sea and the Mediterranean until 1808, was sold to France in 1809 and was renamed Duquesne in 1811.
The French brig Génie was a Sylphe-class brig launched at Dunkirk in 1808. She was retired from service in 1833.
