The band made use of sound effects and cinematic excerpts in the recording of this album, as opposed to sampling other artist's songs.
It is characterized by its harsh hardcore vocal style and brutal, but often melodic and somewhat technical, guitar work. The lyrics can be described as typically hardcore, that is to say politically and socially aware in contrast to the fantasy imagery often employed by heavy metal bands.

Throwdown is an American hardcore and heavy metal band from Orange County, California. Formed in 1997, the band has endured numerous lineup changes to the point where no original members remain. Throwdown has toured as part of Ozzfest, Sounds of the Underground, Hellfest, and Warped Tour, as well as with bands such as In Flames, Lamb of God, As I Lay Dying, Killswitch Engage, Korn and Cavalera Conspiracy. The songs "Forever" and "Burn" were staples on MTV2's Headbangers Ball and Revolver Magazine called them part of "The Future of Metal" after hearing the album Vendetta. Initially branded a hardcore punk band, albums like Venom and Tears and Deathless took a sharp turn towards metal, with critics likening the band's sound to that of Pantera and Sepultura. The band are straight edge.
Daryl Palumbo is an American musician, originally from Bellmore, New York. He is the frontman of the bands Glassjaw, Head Automatica and Color Film. As a youth he was a member of the Long Island straight edge band XbustedX. In 1993 he met guitarist Justin Beck, who would become his good friend. Together they formed Glassjaw.
Into the Valley of Death is the third studio album by American hardcore punk band Death by Stereo. It was released on April 22, 2003, as their second album on Epitaph Records. The enhanced CD version of this album has a video for "Wasted Words" included.
Unbroken is an American metalcore band from San Diego County, California. They were influential in the Southern California hardcore scene during the mid-to-late 1990s. The band chose the name Unbroken because they wanted to emphasize their dedication to the straight edge philosophy of drug abstinence. However, most of the members have since given up this belief.

The Record is the debut studio album by the American hardcore punk band Fear, released May 16, 1982, by Slash Records. It was produced by Gary Lubow. The album was reissued on CD in 1991 with the single "Fuck Christmas" as a bonus track. The band re-recorded the album in its entirety and released it under the title The Fear Record in 2012.

Ensign is an American hardcore punk band from New Jersey. They formed in 1995 and signed with Indecision Records in 1996. They signed to the larger label "next door", Dexter Holland's Nitro Records, in 1998 and finally came to rest at Blackout Records in 2003 after a brief sortie back to Indecision in 2000.
Cold War is an American band from Orange County, California, United States, who are signed to notable independent hardcore specialist label, Indecision Records. Their music is described variably as metalcore, hardcore punk and melodic death metal. They have released two albums on this label.
Direction of Things to Come was the debut full-length album from New Jersey hardcore punk band Ensign. It was released on Indecision Records in November, 1997, and it followed two 7-inch vinyl EPs. As well as being released on CD, Indecision Records continued their tradition of making limited edition vinyl production runs and this release appeared on 3403 black, 515 grey and 400 purple discs, the latter released to coincide with a European tour, with a different cover.
