Funbox was a Scottish musical theatre group and children entertainers. The group toured, performing music and comedy for children, with a focus on traditional Scottish playground songs. [1] The group disbanded in 2022, having their final show at the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall. [2]

Origins

Members Anya Scott-Rodgers, Kevin MacLeod and Gary Coupland were all previously members of The Singing Kettle, when it disbanded in 2015 after 30 years. [3] [4] The three were informed that the touring "Singing Kettle" company was not available for purchase, after the retirement of two of the group's founding members in 2012. [5] They therefore formed Funbox. One of the founder members of The Singing Kettle returned to touring in 2019 with solo performances.

Members

Gary Coupland

Gary Coupland MBE (born 26 March 1964) is the group's musician and composer. He was one of the original members of The Singing Kettle. He studied at Napier University (where he was named Alumni of the Year in 2014 [6] )and at The London College of Music. He received an MBE in 1999 for services to Children’s theatre [7] and is a patron of Down's Syndrome Scotland. [8]

Kevin Macleod

Kevin Macleod (born 9 March 1969) was originally The Singing Kettle's stage manager, before joining the group and later forming Funbox. He also plays 'Bonzo', a canine character he brought with him from The Singing Kettle.

He studied stage management at Queen Margaret College and compères at Celtic Connections and the Orkney Folk Festival. [9]

Anya Scott-Rodgers

Anya Scott-Rodgers (born 7 October 1987) fronted The Singing Kettle in 2013 after auditioning among hundreds of applicants. She is a graduate of Glasgow University, Reid Kerr College and Glasgow College of Nautical Studies. She plays guitar. [10]

Tours

The group's first appearance was at the 2015 Celtic Connections, [11] followed by their debut tour, Pirates and Princesses, in 2015. [1]

The Celtic Football Club, commonly known as Celtic, is a professional football club in Glasgow, Scotland. The team competes in the Scottish Premiership, the top division of Scottish football. The club was founded in 1887 with the purpose of alleviating poverty in the Irish–Scots population in the city's East End area. They played their first match in May 1888, a friendly match against Rangers which Celtic won 5–2. Celtic established themselves within Scottish football, winning six successive league titles during the first decade of the 20th century. The club enjoyed their greatest successes during the 1960s and 70s under Jock Stein, when they won nine consecutive league titles and the 1967 European Cup. Wet Wet Wet are a Scottish soft rock band formed in 1982. They scored a number of hits in the UK charts and around the world in the 1980s and 1990s. They are best known for their 1994 cover of The Troggs' 1960s hit "Love Is All Around", which was used on the soundtrack to the film 4 Weddings and a Funeral. The song was an international success, and spent 15 weeks atop the British charts. The band is currently composed of founding member Graeme Clark and lead vocalist Kevin Simm, who replaced founding member Marti Pellow in 2018 after he left during the previous year. Graeme Duffin has also been with the band as a touring musician since 1983. The band were named Best British Newcomer at the 1988 Brit Awards.

Paul Bernard Rodgers is an English-Canadian singer, songwriter and musician. He was the lead vocalist of numerous rock bands, including Free, Bad Company, the Firm and the Law. He has also performed as a solo artist, and collaborated with the remaining active members of Queen under the moniker Queen + Paul Rodgers, from 2004 until both parties parted ways in 2009. A poll in Rolling Stone magazine ranked him number 55 on its list of the "100 Greatest Singers of All Time". In 2011 Rodgers received the British Academy's Ivor Novello Award for Outstanding Contribution to British Music.

Karen Matheson OBE is a Scottish folk singer who frequently sings in Gaelic. She is the lead singer of the group Capercaillie and was a member of Dan Ar Braz's group L'Héritage des Celtes, with whom she often sang lead vocals, either alone or with Elaine Morgan. She and Morgan sang together on the Breton language song "Diwanit Bugale", the French entry in the Eurovision Song Contest 1996. Archie Macdonald Fisher is a Scottish folk singer and songwriter. He has released several solo albums since his first, eponymous album, in 1968. Fisher composed the song "The Final Trawl", recorded on the album Windward Away, that several other groups and singers, including The Clancy Brothers, have also recorded. Starting in the mid-1970s, he produced four folk albums with Makem and Clancy. He also performed with them and other groups as a backup singer and guitarist. <span class="mw-page-title-main">The Singing Kettle</span>

The Singing Kettle are a folk music and entertainment group from Scotland who perform traditional children's songs, along with live theatre performances. Originally from the village of Kingskettle in Fife, they were formed by established folk singers Cilla Fisher and Artie Trezise, eventually being joined by musician Gary Coupland. In 2012, founding member Fisher retired from performing with the group, and Trezise not wanting to, did the same. Three years later in 2015 the group performed their last live shows as a collective. Trezise who has since split with Fisher, returned in 2019 touring with solo shows.
